@361podcast Was thinking about the podcast a few days ago and was mourning its passing. I’d given up hope! Looking forward to listening to this 👍

This “call to action” for Universities to join the fediverse is a fair summary of the benefits and costs, but moderation is a huge liability. So I wonder if academically focussed apps like OKLi might tip the balance and make it more obviously worth their while… https://netzpolitik.org/2023/a-call-to-action-universities-of-the-world-into-the-fediverse/

    @ianbetteridge Also if a social media company want to build a social media town square they would need to do so under contract from the elected social media town council and run it towards the ends agreed by social media town councillors we vote for.

    New job! Next month I will be starting as a lecturer in medical education with the postgrad team at Cardiff’s School of Medicine. Sad to be leaving a great team at the Learning and Teaching Academy but super excited to be embarking on this new role!

    ✨ Sneak Peek of Sign-in with Mastodon

    We're almost ready to ship this ground breaking feature which vastly improves our onboarding experience for Mastodon users!

    It will be shipping later today after I (@dansup) get some sleep, sorry it's a bit late, this is a complex feature.

    is purely an ActivityPub server, so Fediverse client/servers can be separated. Very interesting project that could develop new ways of engaging with the Fediverse (the possibility of this sort of thing is what makes the Fediverse so much more interesting than any platform…)

    Lots we don’t know about what Threads will do yet. But I think @ian is right. A few hours in and it’s clear it’s killed Twitter (which tbf was already dying) and Bluesky (which had barely begun). https://ianbetteridge.com/2023/07/06/some-quick-thoughts-on-threads/

    simonwood,
    @simonwood@mastodon.social avatar

    @ian John Gruber claims “If you liked Twitter, you’ll love Bluesky. If you hated Twitter, you’ll like Mastodon.” But Threads is for people who liked Twitter too. Mastodon’s differentiation works to its benefit here.

    @ianbetteridge Yeah, I can see the appeal in making it easy to get started. But things like alt text and hashtags don’t feel like power features to me. Quick to get started but painful to sort the signal to noise ratio. But plenty will be happy with noise from celebs and brands so I don’t expect it to go away. And if it proves not to be a monstrously malign citizen of the fediverse, I look forward to being able to follow people and orgs who will do Threads but not Mastodon.

    respros, to random

    Set up a Threads account out of curiosity. It is junk. Feed is a load of spam from accounts I don't want to see. No way to access via a web browser.

    simonwood,
    @simonwood@mastodon.social avatar

    @respros Yeah, it doesn’t suit me. Very easy to set up, not so easy to use it productively (It’s simple yet still confusing - I’m left wondering: What’s the point of following - there’s no follow stream? Why aren’t my hashtags working? How the hell to I add alt text?) Mind you, I suspect I’m not the target demographic, and it’s years since I used Instagram.
