Our session got cut short on Sunday by my work intruding. The previous session the Cell had chased down a Z'bri possessed Agnite who had attacked the two Guides, Halos and Den Hades, and stolen one of Halos' heartstones. They found the thief in a cellar underneath Ile Purdue (the “S&M bar” as I described it), along with the mangled body of another Agnite and a third, unknown body. Our friendly Jacker and our Doomsayer both got stabbed by the Agnite, and the Jacker was more seriously injured.1/x

The Cell drove the Z'bri out of the Agnite by one of the PCs putting an arrow into each arm, and the Z’bri escaped. Then they discovered that the second body was their fourth Cell member, the Doomsayer. He was unconscious but unharmed.

The Jacker returned the heartstone to Halos, the Guides as well as the Doomsayers were grateful, and everyone settled in for what was going to be some well-deserved downtime (had work not interrupted). 2/x

@rivetgeek@dice.camp avatar

It was discovered that just before the others had found the attack on the Guides, the Doomsayer had gone at Veruka the Wraith's behest to get information on them. Something went wrong, and the Doomsayer was knocked unconscious. For whatever reason, the possessed Agnite took them when it fled.

Right before we had to cut things short, something disturbing happened. 3/x

Both the Jacker, who was recovering from their injuries at the Goddess of Mercy Mission (and being doted on by Kymber Reva), and the Doomsayer resting in the Cell’s sanctuary were visited by the Z’bri.
It rendered everyone around them comatose, and told them that they needed to deliver the heartstone before the next new moon (a little over two weeks away) or it will kill everyone they care about. 4/x

I've run the official Avatar TRPG, Avatar Legends, a few times.

Overall, I think it's good. It's basic moves and playbook moves do a good job of reinforcing the themes of Avatar and I am glad they added a combat system since a lot of people were worried about that with PBTA.

My two complaints are:

@Covok I think it's a shame it wasn't Cortex. Nabbing both Avatar and the Dragon Prince would have been huge.

@Covok Fandom was all in for Cortex until the E-suite decided they were getting out of TTRPGs, likely when WotC began making noises about going digital. Odds are DDB was going to be the foundation, in terms of experience, if not infrastructure, for Cortex's online offerings. There was no reason for Fandom to hold on to Cortex. Negotiations for selling D&D Beyond would have taken *months, during which. *Fandom stopped most active support of Cortex. After the DDB sale, they stopped altogether.

rivetgeek,
@rivetgeek@dice.camp avatar

@Covok Fandom, in the initial phase before they decided to sell DDB (and to be clear, WotC pursued that, not the other way around - they were looking to take down what might have been their biggest digital competition by buying them out), would 100% have produced both games. And we'd still have social media outreach, and actual plays, and Primed by Cortex. I'd say there would have been a chance - albeit a slim one - that had Fandom had both properties they would have told WotC to stuff it.

rivetgeek,
@rivetgeek@dice.camp avatar

@Covok But regardless it was just bad timing for Fandom to get into the TTRPG space by buying Cortex in the first place. The same waves they hoped to ride were already being ridden by WotC. That's business unfortunately. They made a move to break into a new market, it didn't go as planned, and they got out.

The fact that a ttrpg system is not open won’t keep me from hacking it, but there’s a good chance it will keep me from being excited about hacking it.

rivetgeek,
@rivetgeek@dice.camp avatar

@rdonoghue It's probably a very well-trodden subject, but maybe relate that sentiment to Cam. Not that he may have a lot of say with his bosses on the matter, but it's definitely a stumbling block for people (not me particularly, I just want to see Cortex see the success it deserves).

Is there a way to replace button backs? I have some buttons where the pins have broken. Tbh I'd rather they have pin backs like my other pins instead of what buttons usually have, but I don't know if that's possible.

And I'm referring to buttons with a logo or picture and a pin on the back, like what you pin to your clothes.

rivetgeek,
@rivetgeek@dice.camp avatar

A solution is to get some replacement pin backs and epoxy them to the back of the badge. That seems like a really good idea considering I have some JB Weld.

@npilon Someone asked for advice on how they might dress at a loosely D&D-themed wedding and my response was Presto from the D&D cartoon.

The players take part of a big historical event, like WW2. Although they cannot change the issue of the war, what happens to them and their individual fates is entirely in their power.

Would you consider this railroading or have the players keep their agency, just they have little agency on the world itself?

rivetgeek,
@rivetgeek@dice.camp avatar

@ninoles It a player decided to shoot at the sun would you say they lacked agency because they couldn't kill it?

Railroading is when players lack agency. Not being able to stop a world war from being waged (or single handedly winning it) is no more railroading than not being able to shoot out the sun.

FATE has been a really easy system for me to slip into as a GM because the idea of treating everything like a "character" through Aspects has finally codified the endless DM notes I would make trying to spice up locations a bit

rivetgeek,
@rivetgeek@dice.camp avatar

@Da_Gut @zozo In Fate the dice are an afterthought compared to the base skill and bonuses from invokes.

As for gaming the GM, the jokes on them since I usually just rely on the players to say what aspects are appropriate and why. It needs to pass a sniff test but they don't need to try to argue a case for it. After all, I'm the one who chooses the consequences and outcomes.

rivetgeek,
@rivetgeek@dice.camp avatar

@MikeFerdinando @zozo @Da_Gut The difference I think is that Fandom really thought they could compete meaningfully with WotC until they realized they couldn't. But DWD didn't have any strategy at all and just doesn't quite know to do with a TTRPG. Cortex is a line item in their books. A rounding error compared to the revenue from their digital and board games.

But none of that stops the community from creating some really good shit, nor detracts from actually playing the game.

Our microwave broke a couple years ago and we haven't replaced it yet because we haven't really missed it.

…and because appliance shopping is kind of a nightmare.

…and because all appliances have apps now and I don't even want apps on my phone, let alone my microwave or whatever.

Anyway, looks like all the next generation of appliances will have some "AI" shit on them, so it looks like if I ever want a microwave again, I should get shopping now.

My wife has been putting money away to send me to this year. She just hasn't gotten the badge or hotel or anything yet. But I have zero idea of what I would actually do at GenCon. I don't know what to plan for really 😅

rivetgeek,
@rivetgeek@dice.camp avatar

@jmstar That might be my best next. I figure I'll just stumble around all over the place.

rivetgeek,
@rivetgeek@dice.camp avatar

@starhawk No clue tbh. Playing some games and hanging out with some cool people. I might see what events are available once those are announced.

rivetgeek,
@rivetgeek@dice.camp avatar

@starhawk Thanks. I've been to Indy multiple times, and my sons live close by. I'm working in some time to hang out with them too (not necessarily at GenCon).

Finally I fucking figured this out. We have a failover cluster that spans the LAX AZ and us-west-2 in AWS that just wouldn't fail over to us-west-2. It would time out moving the disk resource. Everything was right, no errors, etc. I increased the timeout for the cluster resource and it worked. 🤷‍♂️

Had my physical yesterday. My blood tests came back fine, the doctor says I just need a tetanus booster and a six pack abdomen to be in absolutely perfect health. I told him the latter won't happen, but I have old man strength.
