Before about 1950 many US papers had a point of view.

Big Media, led by Henry Luce, moved toward neutral journalism, which is profitable for big media corporations.

Let’s build a better media: revive media policy.

During Trump’s administration people thought the economy was great.
Today they think the economy is bad.

Could this be related to our media?
Because if it is, it means OUR MEDIA IS BIASED TO THE RIGHT.

That can’t be correct, can it!?!!

Yes. Putting it this way is shocking:

Imagine going into a coma in 2008 after the big Obama win. Wake and learn: voting rights and Roe gone, new 2A, huge dark money rules elections, South under authoritarian rule.

And NONE of those changes were due to Congressional legislation.

It’s all fruit of the poisoned tree.

Yes.

Last month The Atlantic published a piece, "The Golden Age of American Jews Is Ending." It misdiagnosis the problem.

To push back on antisemitism in the US, we have to reject Likud and the Israeli right.

New from me:

Pundits get this wrong, and too many Democrats get this wrong too.

Schumer's speech in March was correct. He gets it. The Golden Age of American Jews depends on separating from the Israeli right.

Franklin Foer, as much as I deeply respect his other work, gets it wrong.

The ICC took one step in this direction yesterday by charging both Hamas and two leaders from the Israeli right with crimes.

Let's make it beyond the pale in all circles to criticize Americans for what the Israeli government does. American Jews are not Israel.

These chemicals are toxic and they accumulate in people. But they were profitable.

[The 3M exec] told her not to put her results into email. “Today he says he cannot remember the conversation.”

Double the budget if DOJ for white collar crime.

Only criminal charges can change the incentive structure of these executives.

One executive after another pursued profit. Heard about the data, then retired. Another berated her for harming careers.

Make execs worry about jail to stop this happening again.

Marty Peretz’s acolytes pushing to enrich wealthy people while advocating for “civic cohesion” makes me think of today’s plutocrats.

Phil Anschutz’s foundation funds those “optimism” ads, and Koch’s new org is “Stand Together.”

It’s “Civic cohesion” and hard-right policies.

The Foundation for a Better Life is all Anschutz.

He pays for “optimism” and “it will get better” ads while he funds DC Examiner which tries to make life worse for everyone but billionaires.

“Trump’s run-out-the clock legal strategy worked.”

Blame the Fed Soc and our captured courts.

Trump packed the courts with extremist political actors like Aileen Cannon and the Fed Soc SCOTUS. And they are protecting him.

Yes. Great piece on what universities need to do in the age of the Trumpified GOP.

If you're thinking about Israel/Gaza you should read David Remnick on Ha'aretz. Then subscribe to Ha'aretz.

Ha'aretz's English edition has been a must-read especially since 10/7.

https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2024/05/20/an-israeli-newspaper-presents-truths-readers-may-prefer-to-avoid

protecttruth,
@protecttruth@mastodon.online avatar

as Remnick points out, Ha'aretz is not really widely-read in Israel.

And it represents a left/liberal viewpoint that is a distinct minority in Israel.

We should still read it, keeping all that in mind.

The Atlantic and NYT over and over show us their principal audience, who they write for, who they try to please:
The upper-middle class parent.

People who are comfortable and reasonably wealthy, don’t want to worry about the country changing…

But very worried (naturally so!) about their kids rejecting them and their values.

None of this is BAD. It’s just that it skews the papers dramatically. When you realize who the Atlantic is serving, its weird crusade about campus speech makes sense.

“essentially, this [trial] is an in kind campaign donation to [Trump]”

No, John Dickerson, no no no.

Comfortable-centrist brain has SO OFTEN led the media astray.
Emily Bazelon is right. The trial hurts him. Jail would hurt him!
Why? /1

https://slate.com/transcripts/ZCtYSmRXSEVacERSanlUUGU0Q21ncjYrSTFTRFBnRlR3VE4zTlNIb0ZtZz0=

protecttruth,
@protecttruth@mastodon.online avatar

It’s very simple. Because Trump’s base likes him because he is strong.
Being forced to listen to the judge makes him look weak. Jail makes him look weak.

This peels away his support.

protecttruth,
@protecttruth@mastodon.online avatar

Dickerson goes on to say “he had a tape boasting about sexual assault and that didn’t hurt him.”
WHY?
Because that doesn’t make him look weak!

Throw him in jail for that tape, force him to accept consequences, and that would hurt him. The boasting with no consequences help.

protecttruth,
@protecttruth@mastodon.online avatar

And then David Plotz talks about how Dickerson understands the electorate.

NO. STOP listening to these passive comfortable centrists who are highly motivated to come up with reasons not to act, so their own lives don’t seem to change.

Uugghhh.

Democratic mayor says no to sending in the cops.
Republican House committee threatens to drag her in front of a committee, to push her to send in the cops.
Then Republicans brag about how they made her send in the cops.

Which party is worse here?
One is worse. Let’s be real.
