My current tire pick for road fastfar and why.

Let's see how many Mastodon Posts I need for the bit of text I'd love would fit in one but doesn't. Even on Instagram I need the caption and one comment. But - that's only two at least and they are in one post :) So in any case: first the direct link to that source (where I also post much more than here anyways):

Hydration Vests. They are becoming more and more used. Not just in Gravel Races but also for Bikepacking.

I e.g. use a Camelbak Chase Vest since 2 or 3 years now (for long single day events but also for races like Badlands) and really like it.

Today Restrap added another option with it’s new Race Hydration Vest:

Looks like a real solid offering.

I’d really would like to do a test myself between the likes of USWE, Apidura, Camelbak, Evoc etc. Such a test could become crowded quick because some brands offer many variants from super minimalistic to complete daypack with a bladder compartment. I would focus on such vests like this Restrap: main focus hydration with added bikepacking features…

Revelate Designs showed a very interesting Aero Bar harness system for true aero (i.e. longitudinal) stowing of a (any) drybag at Sea Otter.

And with interesting expandable side (food) pouches.

As I found from the bikepackingcom reporting: https://bikepacking.com/plog/2024-sea-otter-finds-1/

Still in the works and expected to launch in Summer. I do really hope they reverse the system until then. Because having the closed fabric on top over the aero bars really would mess with many peoples configurations. Of bike computers, navigation devices, phone and light mounting and what have you.

I suggest they should have those single straps up top and the closed part down below the drybag - or come up with some other solution (maybe incorporate a hard mounting plate on top).

@mastobikes_de

Nr. 3: https://www.refuges.info/

tfrank_de,
@tfrank_de@mastodon.social avatar

Man sollte also beim Planen in beiden Suchen, wenn Bedarf besteht.

Super Interesting! Cane Creek unveiled it's new Gravel suspension fork, the "invert".

As the name suggests, it's an upside-down design.

And other as the marketing suggests, it's of course by far not the 1st gravel fork nor is it even the 1st gravel suspension fork. From June on, there will be 2 versions. 1 with 30 and 1 with 40 mm travel.

I welcome the addition and hope more variants from other brands will follow.

So it omits the damper to arrive at it's weight (just below and just above 1 kg). So I wonder how it rides. According to @angryasian they say they also tested versions with dampers and their testers couldn't tell the difference.... weeeeeeell - maybe that is true, maybe they just had uninformed testers or maybe a very restricted testing protocol... remains to be seen. But James found it quite ok so far --> https://escapecollective.com/cane-creek-invert-first-ride-review/

@pete

Indeed, would agree on both aspects. The one that yes - with so little travel one might get away with no damper (which is precisely why e.g. the Lauf Forks are limited at 30 mm travel). On the other hand - many people even don't like those because they aren't damped... so - your milage may vary.

And also yes: 30 and even 40 mm is still too little to make a fuzz about. I understand it's a needed stepping stone for buyers and makers alike but what's really needed is more.

See - that's how the internet works. You post links or point towards sources. Sometimes they are your own, sometimes they are of others. :)

Interestingly enough: on most frames on the product pages there is no "stealth dropout" to see. On some not even the storage thing in the down tube. Why is that?

2.) Given the very short rear end and 40 mm tire clearance... as well as the "Roadmachine X" line all coming as 1x specced: could a buyer max out 40 mm and still have a FD (so run it 2x)? I wonder.

@mastobikes

tfrank_de,
@tfrank_de@mastodon.social avatar

@carlosfroh @mastobikes

It's one frame but 2 different spec lines. "X" is simply other colors, their own redshift sports shock stop stem licensed ICS stem and 1x groups.

Of course - makers and buyers still have to find each other. So labels and categories still make sense. So what is a road bike, what is an allroad bike? And what is a Gravelbike, a Race Gravel bike and an Adventure Gravel bike? These all are moving targets, as I regularly and quite currently in my latest Gravel Bike Tech and Trend Report 2024 article write about. Find it here: https://wp.me/p2p0yf-3lq (Article in German)

So BMC has a new Road Machine. Their road endurance model. And... it boasts 40 mm tire clearance! All the while having just 415 mm chain stays - so an absolute agile road geometry number. Sounds cool. And highlights the fact that "endurance and all-road is dead", everything is Gravel now. Which is fine by me, since Gravel is sooo wide a field that you have to look what "you" want and need and then select a bike and don't care how it's labeled.

That's really sad news! No "German Mini Sea Otter", i.e. no GravelGames Expo this year! 😢

Bike-X has a bit more info and it's as expected the bike industry is really struggling with money...

Looking for a lunch break read?

What you might want to consider when looking at new Gravelbikes like Rose Backroad FF, Canyon Grail v2, BMC Kaius, Fara F/Gravel, Enve MOG and more. Their geometry, aero bags, integrated cockpits…

And what I would like bike designers and product owners to know and consider…

(written in German):

New Cannondale Scalpel prompted this:

It’s not about leading the cables through the headset no matter what!

It’s about having a tidy front and no mess of exposed cables! For aero, to reduce interference with bags, for aesthetics.

Now look at this, mtb industry and Cannondale and think again!
