... what is the car autobody shop doing that requires them to seal their doors like this yet leaves their front desk open for business...

Craigp,
@Craigp@mastodon.social avatar

@TerryHancock you'd think just closing the doors would be enough. Maybe someone complained...

Ohhhhhh.

I always wondered why knights would wear white satin.

It's NIGHTS.

That makes a lot more sense and is way more boring than ever-adventuring posh knights.

Craigp,
@Craigp@mastodon.social avatar

I thought it represented their untouchability. Like, look, these knights adventure in white satin. Never even get muddy. Ivory tower knights.

Oh, is the storm actively hitting now? If you could hear sounds in space, I wonder if you'd hear the sound of popcorn popping as satellites get zapped.

As much as I love all these in-person meetups for indies in various industries, I just... can't go?

Every photo is 20+ people, all unmasked, in a room together. Sometimes it's 100+ people. ALL UNMASKED.

How.

I understand we have different priorities, but holy shit.

Even in a low tide week, it is absolutely 100% guaranteed that at least one of those people is contagious. So anyone that cannot risk getting sick simply cannot go.

Slept much better with a new pillow, but alas some construction guys have parked literally at my window and are happily chatting and whistling tunelessly.

Stop being happy before 8! I'm trying to sleep!

When it comes to swearing and stuff online, major platforms had two choices:

An infinite arms race of algoshit and increasingly shit algospeak euphamism treadmills that are ultimately ineffective despite infinite effort

Or allowing a fuck word

Somehow, the first option is much more popular, due to people who should unalive themselves in the throat with a shotg*n

Craigp,
@Craigp@mastodon.social avatar

@SirTapTap Just have to convince marketers which one is right. And marketers LOVE drowning on a treadmill!

So much of what I like about art is light and shadow. Unfortunately, that's roughly 0% of the stuff you spend time on when making 3D art.

Oh, when you USE it, sure. And there's some consideration for value and how light will strike, but when you're making 3D assets it's just... texture texture texture.

Fuck texture, gimme light.

@Craigp@mastodon.social avatar

Hahah, hunting for anything useable in the Unreal asset store is still miserable.

But now my favorite thing is

"10,000,000 AMAZING AVATARS! $2.99!"

vs

"Hotel room. $299.00"

The prices for AI trash and actual content have never been more separated. There's almost nothing in the middle range, at least nothing that comes up when you browse.

Craigp,
@Craigp@mastodon.social avatar

There's no real way to tell if an asset pack is decent, but there is a way to tell if it's NOT decent:

If they have an AI write marketing dross.

I remember a decade ago, I would have just presumed they were Russian or something, and chalked up bad writing to the language barrier. Now it's always just AI.

If you use AI on the The One Thing Literally Everyone Will See First, that doesn't make me confident about the quality of the rest.

@Craigp@mastodon.social avatar

Why do the subsurface and preintegrated skin materials in Unreal GLOW LIKE THE SUN?

It must be due to the subsurface routine, but there doesn't appear to be any way to tell it to tone it the fuck down.

Yes, my use of the Switch on the stationary bike yesterday has left me realizing that no, I can't use the stationary bike every day. Not if I'm gonna do that.

My legs feel extremely iffy today. Hopefully I'll be able to walk enough to buy a new pillow.

Craigp, to random
@Craigp@mastodon.social avatar

I have decided to blame my pillow for my poor sleep this week and today I will quickly, efficiently have it replaced. Not gonna sleep on it.

The proliferation of AI voice acting in games is just terrible.

We're seeing endless reams of boring robot voice delivery and, worse, way less hilariously awful actual human delivery.

Craigp,
@Craigp@mastodon.social avatar

@media_dept I haven't looked into it, but I'm seeing a lot of indie and midbudget games using AI voices. For example the new Endless Ocean.

It's vaguely not terrible in Endless Ocean because she's SUPPOSED to be an AI, but it's still pretty shit.

Function naming problems!

So, you know floor/ceiling/round

But, what do I name one that given the input 3.25 has a 75% chance of rounding it to 3 and 25% chance of rounding it to 4?

I realize it's going to be an incredibly useful function for adaptive music.

But... what do I call it?

Craigp,
@Craigp@mastodon.social avatar

@Nifflas "flump"!

Craigp, to random
@Craigp@mastodon.social avatar

Aww, I've been really looking forward to using the Switch while on the stationary bike, but it seems like everything I try to play is trashed by mobile game tactics.

I paid full price for these games, and yet they still serve ads and demand in-game purchases.

Craigp,
@Craigp@mastodon.social avatar

So I find the new Endless Ocean game. That sounds great!

It's a bit pricey at $50, but at least I-

OH WAIT. It says there's in-app purchases "available". So what, I blow $50 and what do I actually get? How often will it be interrupted by ads?

Once broken, trust is hard to repair. Everything on the Switch is suspect, the whole platform feels trashy now.

Craigp,
@Craigp@mastodon.social avatar

Anyone have any recommendations for things I can play for 15-30 minute bursts on the Switch while cycling?

Requirements:

A game. JUST a game.

A game that can be played without ever being interrupted by ads or upsells.

That Endless Ocean game would be perfect if it were even vaguely trustworthy.

Craigp,
@Craigp@mastodon.social avatar

@adaliabooks If that's the case, I'm happy to never see them.

I suspected it, given that some of the shots were clearly multiplayer... but you know how games that pivot to multiplayer usually destroy their singleplayer entirely.

Good to hear they haven't decayed that far yet.

Craigp,
@Craigp@mastodon.social avatar

@adaliabooks

Sounds good, I'm downloading it now.

The only way to know if a game is even playable is apparently to find someone who's already played it and isn't trying to write a review for adrev. Sigh...

Craigp,
@Craigp@mastodon.social avatar

@adaliabooks Even if I hate it, that's fine as long as I enjoy hating it.

But I can't enjoy a game that stops being a game in order to shovel ads and upsells at me. That's just being hammered by ads, not a game.
