Chicago police won't discipline 9 officers tied to Oath Keepers extremist group (chicago.suntimes.com)

Chicago Police Department leaders said Thursday they have decided not to punish any officers whose names appeared on the leaked membership list of the Oath Keepers, an anti-government extremist group that played a key role in the Jan. 6, 2021, riot at the U.S. Capitol....

I was lucky enough to see Bruce Perens speak at Linux Expo in 1997.

Egads, that was a long time ago. O.o

Do you think the House writ large needs to pass another bill before November or was this sufficient to earn their keep?

Just off the top of my head? FAA reauthorization, FY2025 federal budget package, …oh that pesky temporary stopgap funding measure to re-up this summer, some election integrity bills…

I’m still very dubious of the argument in favor of House Dems working with Repubs.

Compromise starts somewhere, and someone has to go first. Will it be the Dems? Probably. In 2024? Meh. Probably better to not.

I’d rather suffer through a few more months of a do nothing congress, and then sweep the House into a Democratic super majority

For the next Congress? Sure, why not? I know who I’m voting for already. I’m not young myself, but I have young adult chikdren. I’d like to see a more progressive agenda for their sake. The best tree is the one you planted 20 years ago. The next best tree is the one you plant today.

I have a few automations:

  • Between 11pm and 7am, and if not connected to a list of BT headsets or speakers: lower the main media volume to 0.
  • If one of a list of apps is on the main screen: activate screen auto-rotate, then disable it as an exit task.
  • If the phone is less than 30m from the lat/lon of the center of my house: set a variable NEAR_HOME=1, and set NEAR_HOME=0 as an exit task
  • If my phone is not connected to my home SSID and NEAR_HOME isn’t set: activate the Wireguard profile to connect to my home router, and deactivate it as an exit task
  • At 9am every day, issue a notification showing the number of days remaining to a significant date occurring later this year.

I used to have several more to correct certain idiosyncrasies my phone would have on boot, low battery and a few other repeatable conditions, but those things got fixed with system updates, or ceased to be relevant.

I, myself, will be burning some logs, drinking some whiskey, listening to some jams and will most likely toss a Magic Pouch on the fire at some appropriately late hour. It’s a school night though, I work a regular job.

The U.S. declaration concerns a single Israeli unit and its actions against Palestinian civilians in the West Bank before Israel’s war with Hamas in Gaza began in October. While the unit is not identified in Blinken’s letter, it is believed to be the Netzah Yehuda, which has historically been based in the Israeli-occupied West Bank.

Ah. These guys. Again.

Probably nothing moe than these are lonely older men who have forgotten how to interact with people socially, and you’re new. I’d most likely have tuned out the first two, but that last guy sounds like he just wants to talk. If he was in the service, he might have some entertaining (if embellished) stories to tell. I’d have engaged.

You probay have a quiet, attentive and impassive way about yourself. Look people In the eye while they talk? Not volunteer much about yourself? Sort of an “aw, shucks,” answer to most of what people lay on you? Don’t offer suggestions about their problems because they’re not yours and who the hell.are these people anyway?

Welcome to life as a Father Confessor! I say, get yourself ordained with the UU church ($65 and they send you a certificate, papers, and a card!) or the Subgenii (instant ordination AND salvation, just $44.99!), and learn to say anything other than “sorry” when people lay bad their bad mojo on you. Challenge them with uplifting suggestions like, “have you considered a life of public service,?” Or “Have you considered volunteering in a soup.kitchen?” If that fails, evangelize the Church of Bob or Joshua or Offler or whatever until they go stop.

6 times In 10 they clam up.and go away. 4 times in 10 the soup kitchen gets a volunteer for the evening, and maybe 1 time on 10 of those they keep at it.

Think of it as a public.good.

I understand most of the stack from photons to UX. I run optical, packet hardware and I define software. I consult on security and I inform the service desks. I’m that “break glass” guy you don’t want to call in the middle if the night because I might be sarcastic, and then I’ll cancel meetings for the next two days in revenge.

I’ve also been in this swamp since before the sky learned how to rain.

Call me whatever you want, but you’d best smile when you say it or I’ll delete your account and blackhole your network.

☝️ Just flexing.

“Full stack” is meant to be complimentary but is also highly situational, in the same way credentialed engineers and credentialed architects bristle when those.terms are used in the tech sector. They Did the Program, and Showed the Work. Those.of us in the tech sector are doing some stolen valor.by adopting those titles in our roles.

“Full stack” is situational because no two shops use the same stack. Every shop has its own technology preferences, so if you know Apache and ServiceNow, you’ll still be useless in a shop that uses Xendesk and Nginx. It just.means you know YOUR venue’s technology organization.

Really it’s an industry buzz term, and you should run from any recruiters who casually use it but can’t also describe exactly WHAT stack that shop they’re pimping is using.
