Marveling at the world

Lots of Martian rocks and landscapes, some looking all too familiar, but don't be fooled by that: Mars is an inhospitable toxic planet. Let's not mistake fiction for reality.

I like dirt and rocks, but I Am Not A Geologist (IANAG).

Sure, Biden is much better than the worst POTUS ever, Trump, but Big Oil are making "record profits":

Chris Heyes:
"[…] if I'm not mistaken we're pumping more oil and gas than any country in history ever and [Big Oil] are making record profits, right?

Lisa Friedman:
[…] You know, you're absolutely right. The Biden Administration is overseeing record oil and gas production […] and they're not eager to tout that"

Does not crashing the US economy equal Big Oil making record profits? It wasn't so some decades ago, still under the same system.

Worse than Biden's unwillingness to do something about limiting record Big Oil profits and oil production is that many people feel politically hopeless and that actual change is impossible. That's really depressing.

Ιnstead of having an "understanding" for the extreme greed of the oligarchy, it's healthier to call it out.

@argv_minus_one
No one asks to shut down the oil industry right now. I was talking about limiting record high Big Oil profits. Reasonable profits for the oligarchy doesn't mean depression, it means delivering for the majority of the people, while saving the environment and their children's lives. The time is past.

As I said, worse than the government doing nothing is people conditioned to believe that change is impossible, and that any effort to make things better is futile. A vicious circle.

This is Bright Angel, a light colored rock formation in the ancient Neretva Vallis riverbed; the next scientific target for .

Looking at all those loose rocks on the steep slope above it, it's good that the geologically interesting parts are (I guess) those farthest from them.

Yet another rework of my speculative routes for #Perseverance to reach Bright Angel. This one shows two much faster routes (green) to the riverbed, passing through a few regolith ripples, but leading to a mostly flat and rock-free terrain.

The green route seems preferable to me (but IANAG), provided there are no scientifically interesting locations along the the south bank, which the rover has been traversing for a number of sols now (white dashed line).

The movement has gained traction lately. It's only a mater of time for all horizons to be straight again 🤪

Seriously, I can't see the point for spending so much time to get colors right, and then neglect lens distortions and rotation of the frame, as if tile would somehow be natural, just to have a rectangular frame. It makes no sense.

65dBnoise,
@65dBnoise@mastodon.social avatar

@sharponlooker
Actually it would be one-of-a-kind for a selfie, provided those assembling the mosaic would take the gravity vector (a.k.a. straight horizon) into consideration. 🙄

And that includes #NASA

That Curiosity selfie was at an 8° tilt. If Perseverance took a selfie while descending Neretva Valis, that is within the next two - three sols, then that would have a much greater tilt.

New location for #Perseverance on Sol 1144, RMC 52.1950.

This may be the last location visible by #Ingenuity's RTE camera, as the rover has now reached the theoretical limit of its field-of-view (cyan line). The #MarsHelicopter has been programmed to capture one RTE image every sol for as long as it is able to wake up every sol perform its routine of gathering environmental and system data, as a stationary testbed.

Now we wait for the Perseverance team to downlink those images from Ingenuity.

However, it is unknown when NASA will try to retrieve images from the Mars Helicopter. Maybe people who still have an account on X, where NASA has an official presence, could ask them to do that?

Defeated in a devastating war with China and ravaged by climate change, America is on the brink of a bloody civil war. 🧵 It feels inappropriate to argue on such matters on a Day of Remembrance, but since such a day became a stage for distorting truth and the essence of the , it seems necessary to do so.

In his speech Biden drew a parallel, comparing murdering 6000000 during the Holocaust to ' 1200 Israeli victims during the Oct 7 attack. That was a x5000 stretch of truth and logic, without counting the 35000+ victims of horrible thirty-eyes-for-an-eye retaliation,

💯 the US has no moral authority to lecture anyone indeed (Indigenous North Americans, Central and South Americans, Vietnamese, etc have all been victims of morally unjustified US war acts/interventions).

But morality is a tool useful only to/on those who truly share the same values or who are forced to give an account for them to someone, and in any case, not a good analytical one.
