One of the most handy combination of functionality in :emacs: is the narrowing and ediff buffers. Extremely handy. Kudos to all genius folks who have worked on this throughout the years.

Few months back Teams stopped supporting , and their nasty argument was "you can use our web app from your browser". Today I got this in my browser which is .

Unfortunately I have to use Microsoft Teams because my university and the audience all have contract with Microsoft 🙄

Yeah, keep fooling yourself that :microsoft: ❤️ :linux:

Mehrad,

@met They used to have an official flatpak, but few months back they sent an email and announced that they are removing it. The current Flatpak is done by a guy as a personal project:

https://flathub.org/apps/com.github.IsmaelMartinez.teams_for_linux

My issue with this Flatpak is that for an app that needs access to lots of things on my computer, I'm a bit hesitant to install third-party Flatpak. This is because I cannot use Flatseal to disable permissions and still have a function Teams.

Which linux app do you use? They do not provide .deb or .rpm nor any Flatpak, Snap or AppImage. They used to have a Flatpak, but they discontinued it some months ago.

@mikerspencer
Did do any User Agent modification? I had to install Vivaldi to get the damn thing working for the meeting.

Mehrad,
@Mehrad@fosstodon.org avatar

@alphasixtyfive
Don't know. Didn't have time to try. I was already ~30 secs late to the meeting. Perhaps it does until at some point it doesn't (?)

Microsoft might not be all that evil, but these things they do really doesn't help their coding or management credibility.

Today I installed Vivaldi on that machine. Next time I will refuse to give a talk in anything that doesn't have Linux client. The organizers should either acknowledge this request or find someone else.

Yes, Zoom has its own Linux issues (broken SSO auth), but at least the web app is fully functional on both X11 and Wayland as far as my experience goes.

So I'm having to park closer to the wall of our driveway as my Dad now has a Van he uses for work which is taking up room.

Side effect being it was a rather tight squish plugging the cable for my car to charge in.

To resolve this I've made it semi teathered, a few cable clips from Screwfix and a 3D Printed holder for the cable and voila. It actually looks rather neat.

Downside is I need to get a second cable for public charging, which I rarely do.

Nice design. Although there is water's surface tension to account for, but you perhaps can drill a hole at the far bottom corner of each layer/wall, so that excess water can drain out.
The only caveat can be insects crawling in, but that's not likely since the inside is tight and also regularly is in use.

Mehrad,
@Mehrad@fosstodon.org avatar

@Ryanteck
Well, as long as water doesn't go against gravity, it cannot go through a hole from the bottom part

I'm curious to see how long this plastic part lasts 🤓 thanks for sharing

Mehrad, (edited ) to manjaro
@Mehrad@fosstodon.org avatar

If you are using :manjaro: or :arch: and you have graphics card, and you updated to Plasma 6, you are up for a nasty surprise, as after typing your password to login, you will get into a black screen. It seems X11 doesn't have this issue, but Wayland is completely toasted!

The only solution I found is to create /etc/modprobe.d/nvidia.conf and put these two lines in it:

options nvidia_drm modeset=1
options nvidia_drm fbdev=1

Source: https://forum.manjaro.org/t/black-screen-issue-with-manjaro-kde-plasma-on-wayland/161201/9

Try creating this file and see if it solved this Nvidia Wayland issue.

I wonder why Arch or Manjaro maintainers have not packages this file.

I do not want to post every music I listen to here on my mastodon account, but it would nice to be able to share what I'm listening to with friends and family.

I am getting a new computer for an elderly and to be able to support it, I'm removing the Windows and want to install a distro. They have previously used Ubuntu Budgie for about 4 years. Which one of these distros do you suggest for lower maintenance burden in the long run?

🔂 Please boost for getting more opinions.

Mehrad,
@Mehrad@fosstodon.org avatar

Just to add more context:

  1. The maintenance burden is on me and not on them

  2. All they need a browser (mostly for Youtube, Netflix, Facebook) and a media player

  3. The DE will most likely be Budgie (their comfort zone) or KDE Plasma (my comfort zone)

  4. NixOS (of Guix) is also a thing, yes, but I'm not experienced enough to push it for "production" 😉 Although their rollback is extremely tempting.

Mehrad,
@Mehrad@fosstodon.org avatar

@rex Interesting suggestion. I knew about Kinoite (mainly because @MichaelTunnell used to talk about), but somehow it didn't come to my mind for this use-case. I've never used either of silverblue and the KDE variant, so I don't know what sort of issues might rise. I will try it for myself for a couple of days to see. Thanks again for the suggestion.

@Mehrad@fosstodon.org avatar

@pjol
This twocents was more valuable than a whole 10€ note 😊 thanks a bunch. They are valid points. I'm downloading Kinoite to pilot it for a couple of days and see if it meets my requirements. The documentation sounds pretty straightforward and right to the point.

Mehrad,
@Mehrad@fosstodon.org avatar

@pjol Thanks for the tips. Considering the use-case, it is unlikely that I need to install anything other than Google Chrome for them (they don't like Firefox or Chromium).

Is there any reason to go with rpmfusion in this scenario?

Mehrad, to firefox
@Mehrad@fosstodon.org avatar

@bitwarden Today I got this in . According to this notification you are asking for "Access browser activity during navigation" permission which according to the Firefox documentation (link at the end of this toot) means either

  • Detect when streamed videos are about to play and provide a download feature

  • Look for and prevent ad pop-ups from opening

Is there any documentation on that explains which one you need and why?

We need a worldwide law that when you sell software and give up on it for any reason, it becomes public domain and you must release the source code.

Mehrad,
@Mehrad@fosstodon.org avatar

@Tay0
Then they all switch to subscription selling model, which imho is even worse because one can never legally own the software.

I like the general idea, but these corporate maneuvers and rule bending should be considered.

hey @coolbutuseless @mattdray

what's your take on pipe-at-the-end vs pipe-at-the-beginning?

(others, feel free to chime in)

Mehrad,
@Mehrad@fosstodon.org avatar

@almenal99
In my head pipes are like comma, as they indicate that there is more to come. So it should come at the end of the line, unless similar to bash we can use escape character to escape the new line. If someone is after aesthetics, they can use indentation.

I also sometimes use -> assignment at the end of a pipe chain to store the results in a variable. So I can see that having it at the beginning of the line can provide some clarity.

Mehrad,
@Mehrad@fosstodon.org avatar

@mz
