@tapandrollgames@mastodon.social

Online retailer for Magic: The Gathering & Flesh and Blood, as well as an occasional variety of other TCGs, miniatures, video games, and other nerdy ephemera.

There may also be occasional commentary about Politics (Liberal-aligned), Satisfactory, MLB (Orioles), US Soccer, and anything else which strikes my fancy.

Seeking asylum from Twitter, but struggling with the degree of difficulty in extracting similar usefulness here.

With and appearing to have recent problems with organized labor, I gotta ask again: When buying singles online, which website do you use that isnโ€™t TCGPlayer, eBay, or Card Kingdom?

tapandrollgames,
@tapandrollgames@mastodon.social avatar

@IcatianJ

[Completely biased opinion, as an independent seller on eBay:]

eBay the company sucks. But it's also purely a marketplace. The sellers there are as good as they choose to be. eBay profits -- in a lot of cases, more than is justifiable -- but you're not doing business with an entity which is driving labor abuse. You're dealing with real people. Some of them are even decent.

[Yes, I know eBay owns TCGPlayer, but all indications are that they function completely independently.]

@npicone Crime is for criminals. What is the behavior that you want to single out as being "only for gays"?

tapandrollgames,
@tapandrollgames@mastodon.social avatar

@npicone But you definitely want "gay" to somehow be different? Why can't gay just be gay? Why does it have to have some special property other than just being a state of existence?

Here's a $5 off $100 code at MinMaxGames for anyone who wants it. It's not a huge discount, but they're currently the cheapest place with stock to order the MTG Fallout deck sets ($168 w/free shipping), and every little bit helps...

I realised when scanning my cards from Friday's draft that I got one with the subtly-altered art! That lampshade isn't usually green.

tapandrollgames,
@tapandrollgames@mastodon.social avatar

@astrovore

The "normals" and the "variants" appear in a 50/50 distribution. WotC still hasn't figured out that short prints sell packs. They act like what works in the sports card world would never work in the TCG world, which is absurdly narrow-minded. Serialized cards are nice, but they shouldn't be the only special finds available.

tapandrollgames,
@tapandrollgames@mastodon.social avatar

@astrovore

Yeah, it's kind of absurd. I broke 12 cases in total. The distribution between the variants came out within 5% of each other, which is perfectly normal for any specific card within a rarity over that quantity of product.

My guess is that they wanted to make sure there was plenty of the variations in circulation for those who are trying to solve the case on the website.

Off-color instant-speed card draw with a creature/artifact sac outlet in Standard/Modern metas where "useless" artifacts are plentiful and Rakdos mechanics are overrepresented? Yeah, this card's not staying at $0.20. This has "Deadly Dispute-esque price spike" written all over it...

At some point, it will spike to $1.50-$2.00. Long-term, it will settle in around $1.00. It's sure as heck not a bulk common, though.

's new Ravnica: Clue Edition's price is in line with other offeringsโ€ฆ 8 JumpStart Boosters would cost me between $40 and $50 and "Premium" versions of Clue are in the $30 to $40 rangeโ€ฆ so $75 is about right.

Still too expensive for me. Also, it's sold out at my LGS and $80 to $100 online.

Worth Noting: The rules included in Ravnica: Clue Edition have been posted online so MY plan is to pull out the cards and notebooks from my $10 copy of Clue and play with existing decks.

tapandrollgames,
@tapandrollgames@mastodon.social avatar

@SinbadEV

FWIW, if you're in the US, $60-ish is a somewhat readily-available price.

This is $59.97 at GameNerdz. "Free" shipping doesn't kick in until $75, but if you need/want $15.03 of anything else, it's a fair price. https://www.gamenerdz.com/magic-the-gathering-murders-at-karlov-manor-ravnica-clue-edition-preorder

tapandrollgames,

@Gazimoff

If you're planning on having any X-cost finishers or planning on really flooding the board with large creatures, there are worse choices than Jaheira, Friend of the Forest.

A very (VERY) slight upside is that it would also give you access to a background if you wanted. Master Chef would probably make the most sense; Cloakwood Hermit would probably be the second-most relevant. Neither are great, but having unfettered access to a 3-mana dump spell later in the game isn't bad.

tapandrollgames,
@tapandrollgames@mastodon.social avatar

@Gazimoff

Yeah, the only way it would not be a good idea is if you already have too much ramp and no pay-offs. The classic Green conundrum of "ramp-to-nothing". But if you can find a couple spells with variable costs/kickers/etc., it can make a lot more sense. Some artifact bombs might also fit into the deck strategy to various extents (Emrakul, Blightsteel Colossus, Ulamog, Hangarback Walker, Walking Ballista, Orochi Hatchery).

Iโ€™m a little late to this, but Wizards is shifting Magic: The Gatheringโ€™s Secret Lair from Print on Demand to Limited Run.

I predict that this will be a disaster.

Why? Scalpers.

Nowadays, anything in limited supply that has high value and easy secondary market will be scalped. I also think that Wizards is completely unprepared for the level of scalping.

tapandrollgames,
@tapandrollgames@mastodon.social avatar

@Gazimoff

What I hope is happening:

The cost to WotC to produce a standard 4- to 6-card secret lair product -- especially in the new envelope packaging -- is probably <$2.00. (It could actually be less than $1.00, realistically).

If they look at in the sense of "we could fire-sale these at $10 and still make a profit after shipping", that means they can print every set into oblivion and just create a "Past Secret Lair Bargain Bin" to sell overprints.

That would keep scalpers at bay.

Mythweaver Poq is so miserable to play against in brawl. Like even if you remove it, they play one land when it comes into play and they can recast it next turn and it comes back bigger. It only costs four so you can pretty consistently cast it at turn 3. Like it just feels like an inevitable loss. It's miserable. I think the only way to rebalance it would be to make it cost 7 or to make it a 4/4 instead of having it grow.

Yay, FedEx has confirmed that my Secret Lair shipment has been lost. Now I have to wait for WotC/Scalefast to respond to my support messages.

I think Iโ€™ll implement a chargeback via PayPal if I donโ€™t get a response within 7 days.

This has been my experience. Until I make it so they can't ignore it, they continue to ignore it. If I post about what absolute shits they are on Twitter, I magically get an update on my ticket within hours. If I do nothing, literal months will pass. I've had one (relatively) lower-cost ticket open since November 16. Still hasn't been resolved.

Their strategy seems to work, though, because I don't file a LOT of justified requests due to it just not being worth the headache.

I didn't think that WotC's customer service would be worse than FedEx's, but here we are...

tapandrollgames,
@tapandrollgames@mastodon.social avatar

@Gazimoff

WotC's customer service is some of the worst I have ever dealt with. Regardless of their apparent thoughts otherwise, it is not normal for a company to ROUTINELY take a month to respond to a customer request, then take another 1-2 months in addressing that request.

I know multiple players who have stopped playing Magic entirely because WotC took several months to get them a replacement for a damaged $10 card.

I've been working on a new deck box concept/design. I'm now confident enough in the fit/finish to put it out in the world.

RE: This deck box...

Hot or not?
Hit it or quit it?
Smash or pass?
F**k, marry, or kill?

I'm a few weeks away from actually being able to put it out into the world as a final product ($16.99 shipped?), but I want to explore any noteworthy refinements.

Feedback welcome!

So I collect these split-format cards, and I can't think of a good way to organize them in an album.

If I order them by name, you can compare the different printings (sometimes they change the artwork), but more reprintings come regularly and I'd have to constantly move them around.

If I order them by release date, then you can't compare the printings of the same card.

What do you think I should do?

Trust me, if eBay offered better protection for shipping internationally, I would. The problem is that I've been screwed over too many times and eBay has consistently failed to follow through on following their policies. It just got to the point where the fraud and lost mail was too expensive to continue.

[I am likely that seller on eBay. There are a few others who sell singles, but I'm the primary one selling them as sets.]

I think it already is. I don't know why Disney chose Ravensberger, but it has definitely not panned out well. I'm guessing that Ravensberger was willing to offer the higher percentage of sales, as that's about the only thing which makes sense. This seems like it's going to be a case of the manufacturer screwing a product up so bad that people just aren't caring about giving it a second chance even after the issues have been sorted out. I actually never got enough Lorcana to stock it.
