A 15” MacBook Air certainly feels to me like it might become the most popular Mac in the lineup. If only the damn thing came in brighter, more-fun colors, even seasonal color changes like iPhone… /concepts via @parkerortolani

Is there any reason an app would suddenly stop receiving push notifications? No error messages on the push server that I could see. Once I called unregisterForRemoteNotifications, then registerForRemoteNotifications to receive a new device token, the app was able to receive notifications just fine.

stroughtonsmith,
@stroughtonsmith@mastodon.social avatar

@brianmueller I've seen it on macOS where notifications were being delivered to a different copy of the app on disk (in the Archives folder, of all places) when I haven’t incremented the build number

Oh no, the Audible app added support for Spatial Audio in a way that breaks the faux-surround ‘Spatialize Stereo’ mode on iOS 😰 I was wondering why my books sounded so much worse this week…

stroughtonsmith,
@stroughtonsmith@mastodon.social avatar

@b3ll it’s great in bed, in the dark. Like being in a room with the narrator. Books sound broken now

@stroughtonsmith Back in the day when there were real Macs, all-in-one mono units, I used a utility called QED/M, which was similar to grep. Is grep part of current MacOS? Or anything like it for iPadOS?

stroughtonsmith,
@stroughtonsmith@mastodon.social avatar

@mikecane …I think you're looking for Keyboard Maestro and/or BBEdit? The grep commandline tool is part of macOS though, yes. And you have Spotlight for full text search

This magnetic 12.9” iPad arm from Kuxiu looks like the stand of my dreams; it's the perfect kind of mount to float above my painting desk. Anybody have one of these? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bZpXTcWNyvw

@stroughtonsmith Is there a URL for the ATP live stream that works with Broadcasts? We get this question from listeners, but I don't know the answer.

stroughtonsmith,
@stroughtonsmith@mastodon.social avatar

@siracusa I have a TinyURL that brings up UI to add it: https://tinyurl.com/addATPToBroadcasts

I know it's just an iOS app, but man I really appreciate having the Audible app on macOS. It just makes listening to audiobooks while working in my painting area effortless, and its position sync hasn't failed me yet

@stroughtonsmith Look at this AI art from the other place. It's like those things you paint!

@mikecane it's from Midjourney, I approve of Midjourney; cut out the middleperson. I've made a few of my own

@stroughtonsmith Still rumors of 15" iPad Pro or no?

stroughtonsmith,
@stroughtonsmith@mastodon.social avatar

@mikecane nothing credible, just vague ‘larger iPad' that may not even be in the Pro lineup

Taking the little bit of downtime I have to write a version of the @broadcastsapp watch app in SwiftUI. Initial bringup was pretty fast, so I can now investigate expanding into new features. Still experimental, not committing to anything just yet

stroughtonsmith,
@stroughtonsmith@mastodon.social avatar

Potential upsides: being able to create more interesting layouts, and expanding the Now Playing screen

It is nice to break out of the older constraints with the watchOS app. SwiftUI is marginally better than WatchKit 😝

Now Playing view is a work in progress, but it's all for nought if there's no way to show an audio route picker on watchOS 😕

I finally plugged GPT-3 into @pastelapp to generate color palettes from text prompts, and it just does exactly what I hoped it might do. How I wish I could do this with an on-device Siri API call; I don't intend to ship with a dependency on OpenAI, so for now this is a 'maybe someday’ feature

stroughtonsmith,
@stroughtonsmith@mastodon.social avatar

Today's task in @pastelapp is to rewrite the color wheel to move it off third-party ObjC code and bring it in-house in Swift. Almost done — it’s so much smoother to interact with now, even if there are still a couple bugs to work out. Pastel is still a ways off being Swift-only, about 6,000 lines to go, but it’s nice to be able to get major improvements as I do-over each class

It’s taken longer than I’d hoped, but I’m nearly done with these guys. 70%/80%/90% respectively. Bare head leader guy is going to get some fancy checkerboarding on the knee, which is going to extend the process a bit

stroughtonsmith,
@stroughtonsmith@mastodon.social avatar

@nevison I use sable brushes for all mini work — Winsor & Newton Series 7 Kolinsky. Size 1 for normal painting, Size 0 for chunky highlights, Size 000 for fine highlights. I also got a cheap wet palette from Amazon which helps keep the paint thin and flowy. My current battle is with dust, as I paint minis bit by bit over a week or so and that starts to interfere with the brush, so I've taken to storing the models in sealed plastic containers when I'm not actively painting. But, practice!

stroughtonsmith,
@stroughtonsmith@mastodon.social avatar

@nevison if you want to make life a little easier, use a basecoat spray rattlecan like Macragge Blue for a consistent, thin base layer. Brushes + palette should neaten up the paint job for sure, but mostly it's gonna be about getting familiar/confident with the process. You'll know you're facing a tooling issue when the tools just aren't able to do the thing you're trying to do (/copy from YouTube), and it's not just you 😄
