An AR-15 is completely inappropriate at effectively handling 30-40 Hot Dog Vendors.

Only pickles, relish, mustard, and hot peppers can.

Would you support a Pirate Party?

@Mike_the_Cleric I would if we had a proportional representation system.

I am mostly in the camp of big tent Liberal parties, but I would absolutely support individual feminist party, NAACP, or Pirate party, etc. candidates if we didn’t have first past the post. Pirates are good at their narrow scope of open source and internet rights which is why I tend to lean towards big tent with coalitions of different experts and policy wonks.

So Fox News, using info from the Tax Foundation, are claiming that when the Trump Tax cuts end that now households will be having an onerous tax burden at a time that households are struggling to meet ends with rising costs.

Now, it is true that the tax cuts will raise all rates above the first bracket but the Tax Foundation’s numbers don’t add up.

They claim that getting rid of the tax cuts will over complicate things but their own calculator is different!

I’m looking at 2 examples here

1/4

archliberal,
@archliberal@mastodo.neoliber.al avatar

So a single filer, making 30k with no children the Tax Foundation says that they would have a $253.75 increase to their tax burden. But doing a “custom” tax situation with their calculator and putting in the same details (single 30k no kids standard deduction) I get an increase in taxes by $332.75. Doing the math myself I get a tax burden increase of $114.00.

So their bracket goes from 12% to 15% but none of these numbers line up. The Tax Foundation clearly is manipulating something.

2/4

archliberal,
@archliberal@mastodo.neoliber.al avatar

The next example I am going over is, family filing jointly making 165k with 2 children. Tax Foundation says after the tax cuts expire they would owe $2450.50 more. A “custom” tax situation with their calculator and putting in the same details again I get an increase in taxes by $5541.50. Doing the math myself I get a tax burden increase of $4259.94 (without factoring the child tax credit to boot!).

3/4

archliberal,
@archliberal@mastodo.neoliber.al avatar

In the 30k scenario, if they are paid bi-weekly that is ~$10 a paycheck using the Tax Foundation’s reported numbers, ~$13 with their calculator, and <$5 with my math.

It’s still an increase but even in the worst case scenario that isn’t onerous.

In the 165k scenario, in their bi-weekly paychecks they would see ~$95, ~$214, or ~$164 more respectively. Now this is much more but how much do you want to bet the Tax Foundation has an article complaining about the deficit?

4/4

archliberal,
@archliberal@mastodo.neoliber.al avatar

@NBAnthony2k FDR started the Federal income tax specifically to help not only pay for all the new federal programs but also to combat inflation. One cause of inflation is too much money and not enough goods. Taxing people is one way to reduce all that cash sloshing around.

It’s hard to take conservative deficit hawks seriously when they are so pro-tax cut.

> More water would have put out this house fire.

> Well we threw like 5 buckets of water (had to go to the store to buy them!) and the fire still didn’t go out! In fact it’s getting worst! Water is not the solution. We have plenty of water.

What discussing the housing crisis on the internet feels like.

I finally finished my initial pack of German made Van Der Hagen safety razors and instead of just buying another pack of one kind I got a huge multipack of many brands. Going to start with a 5 pack of Egyptian made Shark Super Stainless Blades tomorrow. The Van Der Hagens have been pretty great, long lasting (its taken me months to go through a 5 pack), and easy to use, and are easy to find in the midwest.It'll be interesting to see how they compare.

archliberal,
@archliberal@mastodo.neoliber.al avatar

@Neblib hell yeah. I used the Van Der Hagens since finding out that Gillette Platinums were all from Russia (lots of razor blades are actually). I currently am using Feather blades from Japan. They are quite sharp and keep that edge pretty well. I go through about a blade a week but some brands I could essentially only use once or twice before they got dull.

Hat tip to @GreenFire

A couple days after this Bad Hillary Tweet went viral on progressive Twitter, the Biden Admin and the EPA announced their new CO2 rules for the power sector, regulating the ability of coal fired power plants to EXIST ANYMORE.

Project 2025 is the Republican agenda to not only dismantle American democracy to make the President all powerful but also eliminate all regulations, the Federal agencies, and the progress programs like the IRA and Bi-partisan infrastructure bill set out to accomplish. They straight up will reverse this plan to shutdown the coal plants and get rid of funding for solar and wind. We have to stop Republicans.

The local (national chain) coffee shop got a beer and wine license this month, and I'm interested to see what they do with it. I'd totally go over there for an evening beer if the prices are reasonable. One of my favorite coffee shops (sadly lost during 2020) did cocktails and live music in the evenings that was a lot of fun.

Rebel moon is a disaster. someone needs to do Snyder a favor and take away his writing pen.

Which pains me to say because I think Snyder’s flair as a director (shallow as it is) has lent to the greatest scenes in comic book movies. His dc films are uneven but the scenes where they hit are my favorites that make me want to keep watching superhero flicks.

The watchmen intro, dr manhattans monologue, the 300 shield wall, steppenwulf destroying the Amazonians etc etc.

But my god the writing.

archliberal,
@archliberal@mastodo.neoliber.al avatar

@Bigtallguy he would make a top tier director of photography/cinematographer.

Should not be allowed to write movies.

There are 4 more Rebel Moon movies in the pipeline. Netflix has to cut him off.

What is the best way to commission art? I want like a logo or banner type thing for setting up a blog. You know something basic but much better than I can draw.

First and foremost though I’ll need to save up some money. This kind of thing I absolutely understand could be a few hundred bucks.

It's becoming hard for me to say the doomers about Trump are entirely wrong.

Damn near 50% of the nation supports a man who will purge the government, put visibly queer people into camps, put people into camps for being brown near the border, who happily will use violence to get his way...

This isn't a Trump problem. This is an Us problem, and the longer it stays an Us problem the more credibly I consider emigrating.

archliberal,
@archliberal@mastodo.neoliber.al avatar

@Slyence so much has to be reformed to make this country better but to do so, we have to sit across the table with people who want to destroy everything that makes this country great and replace it with something that could be as worst as some of the darkest periods in our history.

It’s going to take a long time to get through to these people. I don’t blame you for thinking leaving will be the easiest option. But I do agree we have a long time to go before this over.

For whatever reason this is the greatest joke I have heard all week. Bonus points is that the sshrimp agent needs to connect to the sshrimp certificate signing service called “barby” so you have to serve your shrimp on the barby.

From this wonderful talk on ssh certificates:
