Whether or not disc brakes are “better” than rim brakes, disc brakes definitely require less skill to use effectively in more conditions.

From this post by Not Just Bikes:

I’ve been on Bluesky for less than 48 hours and my feed is already way more useful than on Mastodon, despite following only a couple of people.

I really don’t understand Mastodon’s aversion to discovery algorithms. Algorithms aren’t inherently evil, and I would argue that they’re necessary for social media to function.

The odds of me staying here are pretty slim when it’s almost impossible for people to find my stuff, and for me to discover new people, without doing a bunch of manual work.

I have to do a quote share because I can’t grab the original post here.

Has anyone tried to run #GNUSocial in #Docker recently? I followed these steps, by the way.

Aside from an error complaining that vendor/autoload.php is missing, I was getting this logging constantly when running docker compose up:

gnu-social-worker-1 | Fatal error: Uncaught LogicException: You need to add "symfony/framework-bundle" as a Composer dependency. in /var/www/social/bin/console:18

Got the K&N air filter in even though we couldn’t for the life of us get the Corbin saddle off. It took a ton of work, but we managed to get the tank off without also taking off the saddle. :blobfoxgoogly:

Rising Costs Mean Food Companies Are Making Snacks, Sodas Taste Worse

But the Coke didn’t taste as good as it used to — and it left a weird aftertaste. I thought there might be something wrong with the can, or perhaps my rosy childhood memories clouded my judgment. But as I indulged my urge, I found the same thing. Even Coke-drinking friends I spoke to agreed: The taste had changed.

It wasn’t just Coke; other foods from my childhood taste different now. The Dairy Milk chocolate bars I used to enjoy after school aren’t as creamy and taste too sweet. Lay’s potato chips don’t pack the same flavor punch they used to. A stroll through Reddit shows I’m not alone: Thousands of people have noticed the quality of their favorite snacks getting worse.

“Ritz crackers. For some inexplicable reason, maybe around 5 years ago the crackers went from being nice and firm and dippable to nowadays easily crumbling to bits with even the lightest dip,” one user complained a few years ago.

“You could bite into a Twix and feel your teeth travel through a heavy layer of caramel,” another Redditor lamented, adding, “Now they snap in half and taste like a sugar cookie with some chocolate on it.”

“Breyers used to be the best for store-bought ice-cream, but now it’s just a crappy mess,” a third said.

People aren’t imagining these changes — manufacturers are quietly modifying their recipes to save money and maintain their profit margins. The phenomenon, which has been called “skimpflation” and “flavorflation,” is a way to hide the impact of inflation and avoid passing higher costs on to the consumer. But by replacing expensive ingredients with cheaper ones, companies are also making food less tasty, less healthy, and less satisfying.

Stopped by my local dealer to test ride a today. Not only was the engine super easy to work with, the ergonomics were great for the street! The riding position was somewhat sporty without being too committed. (1, 2, 3)

In a minor quandary here. I want lower clip-ons/handlebars on my Ninja 1000SX so I can engage my core more (the pegs are don't need to be moved), but the shop I talked to said that there aren't many options for doing so because the bars can't be lowered much before hitting the bike's gas tank.

I don't want to trade it for a different one, though, because that would involve a lot of financial mess and I'd have to get new luggage racks so my top and side cases would fit on whatever bike I'd end up with.

Maybe I should get a compact pickup as my first stick shift . It'd be very useful for cargo carrying (motorcycle, bicycle, etc. stuff), and passenger capacity wouldn't matter since it we already have a car for that.

I also originally learned to drive in a compact pickup back in the day.

Unreal Tournament 2004 20 Years Later: An LGR Retrospective

Revisiting UT2004 two decades later! This sequel to UT99 (er, UT2003?) from Epic Games and Digital Extremes was a staple of PC gaming in the 2000s, with the bombastic Onslaught mode being added to the classics of deathmatch, capture the flag, and so on. So let’s review this classic FPS and dive into its predecessor, its gameplay, multiplayer, mods and more!

New problem: I keep getting Invalid value for option 'sql_username': ejabberd with the below configuration. I’ve also tried having the sql_* options at the top level rather than under host_config, but I don’t see any difference in behavior. I’m using version 18.12.1 with erlang-p1-pgsql 1.1.6.

host_config:
    <a href="http://msg.kawa-kun.com" rel="ugc">msg.kawa-kun.com</a>:
      sql_type: pgsql
      sql_server: 'localhost'
      sql_database: 'ejabberd'
      sql_username: 'ejabberd'
      sql_password: <REDACTED>

I still like rim brakes, but I don't have any major opposition to disc brakes as long as they're using with thru-axles. (I don't like the pads rubbing after hard braking, which is usually caused by the hubs shifting.)
