personamatters,
@personamatters@ohai.social avatar

@jussi_og Vähän tuosta hyvän pohdingsin liepeiltä huutelen, että vuosikymmenten viestiarkisto on tosi helppo siirtää Gmailista muulle alustalle, joko webmailiin tai omalle koneelle. Ja hakukin toimii aika hyvin, vaikkei Googlen magiaa enää käytäkään!

Ei tee autuaaksi, mutta Gmail-exit on mahdollinen!

personamatters,
@personamatters@ohai.social avatar

@antti

Just finished the Dune trilogy. I read somewhere that ”Children of Dune” is considered a slog, but I found it quite entertaining, after an arguably slow start. The books hold up surprisingly well, considering how problematic a character Herbert was!

Also interesting to note how much Hayao Miyazaki paraphrased Dune in the Nausicaä manga.

@jhilden I was chipping away at the slow start of CoD when the new movie came out. Now I’m reading other books and waiting for the 6 people ahead of me in the ebook library queue to be done with the book.

Should’ve renewed earlier! But I admit I wasn’t in a hurry because I wasn’t quite that captivated by the early chapters.

Glad to hear you liked it! 🪱🏜

Do you have experience with interactive PDFs and accessibility?

Is there something one should take into account in terms of accessibility when creating them? Are there obvious pitfalls to avoid?

Lately I've been thinking about the concept of "brown design patterns." 💩

You know how dark patterns (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dark_pattern) are carefully designed to trick or mislead users? Well, brown patterns are sort of the same but accidental:

A brown pattern misleads or obfuscates through the carelessness or ineptitude of the designer.

It's just bad design, sure, but there's often patterns to these bad designs just like there are patterns to intentionally deceptive designs.

personamatters,
@personamatters@ohai.social avatar

A recent example of a brown design pattern: the Helsinki winter maintentance survey (https://app.maptionnaire.com/q/7au7ley4nd39) that asks you to input your postal code via a horizontally scrolling radio button list of around 80 postal codes.

It’s what it is probably because the author of the questionnaire didn’t know any better or didn’t care / have time to find another solution. Or perhaps the survey tool is just bad.

In any case, these kinds of weirdly exhaustive lists are a common mistake in questionnaires!

Kid had a friend coming over and and they specifically called me after school to ask if I could come and pick them up with the cargo bike, because said friend wanted to ride in it. Was working from home so couldn’t be bothered. They are soon 10 years and still haven’t grown out of finding it fun apparently :D

personamatters,
@personamatters@ohai.social avatar

@jhilden Heck, I’m almost 40 and still think bikes are cool and riding one is the best. If I had someone to pedal me across the city I’d ask them for a ride too!

Our little agency just got awarded graphic designer of the year. This was a great honor and a pleasant surprise to us! Information design—in Finland at least—tends to be somewhat overlooked in the graphic design field.

@jhilden Congratulations! A well-deserved win!

I'm still kicking myself for not pinching your info design book from an earlier workplace when I had the chance (they had lots of copies to spare and very little use for any of them so it was morally justified, I swear). Such a useful book!

The stopper has threaded parts and the cats don't have opposable thumbs.

HOW?

Do you have experience of, or suggestions for, vertical mice – or for other types of wrist-related computer ergonomics?

As I get older, I realize a day job at the computer pairs badly with my wrist-intensive hobby of bouldering.

(Answers are welcome in Finnish too, if you prefer that!)

Went to an outdoor sports shop. They had a lot of parking space and exactly zero bike racks.

They’re also situated right next to one of the main cycling thoroughfares between East Helsinki and downtown.

A rack or two would be a small investment. For PR and brand conservation reasons if nothing else.

It'd be nice if Mastodon had an option to automatically archive/hide old posts.

For me, an important aspect of blogging is that it creates what Cory Doctorow (among others) calls a memex (https://pluralistic.net/2021/05/09/the-memex-method/) – an extension of memory.

A blog is kind of like a notebook but with better organization and a search function, and I see no reason to treat microblogging any differently.

And just like blogs (and notebooks!), you don't want ALL the old crap to follow you around. You self-curate.

personamatters,
@personamatters@ohai.social avatar

Maybe I need to embrace the ephemeral and enable automated post deletion. Nothing of great value would be lost, surely, but the me who still sometimes checks things from IRC logs dating back to the early 00s kind of resists.

Or perhaps I'll enable automated post deletion but manually export my account data every now and again.

Still, I'd prefer a fully automatic solution.

Lainausmerkit sulkevat kommentteja ennen aikojaan kautta koko jutun. Mistä ihmeestä koko ilmiö on tullut, ähkin tänne tyhjyyteen. Lienevätkö lasitalon toimittajat tänne vielä vaivautuneet.
