Long-time #anime fan, starting with the original US broadcasts of Astro Boy and 8th Man.
I present programs and panels at conventions like #penguicon.
I don't watch a lot of shonen anime.
I'm a big fan of #precure, an all-ages magical girl metaseries by Toei that's been running since 2004, with over 900 episodes.

I write SF & Fantasy, have a couple stories published, but my commute currently makes that more difficult.

I should've learnt SQL earlier tbh, but Computer Science program in the high school teaches to use Access...
And I feel that reading SQL code is far more easier than looking the Query Design mode, yeah, it makes me confused 🥲

pkemner,
@pkemner@urusai.social avatar

@alxdre301
The sql query design mode still seems to produce some really horrid execution plans. When I started fixing stuff my boss wrote with design mode, I sometimes got 100x improvement in execution times.

This is a useful little series for learning stuff that usually isn't taught:

In case you didn't see it earlier, I posted about the game Densha De Go!! Hashirou Yamanote Sen (Go by Train!! Drive the Yamanote Line) on my Pixelfed account. You can check out the post (and boost, if you'd like...I know I would) here: https://pixelfed.social/i/web/post/663035428811957328

I was hoping to like it, but I also kind of bought it on a lark based purely on reviews / seeing it in action at Magfest.

So glad I did.

It's so very different than any game I've played before.

Here's another screenshot.

IRL trains take a lot longer to stop than a car. Freight trains might take several miles.
They usually release sand in front of the wheels to increase friction for stopping.

If it expects you to arrive and leave on time with the precision expected it will be pretty challenging.

You got to love Fedex flat out lying about attempting a package delivery. I was outside walking the dogs I'm sitting and no truck came by. Not to mention there is no signature required.

pkemner,

@gnitro
That's happened to me several times. And a car part was stalled 10 miles away for an entire month because the driver couldn't find the house. Which is two stories tall, 40' from the road, and has a county house number at the street.

Just try and pick up a package directly from a warehouse.
I have entered a nuclear power facility for work with far less fuss.

What's worse is I'm seeing posts of "Biden is disappointing, so I'm not going to vote, and let Trump win."

If they're saying that, they should follow it up with "IDGAF if people less fortunate than me die, are beaten by the police and anti-woke groups, sent further into poverty."

Because their purity is more important.

So last year I read just over 400 light novels, manga, and other books.

Here's my year in review from Storygraph

I have set this year's goal to 300 again. We'll see if I shoot by it again or not lol.

That's impressive!
I wish I had an easy way to get a word count on light novels. Page counts are pretty meaningless, and if you're a writer everything is word count.

Hey, anyone on the fediverse with a career in have any advice/direction for someone interested in a career in that field with no degree? Important certs I should pick up? Useful places to look for entry level IT work? stuff like that

I have a job right now but it's not something I really see baring fruit long-term so I'd like to start moving in a more productive direction

pkemner,
@pkemner@urusai.social avatar

@pixel
First thing I'd think about is enterprise vs commercial software development. Most courses emphasize the latter.
Enterprise you're likely to have better work-life balance, but you may not be using the latest-greatest stuff.
Other way you're more likely to be in a team of brogrammers who are happy to work 60-70 hours a week for no extra pay.
The things to learn will be different in each.

pkemner,
@pkemner@urusai.social avatar

@pixel
You'll have less competition.
I'd try to talk to some people doing sysadmin work and find out what that's like day-to-day.
I'm mainly a sql person- writing complex queries and making them run more efficiently. Currently I'm doing stuff to feed PowerBI. A lot of tech changes going on in that, but the pace isn't too fast to keep up with.
Most off-the-wall thing would be modern COBOL- which IBM is heavily supporting, and is not just babysitting ancient code:

hey, does anyone in my corner of the fediverse do (or know anyone that does) any woodworking? I have a very simple custom request if anyone is up to the task (i want a custom keyboard wrist rest for my new keyboard c:)

pkemner,
@pkemner@urusai.social avatar

@pixel
If you can't find anybody on the fediverse, check out a local art or craft fair. There are usually several woodworkers at varied skill levels. Often they don't work for much more than material cost.
If your wrists are going to be in constant contact with the wood, you want a finish that can stand up to that.
Be very specific on what you want. If they have to guess they'll probably guess wrong.

Today is the General Election in , , and for important state and local offices. Additionally, in some very important ballot initiatives are up for a vote as brought by the people to protect the right to choose and to legalize recreational cannabis.

If you live in those states and have not yet, get out and !

Local politics matter!

Subs vs Dubs- Here we go!
This debate crops up with some regularity. First of all, it’s pointless and stupid to tell you which you should prefer. But there are some interesting things about brain science and anime history that can be added to the mix.

The entire USA has decided we're all going to break the same law a little bit. And the cops get to decide on any given day by how much we have to break the law before we actually get in trouble.

This has been a discussion of highway speed limits.

I didn't realize there were THAT many animals in . But I don't have time to skim thru all the series.

:blobfoxfloofowo:

pkemner,
@pkemner@urusai.social avatar

@anianimalsmoe
It depends on your criteria- lots of animal-themed faries like Rabarin from Healin Good, or ferret Tarte from Fresh.
There are a lot of pet or other more realistic animals too. One place to start is Inori/Cure Pine from Fresh. Her parents run a vet clinic and she helps out. Her fairy gives her the ability to talk with animals, and all that makes for a lot of animal-related story points.
That pile of pets has Inori in the heap.

pkemner,

I wondered when you'd get around to . If I think of specific episodes I'll let you know.
950+ episodes, and 30+ theatrical movies is a lot to cover! :NyanpireShock:

pkemner,
@pkemner@urusai.social avatar

@anianimalsmoe
One think to remember is that with only two exceptions there is an entirely new set of characters, themes, challenge etc. So it's runs of 45 - 50 independent episodes. The characters return to their civilian lives, though they may be recalled for an All-Stars or crossover movie. Not like One Piece or Inuyasha

Watching is fun and hilarious because it's mostly just a bunch of white people looking at things non-white people did in antiquity & as they can't figure out how they did it - they jump to the assumption of aliens.

@To@urusai.social avatar

If you track older Anime (80s/90s), do you consider them "watched" when you only saw the dubbed version with very obvious americanized humor? I'm really struggling with it. Yes, I've seen the Anime, but are the differences to the original too big to consider it the actual product?

It's always a laugh when someone judges a show based on criteria from another genre. Akebi's Sailor Uniform or Aria gets a 0 because there aren't enough fistfights.

"Puella Magi Madoka Magica is beloved (or infamous) for its unique take on the magical girl genre, depicting an exploitative system designed to turn its heroines into monsters. Since its release in 2011, fans have read this system through the lenses of gender, sexuality, ethics, and religion. Looking at this series through an economic lens reveals yet another layer of interpretation: a story about the cruelty of business models that profit off the worker’s suffering."
