@tapandrollgames@mastodon.social

Online retailer for Magic: The Gathering & Flesh and Blood, as well as an occasional variety of other TCGs, miniatures, video games, and other nerdy ephemera.

There may also be occasional commentary about Politics (Liberal-aligned), Satisfactory, MLB (Orioles), US Soccer, and anything else which strikes my fancy.

Seeking asylum from Twitter, but struggling with the degree of difficulty in extracting similar usefulness here.

For anyone hoping to fill out their decks with TARDIS lands from the new Doctor Who set: The decks have SIGNIFICANTLY fewer basic lands than normal for pre-con commander decks, and these lands will be in shorter supply than usual.

A set of all four decks has only 33 basic lands, broken down as follows:

3x Plains 196
2x Plains 197
6x Island 198
5x Island 199
1x Swamp 200
1x Swamp 201
5x Mountain 202
3x Mountain 203
4x Forest 204
3x Forest 205

I don't play , I only dabble in , but I'm a big fan and I really like the card art. Convince me otherwise to not get the cards. (Oh, and this argument will be repeated in 2025 when the MTG cards are out.)

tapandrollgames,
@tapandrollgames@mastodon.social avatar

@journ

The biggest reason I can think of to not get them is that all of the decks are tailored to a specific style of play.

It's on-theme for Doctor Who, but if you don't enjoy gameplay centered on counter manipulation, screwing around with other players' decks, putting cards into multiple different play areas, and constantly searching/tutoring for specific cards in specific situations, it might be a pass.

I knew I would find it less enjoyable as soon as I saw that every deck featured blue.

Anyone else having issues with posts from "@kind.social" accounts not showing up on their servers? I've had quite a few posts from accounts I follow there not showing up in my feed, and only showing up after someone on a third server (whom I also follow) boosts them.

It's as if there's a block in place somewhere between that server and the one I'm on ("@mastodon.social").

It's bizarre, and more than a little annoying.

No offense to the commenter that tried to "um actually" us, but who is spreading this misinformation that you can't respond to cycling? It's an activated ability, not a special action. It uses the stack and players can respond!

tapandrollgames,
@tapandrollgames@mastodon.social avatar

@SmoothBrainEDH

I can understand someone not understanding that discarding is part of the activation cost, but thinking it's a special ability (and being so sure of themselves that they would get in an argument) is a bit weird.

What’s actually going on with the Doctor Who Commander Decks? Friday is the release and I’ve read that there weren’t enough products printed and pre-orders are being cancelled?

tapandrollgames,
@tapandrollgames@mastodon.social avatar

@barning

This could be completely dependent upon the region. In the US, I've seen several retailers post restocks in the past few days. However, it's worth noting that different regions are printed/distributed at multiple different locations, which can lead to shortages/delays in some regions, but not in others.

If anyone wants $5 off their order at MinMax Games, have at 'er...

https://loox.io/z/dXdysdNMV

They're among the cheapest online retailers with Doctor Who Commander deck sets still in stock. 10-12% less than the "big" online retailers.

[Obviously, if you spend hours per week playing at your LGS, buy them there. Even if they're more expensive. If your LGS is providing you with a safe/comfortable place to play, that's not free.]

This number seems kind of impossible seeing it as just a standalone statistic. Then I remember the hours I spend every week filling orders and it seems a lot more plausible...

@JHein@mastodon.social avatar

Magic the Gathering players, I have a confession. I am a blue player.

I have 4 commander decks, 3 of which have blue as one of its colors. Only 2 out of 4 of those decks are fun and interactive to play against. I just have to accept that this is part of who I am now. There is no escaping the truth.

One time, I was playing an artifact deck, and my board state allowed me to play infinite counterspells so no one could play cards anymore.

I have, and am a curse.

So, we should all have to walk around covered in bandages because your insecurity requires you to have an insufferable twat of a therapy dog...? 🤔

😂

tapandrollgames,
@tapandrollgames@mastodon.social avatar

@espercontrol

It's not trying to convey a comfortable understanding. It's pointing out that you're putting your own play priorities before anyone else's. As if your ability to play the way you want to is singularly more important than anyone else getting to play the way they want to. Esper control has always been more than powerful enough to be frustrating to anyone else. You still have access to more than enough bounce and exile spells to allow you to play your style.

tapandrollgames,
@tapandrollgames@mastodon.social avatar

@espercontrol

I don't take it seriously at all, which is why I get pissed off when I cast 10 spells and none of them stick because the other person is so wrapped up in pleasuring themselves that they don't actually want any interaction to occur between them and the other person. I care about the social interactions, which is why I want both players to be able to come to a game and have fun. Maybe consider how the other person feels when you're spending the entire game telling them "no".

karlpybara, to mtg

Might be a boomer moment, but I really hate how has really shifted its product design to be more of an online game, rather than paper.

Like every card having dozens of alt-art, textless, etc. versions is fine on since you can just hover the card to see the original version and know what it does, but in paper magic it makes card recognition, clarity & accessibility a living hell. Some of these cards I can't even read for god's sake!

tapandrollgames, (edited )
@tapandrollgames@mastodon.social avatar

@karlpybara

The stupid people who are easily entertained by more words on cards, needlessly complex mechanics, and shiny things are the same stupid people who are easily fleeced of their money. More discerning players spend less.

I agree with everything you said, but also know this is a slippery slope we are never going to climb up again. This is the endless cycle of the hype-driven gaming space now.

axiomnibus, to rant

JFC, I cannot watch Commander Clash from the folks at mtggoldfish- they talk over each other constantly, fail to explain important interactions, giggle like a bunch of chuckle-fucks, and drag the game on forever... Stop talking over each other as much as you do, take the time to show the audience (did you forget you had an audience?) what's happening, calm the fuck down and focus. Take some adderall, remember your audience and present a tight show.

tapandrollgames,
@tapandrollgames@mastodon.social avatar

@axiomnibus

I think Loading Ready Run and The Command Zone have created such a simple but effective production style that it's impossible for anyone else to live up to it. I like one of those two much better than the other -- mostly due to audience interaction and personality types -- but they both understand how to orchestrate a game while also clearly providing valuable information.

This article at TCGPlayer is sensationalistic in some of the "costs" ($3.00 for a bubble mailer? $1.25 for a pack of 2 at Dollar Tree.).

I also think it's far too optimistic of the ability to sell at Market Price. TCGPlayer 'Market Price' is VERY slow to adjust to spikes, and tends to oversell the permanence of price spikes when they occur.

On the other hand, it at least reinforces that your favorite seller probably isn't getting rich.

Here's the IGN article with the 24 new cards being released in the Scene Boxes, as well as previews of the "Poster" cards coming to the Special Edition Collector Boosters which are releasing at the same time.

I think some of the cards are powerful, but I'm very "meh" on the concept.

I'm not a big fan of constructed formats in Magic. Which is probably why I like the starter deck duels on Arena so much.They're fun, balanced, and I get to check off my dailies by doing them. Score!

tapandrollgames,
@tapandrollgames@mastodon.social avatar

@astrovore

Honestly, they're not awful in the lower reaches of ranked, either. Except for the first 3-5 days each month when everyone is re-climbing the ladder, you can usually use the starter decks to get to somewhere between Gold 4 and Gold 2 pretty easily.

tapandrollgames, to MagicTheGathering
@tapandrollgames@mastodon.social avatar

I think the "problem" a lot of people are running into drafting Wilds of Eldraine is falling into one of three distinct groups:

  1. Taking a bunch of creatures which are big or do stuff (but fail to include any means of protecting them).

  2. Taking a bunch of spells which improve board state (but fail to have any clear way to win the game).

  3. Taking Enchanting Tales cards which have cult followings (but don't work in limited).

tapandrollgames,
@tapandrollgames@mastodon.social avatar

And to be clear, these are problems which are faced by a lot of players during every set's draft cycle, but it seems to be even more pronounced this time.

If you're primary focus is to have fun, draft the goofy stuff and try to get there. When you do, it will be worth it.

However, if you're feeling frustrated by the number of losses you're racking up, it may be time to take a step back and start focusing more on synergies and recognizing which Adventures ACTUALLY provide added value.
