IF YOU ARE HIDING A CELL PHONE OR OTHER CELLULAR DEVICE

TODAY, WED OCT 4 (2023) IT'S GOING TO SOUND AN ALARM STARTING at 2:20pm EDT (11:20am PDT), maybe coming as late as a half an hour after that.

IT WILL MAKE A LOUD NOISE THAT WILL REVEAL ITS EXISTENCE TO ANYONE IN EARSHOT. EVEN IF IT'S IN AIRPLANE MODE. EVEN IF IT'S SET TO SILENT.

@siderea My understanding of how this was done in the UK was that it used LTE Cell Broadcast. 2G and 3G-only devices didn't receive it. There was/is no "message queueing" to speak of.

HOWEVER - it was anything but a synchronous event. Some networks/areas aired the cell broadcast much later than others, indeed myself and my partner received ours a good 45 minutes after the scheduled time. Some people reported an hour or more delay. I'd say wait many hours after the scheduled time before turning back on to be safe.

@cazabon @Lockdownyourlife On iOS you can disable all emergency alerts. Settings → Notifications → Scroll all the way to the very bottom → Emergency & Severe alerts off.

I'd still a) Turn the phone off to be doubly sure, and b) Keep the phone off for at least a few hours after the and before the scheduled time. Our test in the UK was... very unsynchronised across networks & areas.

Dunno how I feel about the whole "discord is going to start using signed links to stop you hotlinking stuff" scare.

Firstly, why shouldn't they? End of the day, their CDN is there to support media posted in Discord channels, not to act as general purpose arbitrary object storage & distribution. Why anyone had any expectation to the contrary, I don't know...

Also that word has been kinda forgotten by the current generation of Internet users - hotlinking. Back in the day, you'd get a snarky alternative message served up if you sent a request for an image hosted on a forum without Referrer: set to an acceptable value. "Don't steal our bandwidth!".

This isn't new. Yes, there are enshitificatory phenomena affecting Discord right now, as there are other platforms, but I don't really feel this is one of them.

Nothing they write is what they actually believe, it's simply what they want people to read.

This article from the EFF seems naive at best. They argue that Tier 1 ISPs should not police speech, which is fair, but their proposed solution is to just let hate sites sit around and radicalize people, then have the law deal with the few who cross the line between protected speech and criminal harassment.

Below is an extensive list of all the times 'just throw more cops at the problem' has solved anything:

    1. literally not once ever.
    2. See 1.

Now that those people are no longer needed, a lot of this cruft is being quietly dropped it seems. Wasteful indeed, but indicative of a truly broken political system that isn't fit for purpose and serves nobody but itself.
