Some personal news: I'm now a contributor at @wedistributemedia! I'm so excited to work with the team over there reporting everything happening in the world of distributed social media.

For my first post, I wrote about @ghost joining the Fediverse 🙏🏼

What's exciting about this is that it isn't just an ActivityPub plugin - it's a top-down re-thinking about what Ghost is as a service. This is ActivityPub for publishers done right.

Congrats to @johnonolan and team! cc Fediverse Threads

I love the trend of journalists starting up their own independent subscription newsletters / websites. I don't love that they're doing it on Substack.

quillmatiq,

I think it's unfortunate because while Substack is making their network a closed one, Ghost and Buttondown are going to enable Fediverse Threads, Mastodon, and numerous other platforms to subscribe directly to their newsletter.

Substack is fine for short-term wins but will stunt growth long-term.

I wrote about my journey that started as an experiment to see how my Threads feed would look like on Mastodon and ended with me finding experiences that went above and beyond my expectations. A post in which I try my hardest not to rant about lists.

Later this year when Fediverse Threads completely federates, the social web ecosystem is going to get a lot more exciting and I'm so ready for that future.

The thing I dislike most about the Threads algo is how it drops people from my feed for weeks on end. I'll randomly see someone I haven't in a while and get excited to welcome them back, only to realize they've been active this whole time.

This doesn't happen when I catch up on Threads using Phanpy, my Mastodon client, but not everyone has their Fedi switch on so I come here to catch up on those posts. Sad to see I'm still losing out.

Anyway, I hope more people turn on Fediverse Threads 🫶🏼

quillmatiq,

s/o to folks like @timothyjchambers who actively ask people to turn Fediverse Threads on whenever they get a chance!

"The project, dubbed SkyBridge, was among the recipients of a small distribution of $4,800 in grant funding from Bluesky, distributed across projects." - @sarahprz for @techcrunch

The launch of this would mean that Fediverse Threads users could follow Bluesky profiles and vice versa. At that point, it wouldn't matter which open protocol your platform prefers using because they'll all be part of the social web 🌐

I was one of the lucky folks that @Flipboard federated today!

Very excited to setup magazines so people in Fediverse Threads, Mastodon, and other federated networks can follow me for specific interests if they don't want all of me on main 🌐

You can follow me at the address in the image and I'll be setting up magazines for my various interests as I find content to share in them 🙏🏻

I wrote about how E2EE DMs are becoming a very real possibility for the social web. This would mean that Fediverse Threads users could potentially open DMs to their Mastodon, @Flipboard, and other social web mutuals without needing a separate account.

Very excited to see where @evanprodromou and @tomcoates take this research. More in the link below 👇🏼

"I don't know if the Fediverse is going to take off, even if I'm being optimistic and all signs are pointing toward that being true. What I do know is that a protocol-based solution is likely the right one if we want the next generation of social web products to be owned by us, the humans. To me - that's worth rooting for."

@ghost updates us on when to expect full ActivityPub integration: "more than a month, but less than a year, probably".

I'm not going to hold them to that since this needs to be done right and they should take their time, but it tells us that this is a top priority in their minds and is coming way sooner than I initially thought it would.

Following augment.ink from Fediverse Threads may be a thing by 2025!

Altman statement on ScarJo situation pretty hard to square with his “her” tweet https://www.theverge.com/2024/5/20/24161253/scarlett-johansson-openai-altman-legal-action

quillmatiq,

OpenAI said something similar in their blog post today too. Crazy they didn't just admit why they're taking it down instead of immediately going into defense mode.

Bluesky just shipped DMs! These DMs are running off-protocol (not on AT), do not support group chats, and are not E2EE but all of them are on the roadmap.

That was really fast considering they just announced it a few weeks ago 🤯

I wrote about how Patreon needs to join the social web before Fediverse Threads takes its place:

"Why would a creator send their audience to a third-party platform when Instagram and Threads can be a one-stop-shop with their existing followers while having access to new paid subscribers across the social web?

Patreon can no longer just be the place where creators are paid, it needs to be a place where creators can be discovered. And it cannot do that as a social silo."

Bluesky is planning on building DMs off-protocol, which means that you have to use the official app to use them.

@evanprodromou and @tomcoates are working on E2EE DMs built right into the ActivityPub protocol. In other words, a Mastodon user using any client could potentially start DMs with Fediverse Threads users or any other social web service.

In other words: better.

I wrote more about the work going into E2EE DMs for ActivityPub here: https://www.threads.net/@quillmatiq/post/C6euytvSuhT

In this issue of "Human-Generated Content" I wrote about how some publishers are turning to AI while others are turning to the Fediverse:

  • @ben.werdmuller talks about the media apocalypse
  • @vanessa_lea_otero and Bryan Walsh talk AI news summaries
  • @verge and @404mediaco double down on the social web
  • @crumbler endorses the Fediverse on @pjvogt's "Search Engine" podcast

Oh, and I try using ChatGPT for news. Spoiler: it's bad.

Every online community works differently. If this one isn't working for you then you don't be a part of it. Stop telling people who are having enriching experiences that they're enjoying themselves incorrectly, it's weird and obnoxious.

People on Threads aren't "annoying", you just don't fit in. And that's fine because a lot of people here didn't fit into the toxic platform you came from. We aren't replicating here, we're restarting.

Hope you find a community you feel you belong in 🫶🏼

I wrote a follow-up post about @ghost's entry into the Fediverse on augment!

I believe Ghost's Fediverse integration will have larger implications for the newsletter landscape, eventually bringing the slow death of another social silo: @substack.

The network effects of the Fediverse are in play and will skyrocket Ghost's discoverability past Substack. It's time to make the switch just like Fediverse Threads is.

@mmasnick sees Fediverse Threads, Mastodon, Bluesky, and the rest of the open social web as an antidote to the AI-generated decline of the internet:

"decentralized social media could offer an alternative to the world in which all the information we consume is intermediated by a single centralized player, whether it’s a search engine like Google, or a social media service like Meta [...] one in which you get to build the experience you want, rather than the one a giant company wants."

The For You Feed is a very efficient way to make sure you don't leave the app but an inefficient way to consume a never-ending firehose of content.

The catch-up feature on Phanpy (by @cheeaun) is one of many alternatives that give you more control over your media intake. It's how I scroll through my Mastodon and Fediverse Threads feeds on daily basis.

Social media doesn't have to be a doomscroll of random events. It can be better.

"The Verge and 404 Media are building out new functions that would allow them to distribute posts on their sites and on federated platforms – like Threads, Mastodon and Bluesky – at the same time. Replies to those posts on those platforms become comments on their sites."

If you're not looking at @verge and @404mediaco as social web platforms that are hosting hand-picked content creators with a publisher's infrastructure, you're not paying attention.
