Another look at Jupiter’s moon Io with decorrelated colors and boosted to show the dark jupitershine on the right. A lot of credit goes to the JunoCam team for recovering the camera from apparent severe radiation damage that ruined much of the last perijove images. Expect a lot of cool science to come out of this pass and the next one in February!

Amazing new images of the moon Io have come down from the Juno spacecraft! This one shows the volcanic moon of Jupiter from only 2,800 kilometers away, which is the closest look we’ve gotten of Io since the Galileo orbiter over 20 years ago. Check out all those volcanoes!!!!

kevinmgill,

@tio It was taken this morning by Juno. source is here: https://www.missionjuno.swri.edu/junocam/processing/. I have run it though my processing pipeline.

Latest commit to Mars Raw Utils makes use of the 'async fn' addition in Rust version 1.75.0 ( https://blog.rust-lang.org/2023/12/28/Rust-1.75.0.html ). Make sure you update Rust ( rustup update stable ) before building from source.

The clouds of Saturn using visual spectrum (RGB) data taken by Cassini in August 2007. I processed it with contrast, dehazing, and color enhancements to reveal the structure and details of the clouds. To the right you’ll see the shadows cast from the planetary rings. Rotated such that North is to the right.

The weather in Jezero, Mars, according to the instrument aboard .

Report Sol: 1002

Temperature ranges in the past 6 sols:
Highs: -12.6 to -5.3°C
Lows: -74.2 to -73°C

The highest observed temperature in Jezero Crater this Martian year, -5.3°C, was reached on Sol 999.

Min atmospheric density reached so far this year, was on Sol 997: 0.012058 kg/m3, still higher than the record low of 0.01176 kg/m3 on Sol 313.

kevinmgill,

@65dBnoise This is interesting. Are you pulling this data from the web api or from PDS?

kevinmgill,

@65dBnoise Nice. I was curious since the Perseverance api only gives the last few sols unlike for MSL which dumps out the entire mission

kevinmgill,

@moondog548 Yup, 1000 Martian days for the rover. Each sol is just under 24 hr 40 min

Looking at this last release of Juno, I’m wondering if everything is okay with its camera.

https://www.missionjuno.swri.edu/junocam/processing?source=junocam

No official comment yet from NASA, but seeing these images, I’m a little bit surprised. Perhaps some kind of experiment related to this Perijove?

Hopefully, everything is nominal and ready for the upcoming flyby of Io! 🤔

kevinmgill,

@andrealuck The camera electronics seem to finally succumbing to the harsh radiation environment and showing as a huge increase in dark bias noise. Currently being discussed over on UMSF, tho nothing official has come out yet.

kevinmgill,

This was so amazing to watch. A male gorilla sitting at the glass and watching as a man held up his phone. The gorilla would inspect each photo with a curiosity and interest we often only reserve for our own species.

During the coming solar conjunction of Mars, and the moratorium in communications, will use its color camera to study the movement of sand, which poses an ever-present challenge to Mars missions.

The moratorium will last from Nov 11 to 25. More about what the spacecrafts will do on Mars during this time, here:

kevinmgill,

@65dBnoise @stim3on Note that all the CAHVOR code has been open sourced as part of VICAR/VISOR: https://github.com/NASA-AMMOS/VICAR/

kevinmgill,

@stim3on @65dBnoise That Python code looks good. The VISOR code is a good reference for how cahvore rays are projected onto surfaces for mosaicking and photogrammetry. I wish I had enough time to port all that to Rust (or at least set up the C->Rust bindings)
