i bought a lenovo thinkpad t480 to replace the annoyingly big chungus gaming laptop i lug around. but i am speccing it out with a bunch of things

  • ssd, from old laptop
  • 32gb ram, from old laptop
  • good wifi card, from old laptop

then i will replace the old gaming laptops lid with a fresh one that doesn't have stickers, keep the old one with stickers as a keepsake, and sell it to recoup most of costs.

@ret@furry.engineer avatar

@astrid @lunareclipse you can find decent size cheap SSDs that fit in the WWAN/Cellular slot too. Just some extra bonus storage space :blobfox_w: Love my T480

ret,
@ret@furry.engineer avatar

@astrid @lunareclipse it’s a dorky size though unfortunately. And obviously not the normal key for SSDs. I got a BC501:

They should be sanitising their database inputs rather than change the input data!

thank fuck JLC's depanelling service for standard PCBA is cheap. I was not looking forward to manually snapping rails off a hundred boards.

ret,
@ret@furry.engineer avatar

@gsuberland if they break one or more of your boards while they’re doing that, is that on them or you to cover? Or is there like a “we may break up to some %” thing? I know when you’re producing very small boards they say there’s some acceptable loss/damage %

Feels like everyone in knows I've got the decorator in the house.

Just had friendly conversation in the café with a couple who hitherto we'd only exchanged smiles.

First Q: "How's the decorator getting on?"

It started a few weeks ago when I shared it in the street with someone who occasionally joins the coffee table after which it's become the opening line with more folk than I thought I knew.

(Am somewhat flattered, in truth.)

This weekend's bonus project - make a probe mount for the MTP3000-series Tetra mobile's RF service port. Took a good few iterations of the "print → test → edit" cycle but I strangely enjoy that process. I should be able to connect these mobiles to the IFR 2968 now :blobfoxcofe:

The mount on the back of a mobile.
Another shot of the mount in place but from the top.
A shot showing how the mount holds the RF probe in place. The probe is attached to the mount with two screws. The mount clips into rails on the back of the mobile.

Been thinking about FT8, SSB and CW recently- with my compromise low power station, I can make many contacts with FT8, but I find it much harder with CW or SSB. I started thinking of these as “pre-information theory” modes, now I don’t feel so guilty that I’m augmenting my station with channel-noise-surmounting enhancements.
