OK. This week I become a proper full-time EV zealot.

I have hired a petrol automatic for a week.

It’s crap. I hate it. It’s loud. It’s unresponsive. The brakes are harsh. Petrol is expensive and smells.

Its only redeeming feature is the range.

Everything else is worse.

(Hybrids probably represent a good half-way. But gosh I love my EV)

Any users here? I've just started testing it to see if it's better than Apple notes. I've created a couple notes and tagged them, but the tags aren't showing on the sidebar.

What am I doing wrong? This isn't a great first impression…

ross,
@ross@fosstodon.org avatar

@kev @asier How many columns are showing? Try pressing Ctrl-3 and see if another sidebar pops up? (Or view -> Show tags, notes and editor)

I enjoyed giving a talk, dare I even say it'd be fun to do another one? I don't know what else to talk about though. Do ideas for talks just come, like blog posts? Or should I ask followers for what they'd like to hear about?

ross,
@ross@fosstodon.org avatar

@sarajw Well done!

Personally, I find it odd that some people apply to speak at events with no idea what they will speak about, or ask people what they should speak about.

I've only ever done public speaking on a topic that I care about, know about, want to share with people, and think I can make entertaining in some way.

So, yeah, I submit talks when I have the ideas for them. And it's usually: I know lots about this interesting thing that an audience doesn’t!

I am This Close to ordering a garden office/studio. Exciting!!!

ross,
@ross@fosstodon.org avatar

@Noneeeed yeah. We don’t have space IN the house for an office. So we’re making space elsewhere. We are fortunate to have such a large garden!

Still freaks me out that “0” is falsey in PHP. In some ways that’s super clever. But in other ways it’s super annoying.

Proper type hints save the day regardless!

I've been talking a LOT at work about abstractions lately. They're probably all bored of me. And yet, abstractions are SO important.

In code, the right abstraction at the right time is such an enabler!

Darnit. Both Seagulls AND other vehicles using my car as target practice today.

I'm fine. The car is fine. A minor incident. Just annoying.

And it's covered in bird poop!!

when I release a zine, I always make a version that looks good when printed at home on a black-and-white printer

so today I'm at a cafe reviewing the black and white version of the git zine

@b0rk This person who lives a large shipping cost away and has a black and white laser jet is VERY appreciative of your work today. 🙌😃

@dvk It’s good huh? Just be prepared that the last 5% is kinda setting up the next book. But it is amazing.

@ross I'm getting a PHEV next week (not full, EV I appreciate but does 50 miles on battery, and I intend to use that as much as possible). Any advice you can share to get the best out of it would be appreciated.
One area I struggle with is understanding when public chargers are cheaper than using petrol, as comparing the 2 is tricky.

ross,
@ross@fosstodon.org avatar

@dartiss Interesting. Will you not charge at home/work?

Comparing really depends on your car’s efficiency. If you can get a miles-per-kWh figure you can do the math (or send it to me and I’ll do some).

Rapid (super-fast) chargers are the most expensive and usually 79p/kWh. My fully electric car does about 4.5 miles/kWh so it’s about 17.5p/mile.

For comparison, if you get 350 miles from 50l petrol at £1.50/l that’s 21.5p/mile

If I charge from home at 30p/kWh that’s 6.7p/mile!

ross,
@ross@fosstodon.org avatar

@dartiss Of course, your mileage may - literally - vary! 😉

Let me know if that helped or not. Happy to take further questions.

ross,
@ross@fosstodon.org avatar

@dartiss Ah right. Do you know if it has a CCS connector? Or just a “Type 2” (aka Mennekes)

ross,
@ross@fosstodon.org avatar

@dartiss so if range is 50m at 3miles/kWh the battery is… 16 or 17 kWh. It’ll probably take 3 hours to fully charge it. So I can’t see you doing a long drive with stops on just electric.

7kW charging is annoyingly slow. Really only suitable for home charging or when you park for a long time. You CAN top up while out and about but it’s hardly worth it if you’re not stopping long.

ross,
@ross@fosstodon.org avatar

@dartiss Hmm... I'm surprised you have CCS but only get 7kw charging. That seems odd.

In my experience the most expensive chargers are the equivalent of petrol. So worst case scenario is your no worse off.

BUuuuutt, there's so many variables. Petrol price, electric price, EV efficiency. To be honest, I’d try not to think about it too much. Charge when you can. Use petrol when you can’t.

ross,
@ross@fosstodon.org avatar

@dartiss hmm. Maybe I forgot something about the standards. But yes. Type-2 at home. CCS is for rapid charging. Which is why I’m confused. I thought Type-2 went up to 7kW

A good primer…

Been reading lots of solar system books with my kids since the eclipse and I’m thinking about gas giant planet like Jupiter. I’ve always been confused about how a non-solid surface could be a planet. But probably if life were to evolve on Jupiter they’d just be has floating beings who have built in jet packs to get around. Did Star Trek ever do that?

ross,
@ross@fosstodon.org avatar

@johnstonphilip I
read Iain Banks’s The Algebraist a long time ago. I think that had gas giant dwellers.

I used to get excited by big tech announcements. But now it's all just so uninteresting. Is this because I'm old? Is it because there's just SO MANY keynotes and product launches now that it's too hard to keep up? Or... has it actually become boring and mundane for others too?

Loving working on the serverless Scrabble clone. Nice, intricate logic. Fun to test!

https://words.pico.games/

Fixed some simple, but hard-to-find bugs for edge cases tonight. You can now actually play a game right to the end! 🤦‍♂️

I'm thankful for people playing and reporting bugs! 🙏

Key things to add:

  • Skip/swap tiles as a feature
  • Double/triple squares on the board

Then it’s kinda complete!

Nice to haves:

  • Some drag-and-drop or keyboard entry
  • Some instructions
  • Better UI/design
ross,
@ross@fosstodon.org avatar

@raphadue What do you mean by limit where you are allowed to place letters?

I use the original Scrabble tile set but without the blanks.

ross,
@ross@fosstodon.org avatar

@raphadue Thats a bad idea. You might accidentally load your opponents view of the game.

ross,
@ross@fosstodon.org avatar

@raphadue I don’t understand this one either. You should always get the same tiles for a given link. Can you explain more please?

Thanks for playing and for the ideas!!

ross,
@ross@fosstodon.org avatar

@raphadue Sure. You’re just less likely to accidentally do it if I don’t update the URL. There’s a certain amount of trust here.

ross,
@ross@fosstodon.org avatar

@raphadue Yeah. I don’t enforce that. Maybe one day. Doesn’t feel hugely necessary. Your opponent can just refuse your move if it’s wrong - same for dictionary. I could enforce English. But maybe you want to play your own dictionary?

It’s kinda like I give you the board and tiles. You bring the rules!
