I’m looking for suggestions. I have a rack in my office with up to 4U space available. I’m looking to set up a backup and storage solution to try and break free from services such as dropbox & google drive. I’d also love to run a few other things like homeassistant and potentially even Klipper for my 3d printer. I’d also...
I don’t see it as one OR the other. Nextcloud is not a backup. I would install unRAID or OMV with SnapRAID (both are good for later adding disks of any size) and Nextcloud as a container so you can access your data everywhere AND back it up! Remember (as someone already mentioned), the 3-2-1 backup rule.
My question is fairly straightforward: I’ve got wireguard set up on my home network, and I’m really happy with it, but I also got a paid VPN service as well for privacy reasons....
If you have a router like OPNsense/PFsense (but I think that OpenWRT can do that too, I’ve never used it) you can forward all your home traffic to Mozilla VPN so that when you connect home with your home VPN you can reach your LAN services and at the same time Internet through Mozilla VPN.
But if you have a routed Android smartphone (or a PC), you should enable both VPN allowing LAN only traffic through your home VPN and all the rest (you can use this to calculate the subnets) through Mozilla VPN.
Unfortunately, most people I know use WhatsApp for personal communications, as a result, I’ve had to start using it too. However, I’m unsure which is more privacy-oriented for desktop use: WhatsApp Web in a browser or the native application.
The only way this monopoly could be killed is EU government intervention.
It’s already happeniny with the DMA (Digital Markets Act): the gatekeeper (WhatsApp, Apple with iMessage, Facebook with Messages, etc.) will have to enable interoperability with external application upon requests. So by March 2024 (not sure about the date) we should be able to chat with people that use WhatsApp, iMessage, Facebook Message and other big services (that are considered gatekeeper) through Signal/Telegram/other apps!
When will the Commission designate the first gatekeepers?
Potential gatekeepers meeting the quantitative thresholds established by the DMA had until 3 July 2023 to notify their core platform services to the Commission. The Commission will have 45 working days from the notification date to make an assessment as to whether the undertaking in question meets the thresholds and designate gatekeepers, at the latest by 6 September 2023. Following their designation, gatekeepers will have six months to comply with the requirements in the DMA, at the latest by 6 March 2024.
Every time I try to access this community, ther’s some kind of problem with the server. If you have a look at the status page, it’s almost all orange/red. The problem aren’t DDoS attack since the server is behind Cloudflare protection. Admin/mods, why don’t you move this community to a different server instance? I’m...
I actually didn’t think about it.Icm on Lemmy, but I’m not a Lemmy specialist so I didn’t know that I could go to a different instance and access this communit indirectly. Thanks
Thanks! As you, I thought that this was a community to share thought and knowledge. In fact a couple of guys here pointed out that I could solve my problem accessing this community in another instance, not in the better way, but at least that was helpful!
You’re right about my ignorance about Lemmy, I’m a user on this federated …thing and I know nothing ahout the Lemmy server. Being in a selfhosted community your answer is what I was expecting (maybe with less attack). The API are used only by the federated instance or also by the smartphone apps? For what I see, it seems to be the former, and, if it really is so, the API calls could be allowed only by those server and blocked from everyone else, Cloidflare WAF can do this. I know that the servers are a lot, but it could be possible to insert in the WAF all the IPs of the federated instances. …or not?
I am planning to eventually build my own home server, and when I do I will hook it up via ethernet. But I do want to switch away from the generic FIOS router and use my own for more control over my data and security. Any recommendations?
I second OPNsense and Fujitsu Futro S720/920 (from €20/30 on eBay) with secondary NIC (or even router on a stick with VLAN enabled switch). I’d leave WiFi to a dedicated AP.
Fujitsu Futro S720 with a 90° 4x PCI adapter and an Intel NIC. It consumes about 6W (maybe something more with the additional NIC). You can get the former for about 20/30€ on eBay and the rest for about 30/40€. If you have a VLAN enabled switch, you can even just use the onboard Ethernet port.
Is anybody aware of any self hosted alternatives to Parrot.ai or Otter.ai? I’ve tried these services and I’m finding them very useful, but the price tag is a little steep. It seems like something that the open source community could solve. Anybody know of any projects, either existing or upcoming? Thanks!
I didn’t know about those services either! What are the “montly recording hours”?
P.s. Since you weren’t rude, why didn’t the people who downvoted you just write their thinking? I’ll never understand those people!!! Aren’t we here to share?
Not sure how many people were suffering from it, but Google Photos became adamant about pushing ads. I couldn’t find a replacement in Google Store which wasn’t doing the same. Downloaded F Droid, used alternative to website to find apps, downloaded and now the problem is solved. You can use Google Files to install the F...
The contacts apps don’t sync the contact’s (at least none of the ones I’ve tried), Android does it. You could try Simple Contacts as well as Simple Gallery. More important, use AsAway (or anything similar) that blocks ad everywhere! Beside of NewPipee (very recommend!) you could try piped.video (or any of the many other piped instances). Instead of F-Droid, try Neo Store. It can use F-Droid repository. On top of that you could abandon Gmail and use something like ProtonMail (and their drive, calendar and contacts). If you do, evaluate to buy your own domain, so you own your email address and you will be able to move it wherever you want without losing it.
I think that you miss the most powerful point: Google will penalize in the searches all the websites that will not implement the new function, so every single business will implement it straight away!
Was rather shocked to find BT hubs don’t allow you to change DNS servers anymore and force you to use their own ones, so I can’t properly setup adguard....
I opted for a Fujitsu Futro S720. It has only 1 Ethernet, but you can add a second one with a PCI x4 card. Used are very cheap and consumes about 6W (if I’m not mistaken).
Reverse Proxy vs VPN: How do you access your home-server?
The more I am selfhosting the more ports I do open to my reverse proxy....

I’m looking to try something new. I’m bored with Jellyfin. Anyone have any good alternatives I can have a good play with over the weekend?

I finally downloaded F Droid and replaced all the proprietary apps which were a pain to deal with
