Flatpak is still in the packager teething stage - itโ€™s going to be a couple/few years before all of the packaging and permission kinks are worked out. Thereโ€™s already progress, Iโ€™m spending a lot less time unfucking flatpak permissions with flatseal than I was in 2019.

I wish signal supported multiple devices, itโ€™s 2023 and I still canโ€™t check my messages from my tablet.

Thatโ€™s what happens when you openly express contempt for your userbase after doing nothing about spam or influence operations for 8+ years.

Oh, yeah, Lemmy is tiny by comparison. We have to post content instead of just consuming it.

Thanks for making the effort to host and support the community!

Ps: Boost gang! ๐Ÿš€

Itโ€™s also FOSS, Reddit changing their API fee structure was Reddit trying to capture all third party app income and RedReader generated none.

(Feature Request) Select custom tab provider

Small FR here - it would be really useful to be able to select which browser I want supplying the custom tab backend for Boost. Iโ€™d like to be able to use Firefox or Samsung Internet rather than just dumping everything into Chrome. I donโ€™t always want my random reddit clicks linked to my Google browser history. Previously...

Too many things assume Chrome when theyโ€™re handing off authentication tokens to an app so I just leave it as the default browser.

Something like linksheet would probably be the best way (short of selecting a custom tab provider anyway) of handling links but itโ€™s an overwhelming amount of setup to configure link handling for everything you have installed.

Pack the court.

seaQueue,
@seaQueue@lemmy.world avatar

Itโ€™s not like theyโ€™re going to resign and thereโ€™s no mechanism to remove them so, uh, unless youโ€™re advocating violence I donโ€™t see how thatโ€™s going to work. I think we need to pack the court up to around 17 justices and get back to the business of government instead of playing activist on guns, civil rights, corporate power and abortion.

seaQueue, (edited )
@seaQueue@lemmy.world avatar

Right, but that mechanism presupposes functional government and about half of the government doesnโ€™t give a shit about governing, or anything other than seizing power at the moment, so thatโ€™s not going to happen.

Mute is local client-side filtering, blocking happens server side.

When you mute something itโ€™s just filtered out of the view youโ€™re presented with in the client - youโ€™ll still see that content if you visit using a web browser.

Two points for anyone who hasnโ€™t read the article:

He pulled the fire alarm to delay the vote so that legislators had time to read what they were voting on - Republicans wanted to ram through a vote without waiting the agreed 72h to allow anyone to read the bill.

And:

Legislators are immune from prosecution of any crime less than a felony while theyโ€™re in session, so pulling the fire alarm doesnโ€™t matter anyway. No one can touch this dude for this, the worst they can do is make angry noises on TV.

Delay is a weird way to phrase โ€œnot planned any time in the next few years.โ€

Fediverse Redirect - Have ANY Lemmy link open in Sync (github.com)

The one annoying thing about Lemmy over Reddit, is that youโ€™ll open a link from somewhere on the web and the Lemmy Instanceโ€™s site loads instead of your preferred client app. Sync already supports around a hundred instances but thereโ€™s way more out there than that. However, there is a solution! Fediverse Redirect acts as a...

Works great with Boost. Iโ€™m also using the mastodon redirect tool as well.

Theyโ€™re made using Stable Diffusion and the controlnet model. You use a black & white image to bias SD toward the design you want as the hidden message in the final image. If you saw the renaissance village spiral image thatโ€™s been all over the internet for a couple of weeks these are made the same way:

news.ycombinator.com/item?id=36832271

reddit.com/โ€ฆ/free_tool_to_generate_hidden_text_usโ€ฆ

Theyโ€™re GPU time intensive so I donโ€™t know of any free site thatโ€™ll make them for you, most people just fire up stable diffusion locally. Iโ€™m sure someone will come up with a minified model thatโ€™s cheap enough to do that eventually but I donโ€™t think it exists yet.

Or if you want to check your messages on more than one device. I donโ€™t like telegram much but I use it because I can access my messages from both my phone and tablet, signal is locked to my phone and my pc.

I know people donโ€™t really like systemd much but goddamn if systemd-boot isnโ€™t easier to work with than grub. On my last two Arch installs Iโ€™ve used systemd-boot and I have absolutely no complaints. I donโ€™t alway need an entire mini OS to boot my kernel.

seaQueue,
@seaQueue@lemmy.world avatar

I think weโ€™ve all felt the pain of dealing with brittle or overly complicated grub installs before.

Itโ€™s last weekโ€™s big libwebp vulnerability again.

Edit: this underlying vuln is why last weekโ€™s CVE was such a big deal, anything using webp is at risk including a whole big pile of electron apps that everyone uses.

seaQueue,
@seaQueue@lemmy.world avatar

Itโ€™s the full disclosure of the ImageIO webp vuln from last week, this is the root cause.

Itโ€™s Chromium in different (Microsoft branded) clothes with whatever gewgaws Microsoft can hang off it for contractual income. Occasionally thereโ€™s a good reason to use edge over Chromium, but thatโ€™s limited to shit like โ€œit can stream 1080p content from Netflixโ€ and such. Itโ€™s not outright bad like ie was but I donโ€™t see the reason to use it daily over, say, Chromium.

seaQueue,
@seaQueue@lemmy.world avatar

If youโ€™re using Linux, obviously you wouldnโ€™t be using Edge.

Says you, itโ€™s pretty good for streaming 1080p content sometimes. For a while it was the only way to get 1080p streams from Netflix on Linux so it does have limited utility.
