Hey everyone!

I'm working on a video to see what the Linux community (or at least people who follow me) actually use.

So, I created a little form, hosted on my Nextcloud (hopefully it's up to the task...)

It's only up for 2 days, so don't hesitate to share it around, it will help me "touch grass" and see if my preconceived notions are confirmed, or invalidated!

https://nextcloud.thelinuxexp.com/index.php/apps/forms/s/XQRzMrs8QTtCjDfSyP4koA9o

Of course, it's all anonymous, no personal data, it's just for the purposes of creating the video.

@thelinuxEXP hoping to see the results :)

Falling further down the #emacs RH adventures.... just discovered #orgmode and that might be the clincher for me. My writing is very much outline-driven, and I've always wanted an outliner with movable sections (had something in the early PC days that did that). When you combine all of the other functionality, #emacs gets more and more attractive. Key binding memorization is overwhelming but just saw some good advice: use M-x and functions at first. So we continue.

@withoutclass@mastodon.sdf.org avatar

@birv2 you could just not track them but then they wouldn't be versioned in git. You could also use dir locals (I'm not experienced with this) to have a private/public set of notes. I just choose not to write anything that I wouldn't mind being public for work.

withoutclass,
@withoutclass@mastodon.sdf.org avatar

@birv2 Org Mode, Agenda, and Roam are my primary use case for emacs. Yes I can also browse/look at code quickly, and I'm slowly getting used to writing some code there, but for me it's all about the writing and task management.

Then I keep all my org roam notes in git, which I can easily share at work in a readable format since GitHub supports rendering org mode.

Two full months into Pop_OS now. While genereally happy, I struggle a bit with the system getting slower and slower over time, I need to reboot every 2-3 days to get back to normal. Resource monitors shows no havoc procresses and no excessive memory usage.

For some other reasons I installed openSUSE Tumbleweed in a VM with KDE 6 and now find it very tempting to switch. It was super fast and KDE seems just so much better at this point.

Switching distro is a huge PITA, so if you have any arguments against it, I would appreciate that before I go down that road 🙂

withoutclass,
@withoutclass@mastodon.sdf.org avatar

@louis nah that totally makes sense. If you want to just get to work and not have to fiddle a bunch going with a full DE makes sense :)

For me I love the simplicity of a tiling window manager and just having the couple utilities I need installed such as Network manager.

There is also an Emacs Window Manager that exists...😁

withoutclass,
@withoutclass@mastodon.sdf.org avatar

@louis as some others have pointed out, desktop environment and operating system are best to separate in your mind. You could try a different DE first, or decide to go all out and switch to a different OS.

If you want to switch distributions, I'd focus on one that promoted flexibility as opposed to tight defaults like KDE/Gnome etc. Pick a Linux distribution that has a philosophy that appeals to you, the desktop environment (or lack of) can come after.

Question for some friends: what's the best way to import a long markdown file INTO an already existing org file and have it look like the rest of the org file? Background is that I'm working on building out One Big Org File and want to import my running daily notes from Obsidian into the org file. I've found ways to convert markdown to org, but don't know how to actually place it in the org file. Thanks!

It is also the reason I am not bullish on #emacs (anymore) - we are living in golden age of cli/tui-tooling and I am less than interested in an editor trying to be the baseline for all workflows. It starts and ends in my iTerm2 with #fishshell .

Hey, fellow San Francisco tech workers. Is this what you want people to think of you? Is this how you think of other people? No? Then make sure you’re against these assholes, and think twice about voting for anyone they’ve funded. The Gentoo wiki is an excellent source of information, as is the handbook. It's almost not for these times anymore, because you have to read carefully and not just skim the headlines. The most valuable information is usually 2 paragraphs down from that headline. But it's there, trust me. How else would I've learned about the gentoo-pipewire-launcher script ? 😎
