Bought my first pair of pants from Screwfix. That’s it. I’m now old.

And I love it.

Been thinking about FT8, SSB and CW recently- with my compromise low power station, I can make many contacts with FT8, but I find it much harder with CW or SSB. I started thinking of these as “pre-information theory” modes, now I don’t feel so guilty that I’m augmenting my station with channel-noise-surmounting enhancements.

@M0CUV BS (Before Shannon) and AC (After Claude) modes.

Replaced all the missing case screws and buffed out all the scuffs on the case. Just the CRT recap to do and the IFR 2968 will be good as new.

@philpem I’ve always been interested in it since playing with it at uni. I’ve a bit of a TETRA collection these days. Been doing some SDR stuff with it too (but haven’t had a lot of time lately)

tryst, to random

My attempt at obtaining a GP appointment this morning. I was not successful. Only one call attempt connected, just to play a recorded message telling me that the queue was full and that I should call back later.

FYI, this is the only way to get a GP appointment in my local area: repeatedly try calling at 08:00 and hope you get through. If you're not successful, try again tomorrow. Repeat until the problem becomes life-threatening, then go to the ER.

ret,
@ret@furry.engineer avatar

@tryst my GP has an online ticket service called AskMyGP but you can only submit tickets when the phones are open, and it closes when they are “full” too. So usually I have the phone in one hand and laptop in the other mashing F5. Very odd way of doing things.

I love how my timeline on fedi can be like incredibly insightful technical post followed by totally lewd pup play content followed by something hilarious…

Why did we need an algorithm again?

always kinda weird to me that it almost always ends up being cheaper to buy a DC-DC buck module (e.g. CUI PXO7805-500-M-TR) from a western distributor like Mouser than it is to build a similar DC-DC converter into an assembled design with JLCPCB. you'd think it'd work out cheaper the other way just due to the parts being sourced directly in Shenzhen, but I guess the economies of scale are enough to offset the distributor markup.

ret,
@ret@furry.engineer avatar

@gsuberland also less likely that I will muck the design up with one of these too.

wait a fucking second: This smartphone has a FLIR camera built in, and also the GPS has broken so that it doesn't work while you're in motion. This isn't a hardware failure, this is a software bug they delivered in an update.

I thought this was just incompetence but I just had the horrific thought that this might have been on purpose, and related to the fact it has FLIR

ret,
@ret@furry.engineer avatar

@foone a bunch of customers at work have these and I fucking hate them. They are the most problematic Android phones I’ve had to deal with and that’s saying something.

Why I do these things to myself?
Complete rewrite of existing “settings management” in my ESP library, just because it is a tad too messy now. But all done with backwards compatibility so I don’t have to change every app that uses it all at once…
That said, these are generally quite fun projects.

ret,
@ret@furry.engineer avatar

@revk are you using NVS for settings? I wrote a bit of a wrapper around that myself.

ret,

@philpem it's odd, it's a constant two-tone thing, but Hot Mic also activates while that's happening. Not sure how the person on the other end is supposed to hear anything but the alarm though!

Odd to see a newspaper company CEO saying the quiet part out loud.

> Asked about the strategy of flooding its websites with stories, Mullen indicated that reader engagement and the quality of articles did not drive revenues as much as volume of content.
>
> “We are in the real world,” he said. “I need to get the page views, that is the way we sell advertising blocks, and advertising blocks deliver revenue. [...] We don’t talk about engagement and quality"

@philpem “news” websites full stop are some of the most awful ad-ridden stuffer-article filled hellholes on the web. Local news especially.

ret,

@patterfloof @philpem and sometimes you can even search articles cross-site I’ve noticed. Makes me think a lot are even running on the same host/DB.

@renbymon @philpem @patterfloof I really miss proper local radio. It was great. All the imperfections and local mannerisms made it. I hate the polished sheen and national ads now.

A little bit astonished at that one queer-themed instance that chose an .af (Afghanistan CCTLD) domain. I mean, we all know what you post on fedi is public, but to try the fucking taliban?! :breadthink:

ret,
@ret@furry.engineer avatar

@jaseg I think some people forget that there are actual countries behind some of the popular "vanity" TLDs. .co = Colombia, .io = British Indian Ocean Territories for example.
