I think the Fediverse should grow up and stop throwing poo at Bluesky.

Fact: Its protocol has interesting ideas but is not fully designed yet and nobody knows if it can be made to scale well.
Fact: It attracts celebrities and demographics who’ve bounced off Mastodon.
Fact: I dunno what it’s gonna turn out to be and neither do you.

False: It’s a Jack-Dorsey-owned VC-funded crypto scam.

I think there are things to learn. But you have to stop shouting first.

I'm trying to build up some tent poles for the Magic: The Gathering community on Mastodon, as it seems like there is a lot of disconnect with people on different instances who may or may not be able to see each other.

5 reasons why Mastodon isn't growing quicker:

  1. Users who want 100% of their content to be curated, and complain every time they see something which they feel wasn't made specifically for them.

  2. Everyone wants to create a new instance for their own specific interest, rather than join an instance founded around a similar interest.

  3. Alt-text policing discourages image-sharing.

  4. Poor use of hashtags.

  5. Almost everything is a bot reposting from Twitter.

Alt text as the norm - total community enforcement

Replies - option to delist them so we don’t clog the feed

Timeline curating - we have near infinite timeline options with filters, lists, local, federated, hashtags etc

Muting - we can choose a time period!

Character count - 500 let’s you get an effing thought out

Ownership - we can own the damn thing ourselves

Alt-text is an absurd thing for people to waste their time complaining about. We live in a world where AI is being used for everything aside from what it should be used for. Complain about how image-to-text functionality isn't more widely available, and stop hassling innocent bystanders who have better things to do than write hundred-word essays about everything they share. The alt-text policing is a pathetic use of time.

Adding “” to your bio and registering your profile at https://fediverse.info/explore/people puts your profile in a directory to facilitate discovery based on shared interests.

Why is better than ...? 🤔

On Mastodon, there aren't millions of stans clamoring to reframe an embarrassingly public failure as an unmitigated success.

There is no Kool-Aid here. No one has been conned into worshipping some silver spoon oligarch.

Even more importantly, that oligarch doesn't get the opportunity to hide his obvious failure through the manipulation of "the algorithm". It's all laid bare, for all to see.
