Non-disabled developer working on accessibility doesn't put keyboard/usage instructions in aria labels challenge 2024 (Impossible)!

This GitHub hovercard thing is actually really bad. Get rid of it. I was never much one for custom scripts but since I have to use this crap for work, I might have to. I'm already in space with how much this drove me up the wall in just a few short minutes.

Firefox? Are you OK? What’s up? 8 years? Even Safari managed to do this. Safari! Now I have to find some hack just for you. How disappointing. https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1283029

I’m pretty sure I’ve posted at least once about another feature that everyone else had that only you didn’t. And yes, that includes Safari. Firefox… oh Firefox. Why do you do this to me?

talon,
@talon@dragonscave.space avatar

@KaraLG84 I am definitely putting in effort to get it to work on Firefox as well. It’s my main browser. Just a shame that web audio and friends just simply work better in Chromium browsers, and web audio is a large part of what I do both professionally and personally. :(

@KaraLG84 I’ll have a look and file it. :)

Breaking news: ChatGPT is down. The tech sector completely collapses as nobody remembers how to do work anymore. Execs slowly weep into their expensive coffee mugs and ruin their suits over lost profit. Some hearings have to be postponed as lawyers no longer have the ability to accurately defend. "The effects of this singular centralized service falling over are much higher than anticipated, maybe someone should have warned us about this!" one person remarked when questioned about the matter. But the damage is done. "We decided to give everyone a 4 day work week by disabling our service on Tuesdays," an anonymous source at OpenAI told us upon request for comment.
Microsoft seems to have been hit by this the hardest. The poor unpaid intern who accidentally pressed "y" instead of "n" on the OpenAI Azure cluster is now facing an absolutely unprecedented amount of scrutiny from techbros world wide and can kiss their silicon valley dreams goodbye. Though some are speculating that this is a clever move by an Anthropic operative to get some of ChatGPT's core userbase over to Claude instead. What will happen next? Stay with us as the mystery deepens and we unravel what might be the as of yet silent AI company melee slowly leaking over into the mainstream media.

I finally made the hop from pfSense to OPNsense for my router in the name of security, more frequent updates, and the whole Netgate being terrible thing. Everything is great except for the part where we took 10 huge steps back in terms of SR accessibility. Unfocusable modals with aria-hidden set to true, buttons containing only a title attribute, and a11y-relevant GitHub issues that have gone stale or are closed - see https://github.com/opnsense/core/issues/905.

@tristan welp... 2016. Heh. I was going to make the switch, but will definitely be a lot more cautious now...

Voice Vista’s breadcrumb feature is honestly amazing. Went for a 3 hour ish walk through forest and fields and there was no issue at all, even when mobile data cut out. Accuracy was always good, it didn’t lead me off my path once, it was so worth it and I’m gonna be doing this again. A lot. This is incredible stuff. I feel lucky that my brother is the kind of person who’ll happily set up breadcrumb trails for me. I stopped a few times to check where I was, and even though there were no points of interest or other markers around, and very limited connectivity, the beacons never stopped working. Seriously I’m very impressed. This is just really very good. The main thing I wish for is having a more dynamic breadcrumb system where you can link beacons together so that it can use them to calculate paths from A to B that haven’t specifically been set manually, but even in it’s current state I’m really happy with it.

@talon@dragonscave.space avatar

@zersiax well yes. Accuracy here was about 5m, so you’re probably not going to be navigating hotels with it anytime soon. :P I did use it to walk around a city though, and even if it wasn’t fully accurate, it was a huge help. But you’re right, big open spaces are of course much, much easier for the constraints. That said, part of my walk did take me through streets and intersections especially at the beginning and end, and beacons + map data + mobility skills were definitely enough to navigate it. But I do plan to take this to somewhere I’ve never been anywhere close to and try again, so we’ll see how well that works. It’s definitely not a silver bullet for sure, but it’s a free app that surprises me every time I use it. :) there’s no reason not to have and use it if you have an iOS device. Oh and of course how well the map data is where you plan to use it or how thorough your route is mapped out. So yeah a lot of factors.

@drew I don’t know. Keep thinking about getting another droid but haven’t so far. I keep going on about it but that keyboard thing really bothers me so much. lol

talon,
@talon@dragonscave.space avatar

@KaraLG84 @zersiax It’s a continuation of the SoundScape code with a bunch of new features.

talon,
@talon@dragonscave.space avatar

@zersiax I used airpods pro’s. They have head tracking functionality and that works with Voice Vista. I haven’t tried it any other way yet, although keeping it in a pocket might be good enough.

talon,
@talon@dragonscave.space avatar

@zersiax Give it a shot and let me know how it works out. But I think having the phone in your pocket should be good enough. As long as it's not too angled and still points roughly forward.

talon,
@talon@dragonscave.space avatar

@zersiax The back of the phone. So the camera. Screen towards you.

Ooooh should Pinball Dad stick his toe in the Linux Discourse

I've been on it since 2010, I guess I should maybe?

How about I stick my whole entire foot in, maybe if I poison it with my footstink then it'll die down a bit

talon,
@talon@dragonscave.space avatar

@zersiax being worked on :) there's a demo here https://thisweek.gnome.org/posts/2024/05/twig-148/

talon,
@talon@dragonscave.space avatar

@zersiax Oh I don't disagree. Simply not ready for me yet either. There is amazing work being done but it is going to take time and effort. Luckily I diversified from windows a while ago and got as comfortable as I could, but so far that doesn't yet include Linux desktop and also not everyone can. Especially not as quickly as things going down hill lately.

In C# you can do:
someVar is > 10 and < 100 and not 60
and I think that's beautiful.

talon,
@talon@dragonscave.space avatar

@emilvolk ok but now you gotta explain which half is the joke ;)

talon,
@talon@dragonscave.space avatar

@emilvolk hey I don't judge. If you like writing C, then by all means you should be able to write C in peace. Or Zig!

talon,
@talon@dragonscave.space avatar

@TheQuinbox oh that's pretty neat!

talon,
@talon@dragonscave.space avatar

@emilvolk I recently looked at Java again because I stumbled across something that I've been looking for for years, and was quite pleasantly surprised. At some point pragmatism just wins out for me, and if that thing I wanted is written in Java/for the JVM, then there's no reason for me not to just... use it. I want a thing done, this does the thing, good enough for me!

talon,
@talon@dragonscave.space avatar

@emilvolk uh... this is a library. Not an end user app. That was probably not very clear. So choice of libraries/tools influenced me using Java again. And that's fine!

talon,

@KyleBorah fixed

@KyleBorah Also maybe don’t call people idiots for something that might be a mistake? Just a little thought.
