I just bought my 2nd . Will talk about it and explain the choices I made once I actually get my hands on the box. The only thing I will tease is that this reference is very plain and simple, and probably not one I would have considered 3 months ago before I had owned the very fancy SBGA259/Golden Snowflake.

Reference is SBGP005. I was looking for a good everyday watch. I had 3 criteria:

  • can work both in casual and formal if needed, 44GS case and incredible finish are classy but sunburst dial with no extra pattern is relatively simple for a
  • blue dial, blue was the one glaringly missing color in my collection so far
  • convenience, date is a must and 9F85 quartz rated at +-10s/year means that I don’t have to babysit it, battery swap after 3 years is trivial

The SBGP005 has basically taken the place of both my SBGA259 which I find a bit too fancy for everyday and my E650 S086728 which I don’t wear often anymore because it’s too heavy, too big (42.5mm) and a bit too complicated. The SBGP005 is 40.5mm, has one date complication and is steel instead of titanium so it is definitely heavier than SBGA259 but still nowhere near as heavy as the massive Citizen.

Comparing the side view of the #GrandSeiko SBGA259 and SBGP005, unsurprisingly the case of the watch with quartz movement is much slimmer than the one with Spring Drive. But due to titanium instead of steel the bigger case is still lighter. #watches #watchesofmastodon

I came across a Datejust with tapestry dial aka “American Psycho”. I will obviously pass on it as I already own the same 16013 reference but with another dial. I found it funny though 😂

Probably the 2 watches I wear the most lately. I usually don’t swap midday like a weirdo but I exceptionally did today because having the wrong date on one of them was bothering me 😂

I am not sure why it took me so long to get a proper set of tools for instead of relying on tools for electronics that sometimes did ok sometimes not ok. I don’t plan to do anything touching the movements themselves but it’s certainly going to help for basic maintenance like a battery swap or a bracelet adjustment. I also took the opportunity to grab a 2-slots travel pouch just in case.

I bought some refill of Polywatch. Pretty great to polish and smooth out a few decades worth of scratches on plexiglass surface. It’s night and day on the crystal of the Speedking 👍

I don’t know how controversial my opinion is but I find the modern Air King extremely unappealing. It has lost a lot of the traits from the original looking more like a weird downgraded mix between an Explorer and a Milgauss. And it doesn’t even live up to its name anymore as its design is inspired by a car and has almost nothing to do with airplanes/pilots.

I got an opportunity to get a Tank for an alright price, but it is the Americaine. Not my favorite. Still thinking about it but will likely pass...

50s vin age Tissot bumper automatic . What's a bumper movement?
The bumper movement is a type of automatic movement that uses a rotating weight, or rotor, to wind the mainspring. The rotor is attached to a pivot, which allows it to swing back and forth within a limited arc

I recently went through a full power reserve run of my mechanical watches to check which one might need service. They all kept time alright but unsurprisingly the 2 older Rolex are not in good shape endurance-wise. Everything else actually exceeded specs so it’s great to know that they are fine. The Grand Seiko lasted for 75h (vs 72h on paper), surprisingly the Poljot 65h (vs 48h), the Datejust 51h (vs 42h), the Knot 45h (vs 40h).

ppn,
@ppn@mastodon.online avatar

You may have noticed that despite being a mechanical watch, I did not test my Seiko SNK809. It’s for a very simple reason: it cannot be manually wound so it’s impossible to tell when the power reserve is full.

I recently had the opportunity to check out an ultra-thin 32mm . It looks so thin (3-4mm) that I initially thought that it was a quartz but it is indeed a manual 😅

Small treat for the week-end: 6244. Mine is a bit different compared to most you might see: it is one from the series which has “brevet +” engraved between the lugs and bears a cross on the crown. In many ways it is the big brother of my Speedking as it is older (1963 vs 1970) and bigger (32mm vs 31mm).

Recent addition to my collection: Two-tone Datejust 36mm reference 16013 with jubilee bracelet. This one has 2 slightly unusual features:

  • it still has its service stickers with reference on the back
  • it has the uncommon Buckley dial and even more uncommon in cream color since most Buckley dials are usually white or blue. The irony is that it likely looks less flashy to regular people but probably stands out more in the eyes of collectors 😅
