Great news for anyone working with the Perseverance raw images!
A longstanding issue was recently fixed that applied a linear stretch to the public raw images.
This made it nearly impossible to work with the tiled Navcam images.
Comparison between Sol 501 and 770.

There is more detail in the middle, through the cloud, than I thought there would be. Very nice tonal balance, too.

Me: Happy with my Mavic 2 Pro
DJI: Drops Mavic 3 Pro specs

Actually pretty exciting specs all around, although I'm both happy with and getting the results I need from my Mavic 2.

But if I upgrade to a new drone it'll probably be an American-made model due to the always-looming threats to limit or ban Chinese-made tech. Not to mention the current restrictions on using DJI drones for certain federal contracts.

Since I don't do video or shoot in low light situations, I don't feel any urge to upgrade from my M2P to an M3P.

I find the 28mm equivalent lens on my current drone sometimes too wide now, and any shot that needs more coverage is easily handled by a panorama anyway.

The improved object avoidance might be nice, but I haven't hit anything yet!

SuperCam is taking a close look at this very shiny, white pebble at the new rover location.

It looks like a possible single laser strike at the centre of the image, in the regolith.

That's the best photo from Ingenuity so far, no question!

And there's Belva's bottom, too - a bit wrinkly but not bad for an old crater! -)

I'm wondering why, starting 5 sols ago, SuperCam images appear to have been underexposed by 2 stops, relative to previous exposures.

Could this be a re-calibration to gain better detail in the shadows? Or is there some other reason? 🤔

Here is an unadjusted image, followed by the same frame after processing, plus two other images taken in the same sequence:

Sol 772, LMST: 10:56:40++
Credits in the alt text.

The same image, after adjustment. A single laser strike in the centre has cleared away the surface dust.
Second image in a sequence; SuperCam is panning from right to left.
Third image in the sequence.

is presently experiencing some of the coldest sols since last October, with max avg abt -25°C through the week but reaching as low as -28°C max during daylight on some sols.

The animation shows a few of the last flights of the . It's notable that all those flights occurred during max temperatures around -20°C, which might explain why has most probably not taken place yet. 's weather feed updates lag by a few sols

I wonder how much the change in altitude affects the daytime temperature there. 🤔

I expect that climate patterns on Mars are just as complex as here on Earth, only different.

The rocks in the rover's workspace should be worth at least an abrasion, I'd think. But IANAG™*.

And look - we can see Belva's bottom! 😃

Anyone reading Kim Stanley Robinson's "Mars Trilogy" or any part of it quickly realizes that while the novels are full of technical details, there are very few maps and those that exist are very coarse.

Here are some maps I made while reading the books several years ago, showing cities, places and plot info. The background is a USGS Topographical Map from Wikipedia: https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/4/48/USGS-PlanetMars-TopographicalMap.png

Corrections and new locations will be posted to this thread.

I want to re-read the trilogy with the aid of your maps - someday! I have a stack of waiting books, though. Too many books, too little time! 📖 📖 👓

IMO, as long as the technical details are at least plausible if not accurate, then literary license applies and the reader should be willing to overlook them. 🙂
