here's where we're at: they want new nuclear power plants for computers to do what the human mind can do on a pack of stale crackers

honestly, in my secret naughty heart I can't wait for my windows box to hallucinate on my own blend of games, anime, code, and other uh... content

the code isn't shitty because people don't care about quality. the code is shitty because most of the authors are just trying to put food on the table and see a movie once in a while. investment is required to get more than best effort output in a work-or-die society. and yet, companies regularly sacrifice that growth for short term margins. it shouldn't be sustainable but money was too cheap for too long. as the interest rate winter rages on, more than fiscal debts will come due

all these years using tcp and taking it for granted and now that I've implemented about 40% of the specs, I understand why everyone in networking is frothing mad

family member needs a phone upgrade. the pixel 8a preorder is $499 while a pixel 8 is $450 through Fi so I guess a flagship phone it is

person: Amy how are you so confident?
me: I'm not really, but I have to pretend to be more confident than the guys with no reasoning to their confidence whatsoever

I guess these days it's just tensor chips that also do graphics, huh? or is that what they want us to believe?

how adhd am i? very. very highly extremely levels of adhd

You want me to design extremely resilient distributed systems and teach people how to do that, design architecture, and level up an organization? Sure, no problem

Make one single solitary tiny lil phone call or fill out even the barest hint of paperwork? Absolutely not, it is so hard

@hazelweakly I can't be the executive function gf but I can go halfsies on an executive assistant 😉

was going to put in a 3 way smart dimmer in the kitchen. in some previous renovation a light switch was relocated and in doing so all the wires are black. they ran them through a hole in a metal cover plate that seems... ill advised. I stopped the project until I can rewire it properly and tap into ground and neutral for the new switch and at least label everything 🤦‍♀️

my first goal in prototyping is usually to reveal the shape of the system before I get too deep into the components. this demands maniacally simple and replaceable components until everything works, but they don't have to be uniformly simple. sometimes when you're lucky, there's a deep vein of value that needs more complexity development and that's cool but only build out enough to understand and move on, reveal the system as it is, rather than some weird box diagrams that imply clear boundaries

a thing otel-cli can do that Big SDK won't let you do is entirely fabricated traces, so you can do things like 'draw' arbitrary waterfall diagrams by generating spans in a shell script. what They don't want you to know is that it probably is possible to run Doom on Honeycomb 🤔

hazelweakly, to random
@hazelweakly@hachyderm.io avatar

If there's one thing I wish I burn entirely to the ground and wipe away all traces and remnants of, its the misplaced notion that the productivity of Knowledge Work can be managed, measured, analyzed, and optimized as if all one needed to do was drip feed heroin up the arse of their hapless workers.

I released otel-cli 0.4.5 to integrate dependency updates & fix a fun bug. In some past refactor I broke the span attributes coming from otel-cli exec. all the code was there but the bit where attrs were set on config was too late to get copied into the span. Instead of the simple fix I also added tests & aligned with names and types in the otel semantic conventions. along the way I added pid and username attrs

is there already a law about how hypercomplex systems of systems inevitably develop complex emergent behavior, side effects, seasons, and uh tbh... moods & vibes? if not dibs on Tobey's Law

2 more stars on otel-cli's GitHub and I can brag to my vp again! did I mention I added a way to put traceparent in the args of a child process? otel-cli exec curl -H "traceparent: {{traceparent}}" github.com

y'all ever think about how stainless steel is everywhere these days so some generations after this madness we call civilization passes it will be revered as a magick Stainless Ore of the Ancients and medical waste sites will be national treasures? just me?

quick q: do you sometimes say to someone "I've been there, it gets better" but then IMMEDIATELY feel the urge to say "I'm sure I'm years behind you on other things!" b/c the other remark made you sound superior / sounded like you were judging them?

renice,
@renice@hachyderm.io avatar

@fasterthanlime I gave up on agonizing over it. I'm committed to kindness, am successful, and like helping people, so I say what's on my mind and don't sweat it (as much). sometimes I'll sound arrogant. oh well. I am pretty good at a lot of things so I deserve some of it, and offer a lot to people around me

honestly it's surprising how long centralized oss has lasted. fragmentation was always inevitable as more and more companies and developers take part. forks are natural and healthy and perhaps this natural selection process of companies closing up code will inspire new experiments in sustainable oss models

@norootcause I think I'm with @Di4na. The crime scene is in the IDE, web browser, source code, jiras, and design docs. It's not easy to experience but the experience is there.

(I'm amused that the first definition on jisho is crime scene, I love it: https://jisho.org/search/genba)
