California is simply unable to send unemployment benefits to people with long addresses. They have an artificial cap on an address of 25 characters.

They cant do anything about it except tell you to go buy a PO Box, then file an appeal.

My apartment having a long Unit number really fucked me.

@NBAnthony2k What the fuck. I thought it was bad when my utility company refused to accept payment from bank accounts with more than 16 characters. That's absolutely garbage the same state that authorizes street names like "North Lower Sacramento Road" has such arbitrary limits.

@NBAnthony2k No I'm sure whatever developer wrote that code back in the 60s was like "my address is 104 1st St, multiplying that length by 2.5 should be a good enough buffer for any address in the state" and then made the column that size and nobody has been allowed to touch it since.

@Neblib Ew that's gross. I've noticed that some places never connect businesses to adjacent shared use paths and other places connect to as many businesses as possible.

I've been thinking more about that thread I reblogged earlier from that North Carolingian politician about promoting exporting peanut hay. She framed it as having peanut hay replacing alfalfa, and she spends the thread talking about how important boosting the product's mindshare will be. And it's true that that is very important if she wants to grow that industry. But she never talked about whether or not its possible for southern peanuts to be cheaper than western alfalfa. Cost is a big deal.

    @archliberal I've also been strongly considering switching to Tumbleweed. My Arch system got messed up with the GRUB fiasco earlier this year, and rather than painstakingly fix it, I want to wipe everything and start fresh on Tumbleweed.

    I nearly got heated by Thread's privacy policy having language that says that unless your instance defederates from them they will use your content to sell you ads on their other platforms (if they can figure out your identity), but then I remembered that they could already scrape that data if they wanted. Mastodon is part of the open Internet after all.

    The UDOT study on transit at Point of the Mountain reads like it was written by clowns. They seriously considered grade-separated DMUs, didn't consider grade-separated EMUs, but did consider (and preferred) street-running EMUs. They refused to consider sending the light rail directly to an existing regional rail station 4000 feet from the main alignment just so they could throw pork at an MLM.

    Wendover did a video on the MBTA and made a comment about how Mayor Koch doesn't care about the subway despite being on the board. Fun anecdote about that, for most of the last year the line between Boston and Quincy had so many speed restrictions that what normally took less than 7 min was taking more than 17. It was the talk of the city. When the restrictions were finally cleared, a paper asked the mayor his thoughts, and he said he wasn't aware of the issue and it likely wasn't a big deal.

    @NBAnthony2k One thing he didn't bring up but I think would have driven his point about the feedback between unsafety and lack of ridership even further was that the FTA caught the MBTA running their dispatchers 22 hours at a time and after being told that that was highly illegal and unsafe the MBTA halved service in the summer of 2022. They still haven't brought it back to how it once was and instead headways are getting even worse.

    @CityNerd's video this week on "Cities with the lowest "Housing plus Transportation" costs is pretty interesting, and you will never guess the top cities.

    It really says a lot that the top cities on the list got there by making housing so crazy unaffordable that poor people literally cannot live there and all thats left are super high income earners driving up the median income.

    The I-195 shutdown in Providence shows what great lengths Americans will go to in order to avoid using a bicycle. They will literally sit in traffic for hours and cancel school instead of going for a 20 minute bike ride on a path that's largely separated from cars.

    @Legit_Spaghetti @MrHandyMan It'd make sense for that to be the case. If there's one thing a megacorp like Meta will handle very carefully, it's distributed moderation. I imagine they'll only allow Threads users to see posts from other servers after they've gone through a spam filter and that they're still working on that.

    The progression of this intersection over the years is funny/sad. At first there was absolutely no pedestrian accommodation. Then they built a decorative sidewalk on one side. Then they said fuck it and completely grade separated the pedestrians.

    1. A state has control of party primary elections
    2. Joe Biden protests by not running in that state
    3. Hundreds of thousands of write-in ballots are expected
    4. Write-in ballots can't be machine counted
    5. State is scrambling to find loads of unpaid labor to count ballots
