why is it that WiFi never works for me on planes, neither on my iPhone nor my iPad? I must have set network something or other on them … i get redirected from, e.g., connect.klm.com to this page.

works for lynn’s iPhone… ¯_(ツ)_/¯

it’s DNS, innit?

I saw 2001: A Space Odyssey the week it came out at the Cinerama (iirc) in downtown Detroit on a field trip with Mercedes Mueckenheim’s 10th grade English class at Cass Tech, then twice more that month.

Plan for the day is to attack my inbox for an hour or two, pack lightly for an overnight, drive to Detroit, check in to the Ferry St. Inn, spend the afternoon at the Art Institute, dinner at Mario’s, then the highlight, Herbie Hancock at Orchestra Hall.

lynn and i got calls from blue cross (our insurer) offering to come to our place and measure our vitals etc. and to compensate us $75 each.

i was tempted by the $150 offer, but i couldn't sweep the privacy invasion from my mind, so i declined.

Returning to the classroom twice a week after three semesters off, I am finding lecturing so taxing that I can’t really hope or expect to accomplish anything else on those two days, not even email. I just come home and crash.

When I was a kid, it seemed like society was obsessed with quicksand. I know I was — I was terrified and studied all the texts on What To Do.

I was reminded of it watching an old Italian film — Divorce, Italian Style — this evening, in which one of the characters drowns in quicksand. (In southern Sicily. Where I’m headed in a couple months. So now I’m worried.)

Seems like you never hear about quicksand anymore.

Lynn asked me where we should stay in Amsterdam in May and I started thinking about Oosterpark and the Tropenmuseum and Museumplein and the Rijksmuseum and Concertgebouw and Vondelpark and Centraal and how I haven’t been to Amsterdam in a very long time.

Seiji Ozawa has died at 88.

Twenty years ago, on a Europe opera tour with my son, we were in the Vienna Staatsoper enthusiastically applauding the curtain call of Don Giovanni when Seiji Ozawa stepped onto the stage. (I guess I should have glanced at the program.)

This is quite an interesting article about Dave Mills, who passed away last month, with a lot of details about his time at Michigan (BSE Engineering Science 1961, BSE Mathematics 1961, MSE Electrical Engineering 1962, MS Communication Sciences 1964, PhD Computer and Communications Science 1971).
