There's an entire thing on TikTok at the moment about Americans don't realise that you can just eat fruit off trees, and also a backlash against non-Americans laughing at them for having no geography knowledge and I'm just like...

How does one bring a jerry can of amp-hours to a stranded EV?

trib,
@trib@aus.social avatar

@nathanaelcbr you just know some under-prepared person trying to cross the Simpson is going to need this.
EV 4WD trekkers are going to need to carry significant solar setups for just this purpose.

trib,
@trib@aus.social avatar

@nathanaelcbr essentially, one of these will need to become standard kit for EV 4WD trekking. It won't be wasted carry, because it's also useable in camp.

Shouldn't we be celebrating the return of those economic metric to pre-pandemic levels?! Oh wait.

Anyway if you want a business owner only perspective on shoplifting crack on and read this.

trib,
@trib@aus.social avatar

@geordie @jpm @ausfestivus @danilic and here am I, a once-a-week shaver because I have very fine, pointless hair, loving this advice and camaraderie, but knowing that most of it is lost on me.

I will offer that I do follow a regime like Geordie suggests, but rather less often than some.

If you are a safety razor user, I highly recommend Dollar Shave Club gear. And for a soap and deodorant, you can't go past Dr. Squatch for good smelling scents.

Living out here in the sticks, and working with tools and animals most days, you need stuff that gets the stink off on days when you need 2-3 showers but doesn't shred your skin.

With a long house of multiple buildings (hooray for rural builds over many years), mesh wifi just manages, and often enough, introduces weirdness and signal weakness in the ends.
For my partner, who works a busy job from home, connectivity can be fraught some days and she has to fall back to phone tethering. That's not a sustainable solution.
The attached image shows how our network is set up. It's increasingly apparent that running some network cable through parts of the house would be beneficial, but I fear it will be prohibitively expensive because of the weird construction.
Can any of my wifi/networking nerd friends here offer some advice? More mesh, or definitely look into cabling?
As I see it, cables would need to run from the office where the satellite connection comes in, to Building 3 where a wifi point/router could be connected, and into Building 2 upstairs where connectivity is not so important but where several smart lights and a couple of other devices are.

@jpm? Who else?

trib,
@trib@aus.social avatar

@jpm This is the good advice I expected. I'm going to try some ethernet over power and see if I can get suitable improvement. Even if it's only temporary, before doing cable, it'll be a low cost.

Moving the router is a no go. The cable from the satellite dish comes through the wall in my office. So, that's out.

We have a good electrical contractor we've used in the past, so I reckon I'll get them to quote on some runs. It's mostly wall plates and cable right? Nothing exceptional in the office where the connection comes in?

Optimisation? Yes, I'm up for that.

(I do realise it's a workday for you and I'm just some idiot on the internet. An answer when you have time is more than appreciated.)

trib,
@trib@aus.social avatar

@jpm I ordered one of these earlier - https://www.tp-link.com/au/home-networking/powerline/tl-pa8033p-kit/

Even if it's only "goodish", it'll mean I have wired backhaul of sorts to the room where the PS5 and TV are.

I already have a couple of TP-Link's smart plug adapters, and they are pretty useful. Minimising extra providers in my setup is a key.

trib,
@trib@aus.social avatar

@jpm our sparky does all the things. They seem to be the most competent in the Bega Valley.

trib,
@trib@aus.social avatar

@jpm nearest anything is Betta. Who are good, but don't carry that thing. So ordered online.

Oddly, the nearest Officeworks is Canberra. And the nearest Bunnings (as an aside) is Batemans Bay.

Mitre10, and specialist rural suppliers have the market here on hardware, and electrical is mostly small suppliers, too.

@jpm there is a HN at Tura Beach. It's about the size of your average fish and chip shop.

Pretty sure every "sex ed" class in America should spend a significant amount of time on the numerous issues surrounding child #birth. While I certainly acknowledge the malign influence of male power #politics on the abortion debate, I think at the same time most men are woefully under-educated on just how fraught and complicated the world of bearing a #child can be. Ignorance leads to black and white thinking in a realm composed of a 1000 shades of gray. Without understanding, there can be little empathy.

    @decryption @rockyd goog, or googy is definitely Australian (perhaps UK too) slang for an egg. I distinctly recall my grandparents using "googy egg" as a term.

    The derogatory term for Aisan people (heard more than enough thanks to Vietnam veterans in my family) usually ends in a "k".
