So, is, for the first time, in Geneva at & Wonders. And they try what has been tried several times before, an online configurable watch model. So far, no one really succeeded at this, and I think they will fail, too. Sadly.

My personal highlight so far is the reissued Polo Date. Very nice:

@gisiger @r_df_ng agreed. I think they are well past the point where they are missing the target audience. Imo Knot in Japan has the better approach where you keep it very casual with selecting a model and quick release straps, each with their own story/sale pitch. Once you step into modders territory, it’s game over.

@JenMsft all modern OS going for the dock/pinned taskbar method has rendered the desktop icons completely useless to me. I put everything that matters there, search for the rest and never ever look at the desktop anymore.

I am generally not a fan of . It may sound funny since all high-end are luxury, but Rolex is in its own league when it comes to being overpriced. I also don’t like how the brand treats their customers with wait-list and service. And most of their models are too gaudy to my tastes. With that said, there are a few exceptions and one of them is the Speedking 6430, predecessor to old Air-king. Manual wind, no hacking, tiny (31mm), simple with cream dial

ppn,
@ppn@mastodon.online avatar

I have always worn my Speedking a bit too loose. Today I finally took some time to properly adjust the bracelet. I only really needed to remove 1 link but did 2 instead so I can play with micro-adjustment later if needed. Hopefully I never have to do it ever again. I hate having to pry open the chain on those old Oyster bracelet since there is no screw to easily remove links 😅.

A watch I don't wear that much nowadays for geopolitical reasons, but...I do like it. It's cheap and good and has a 10 year service interval due to the innards being apparently primitive as hell. Loses about a minute a day mind you. A Vostok Komandirskie.

    I know it is a bit unusual but I own a , a and a watch yet I don’t have any . I am going to fix that soon as I am missing a field watch in my collection. Hint: I went very cheap as I intend for it to be my beater 😁.

    ppn,
    @ppn@mastodon.online avatar

    It just arrived. Behold my newest watch and the only in my collection: the infamous SNK809 😊. 7S26 automatic movement with no manual rewind and no hacking (but you can kind of hack, if you know you know). One of the worst OEM straps I have ever seen. Day-date complication with a huge transition delay. Hardlex so not a sapphire crystal. But 37mm with exhibition case back and likely the cheapest automatic you can get. It gets the job done.

    @r_df_ng Most of my watches are dress/dress-sporty watches and a lot more expensive. I can’t really use an $8.5K Grand Seiko or a very dressy Poljot as beater. The only 2 watches that could work are my Citizen E650 or Casio G-Shock BA110XSM-2A. But the former is big at 42mm and quite heavy it leaves marks on my wrist due to its weight if I wear all day. And I am hesitant to mistreat the latter despite being rugged because it’s a very limited edition. Both bad at legibility too.

    ppn,
    @ppn@mastodon.online avatar

    @r_df_ng As for the SNK809, it’s dirt cheap, I really like its 37mm size and you can’t do better in terms of legibility than a black dial with white markers and zero distraction. My wrist is tiny so 37-38mm is usually the sweet spot for me.

    ppn,
    @ppn@mastodon.online avatar

    @r_df_ng and then you have Cartier which went from historically small watches to huge Santos XL that look like giant handcuffs for no apparent reason 🫠. Hopefully nobody follows their trends 🙏

    ppn,
    @ppn@mastodon.online avatar

    @r_df_ng considering their prices and how easily they scratch, you are brave if you are using them as beater 😂. It’s ironic that they are known for their rectangular/square cases yet I actually prefer their round models like Pasha or Ballon Bleu but I wouldn’t mind a Santos 100 or medium if I manage to find a deal someday.

    @ppn@mastodon.online avatar

    @itsmealexander I think the angle and the zoom are a bit misleading and make it appear bigger than it really is. This one is 38mm. 37mm is usually the sweet spot for my wrist size.
