doxygen?

pry,
@pry@raru.re avatar

@lanodan ah i see. id want to have docs within the code so doxygen probably makes the most sense

what has been peoples overall feelings towards bluesky?

am reading the bluesky paper (https://arxiv.org/abs/2402.03239) rn for my dist sys reading group and its got some pretty cool ideas

pry,
@pry@raru.re avatar

@epsi yea I would agree with what youve said (tho ive never actually tried the service myself)

PDSs are able to be selfhosted easily but indexes look infeasible to actually manage in some sort of decentralized manner. I do like the idea of distributed identity (w3c's DID) BUT they seem to kinda punt this to a centralized system too: https://web.plc.directory/

they mention that itll use certificate transparency which makes that a little bit better but still...

pry,
@pry@raru.re avatar

@epsi im always interested in something that tries to improve upon or "beat" activitypub.

who knows if theyll be successful, especially with the business model, but i like that the space is active

@pry@raru.re avatar

@lain @dielan @scathach yea and those definitely just seem annoying.

blockchains are valid (but i wouldnt say preferably) solutions to some of the problems of decentralized social media: the problem of identity, and the problem of incentivizing hosting

but i think both of these have non blockchain solutions which would be preferable.

for identity (w3c DID), why not do public key private key identity? someone is identified by being able to sign things with their private key (I believe ssb did this)

incentivizing hosting is harder but perhaps you could do something like what new freenet is trying to do: penalize leechers and give priority to those who participate in the network?

pry,
@pry@raru.re avatar

@dielan @lain @lanodan @scathach thats fair... it still seems like the most compelling truly decentralized forms of identity. but yea its a hard problem and this definitely isnt going to cut it for mainstream adoption.
