Something I'm happy to see: The Affinity suite apps are the first "mainstream" design apps which support Variable Color Fonts.

Was already waiting for this, as they went the Colr color font route instead of SVG, and variable font support was always on the horizon.

This will make sketching specimens quite a bit easier!

typearture,
@typearture@typo.social avatar

@aoe Thank you! Atlas is doing some really heavy lifting with that crossbar.

typearture,
@typearture@typo.social avatar

@justvanrossum Sadly not yet, it currently flips to the black/white fallback.

I do note that the "type selector preview" shows it in color, but that's probably the SVG being read (as even my Font Explorer is showing it in color, and now way that's supporting Colrv1).

Would also love the ability to choose color palettes (or override them).

typearture,
@typearture@typo.social avatar

@eWalthert Yep, and back when I first started using it on the side, the main answer to "can we have variable fonts?" Was "that's not our priority".

So pretty happy, although use is still a bit limited without color customisation/palette swaps.

I geo-tagged around 200 works of art to create my Backdrop game. You only have to work out the location of 5 paintings to beat the game.

typearture,
@typearture@typo.social avatar

@mapsmania @woowoowoo Really nice and fun game! With some real challenges (So many random castles around the world!)

But yeah, I really think you need the names, otherwise slightly more abstract/interchangeable paintings can be quite hard to locate.

About the location a giveaway: The scoring system is quite precise (even if you guess the correct city, you still need to find the right spot to make it correct!).

Working on some fun for Gimme! I'm dreading the color layers required to make the stacking work, so I'm just messing around in Illustrator. But it adds a nice flavour to the thin capitals!

So how many options should there be? Left, Right, Top, Bottom? And how many layers? 3? More than 3?

Originally unintended, but the directions fit pretty well with the Cardinal directions used in the Mahjong game. Talk about going full circle!

typearture, to random
@typearture@typo.social avatar

The biggest addition last Gimme update was the full redraw of Mechatron.

When I released v1, I was quite happy: I made a variable robot font! But over the years it became the most tricky to use family of Gimme: The lettershapes were hard to read and flawed, and the family was difficult to use for design.

So I started from scratch, removing what didn't work and going down the road of "endlessly adding more layers". And it did pay off!

And I'm even skipping to talk about the new lower case!

Another big change in Gimme v0.11 comes in the shape of Lowball, the playing card font. How do you make it usable? (as far as Playing card fonts go).

Toning down the contrast, making the lettershapes smoother and a clearer distinction between letters is a good start!

But the biggest change was under the hood, as the working files now use fully editable, masked cards. Which open plenty of possibilities for customisation! When will the first collector card company come knocking?

typearture, to random
@typearture@typo.social avatar

As Gimme gets another update today (and a total file size of 340 MB). I thought it would be nice to look back and see how the sperate font families have been able to grow through the @futurefonts platform.

From the start Froebel has been a nice experiment, but colours without internal contrast makes it really hard to use a color font! So every version added more detail, fuelling the constant battle between "letter" and "toy". Between "form" and "readability".

It's almost like type design!

I feel like the most “millennial” thing I do is waiting to make any big purchases “on the big screen” i.e. small purchases are ok on the phone but if it’s a big purchase I prefer to do it on the computer for some reason, as if the bigger the screen the more secure it is or something. Anyone else? I feel like this is something I would get teased for if I had any Gen Z in my life.

typearture,
@typearture@typo.social avatar

@colinmford I have the same thing, but just because I have a lower transaction limit set on my phone.

And I don't think it's that weird: The phone UI is always compromised, you might miss things, need endless scrolling to get to the checkout, or the checkout isn't clear. So on.

It’s becoming a HEX tradition to publish new work on Groundhog Day. 🦫

This year I’m happy to update the Forester typeface to version 0.2, which extends the character support for wider coverage of diacritics, punctuation, currency symbols, etc.

It’s available now via @futurefonts:

@MatthijsSluiter @HEX @futurefonts It's such a shame music videos are things of the past. Even if the music is not your taste, you can always enjoy a Gondry video. Almost all his videos are gems with twists, turns and fresh takes on the medium.

Oooh look! A font that emulates those diner menu stick-on letters, and uses color font tech for the bevel. Pretty dang neat!

If you're in the Font Of The Month Club, check your inbox, or mosey on over to https://djr.com/font-of-the-month-club and sign up! By @djrrb of course.

typearture,
@typearture@typo.social avatar

@pixelambacht @djrrb The best way to end and start a month. And Chunky bevels are the best! Perhaps in the future a variable? :D

typearture,
@typearture@typo.social avatar

@pixelambacht @djrrb Sounds like an excellent idea! Perhaps slight chipping can be added as well? One part of the /T crossbar always seems to go!

typearture,
@typearture@typo.social avatar

@djrrb @pixelambacht The "damage" distress is something I won't advise, I tried that with my chocolate letter, in the end it was just a bit dull (and hell to implement, even with chunky shadows).

I really like the vertical shift in image 2, but it's something designers (who will most commonly use these options) can already do manually. But Shadows aligning with flipping is something you can't do, so I see more value in the style of image 1!

Chrome 121 released an update enabling the ability to animate the font-palette property with your Color Fonts. So here is a demo and article!

The ClockPix clock by @vasilis is close to my heart. A collection of photos of clocks in the real world. By showing a photo at the time depicted on the clock, old, dated pixels are placed in a new current context and for a brief moment it is relevant again. Check it out: vasilis.nl/clocks/pix-clock/

Working during the holidays! But when waiting for the client mails to get back, I'm still finding some space to work on the things you wished you got for Christmas back in the day....

Masher needs outlines for it's future versions: For support of different controller types and easier use with different backgrounds. But what feels right?

Option 1 is nice and chunky, but perhaps too thick? Or is 2 still just too feeble? Decisions, Decisions!

Telecarb's lowercases have alternate capitals based on quirks from bead/glyph manufacturing. It also has upside-down replacements that bracelet makers use when they ran out of certain character beads.

This morning I got the sad message that our dear friend Jan Middendorp passed away in Berlin after a long illness. He has written and edited several successful publications on this topic, including his masterpiece, the book Dutch Type (2004) and also Shaping Text (2012). The articles and reviews for BIS Publisher and Eye were solid, explanatoty and inspiring.
I remember Jan as a very dedicated and friendly type lover. I took this picture during a visit to Jan in his apartment in Berlin.

typearture,
@typearture@typo.social avatar

@henk Such sad news! His writings made type, the ways to use it and it's designers accessible, understandable and inspiring for a student. The TDC medal was a well-deserved crown for everything he wrote and set in motion. He will be sorely missed.

Wake up and see your country, once again, fell en masse for populism and xenophobia. I thought people learnt their lesson?

Have some serious doubts about the idea that education will save us: People will follow the pied piper: happily.
