@daringfireball one option for iPad is just to bring the virtualization framework over, introduce that at WWDC on iPad, let devs build tools like https://getbushel.app and also give pro apps more options for background tasks so pro apps can run jobs to completion

Psst... soft relaunch of my merch store today: https://www.redshirtjeff.com — I'll announce it on YouTube later, but if you like classics like "It was DNS" or "Cosplaying as a Sysadmin", get them now before the wider YT audience makes 'em go out of stock!

@geerlingguy my daughter drew a picture of me the other day, guess which shirt she drew, maybe I wear it too much?

Here’s your AI astonishment/nightmare fuel for today:

"TL;DR: single portrait photo + speech audio = hyper-realistic talking face video with precise lip-audio sync, lifelike facial behavior, and naturalistic head movements, generated in real time.”

@stroughtonsmith I made pretty much the same thing on classic Mac OS using MacInTalk to make a cartoon face animate like 30 years ago https://www.zenwheel.com/software/mouth.html

Getting files to and from a PowerBook 3400c with hfsutils (on the theme of ...) https://www.jeffgeerling.com/blog/2024/getting-files-and-powerbook-3400c-hfsutils

zenwheel,
@zenwheel@mastodon.social avatar

@geerlingguy my 3400c suffered a fall in the 90s (pre-MagSafe casualty), I got it running a few years back. I had a heck of a time with older netatalk on modern platforms, but had success with NetBSD in a VM (luckily I have a switch that still talks 10Mb and an Asanté gateway for older Macs)

zenwheel,
@zenwheel@mastodon.social avatar

@geerlingguy last time I messed with that 3400c, I wrote https://github.com/zenwheel/legacyproxy so I could get something to load in Netscape... upon investigating, there's an issue on that repo from 4 years ago, maybe I should update it this , the idea was to speak SSL in the proxy and downscale images to be smaller than the max RAM on those old machines

Why don't SF Symbols autocomplete in Xcode? 🤔 It could even have its own autocomplete picker type with thumbnails

(see also https://github.com/jnewc/SystemIcons)

zenwheel,
@zenwheel@mastodon.social avatar

@stroughtonsmith I just always leave the SF Symbols app open https://developer.apple.com/sf-symbols/

I’ve got the Photos widget on my home screen and I enjoy seeing the memories it surfaces, but I had to pause this morning seeing these pics from a concert last year. How did it know which band it was? Pulled from my email? The web? Listen to the songs from video I recorded? Kind of wild.

zenwheel,
@zenwheel@mastodon.social avatar

@siracusa @dmoren I wish they had a timeline of locations, we have a stadium that was replaced by another one, I’ve never been to the new one, but all my old photos show up as at the new place (Metrodome->US Bank Stadium)

@daringfireball you mentioned the Prius as being a lousy EV, a big part is Japan’s grid can’t support full EV adoption so Toyota isn’t investing in it

If Disney World fireworks are representative of the rest of the US, I can see why you have such a firework culture. Those things aren’t fireworks, those are warheads 😳

zenwheel,
@zenwheel@mastodon.social avatar

@stroughtonsmith they really are, I got to go behind the scenes at a show in Wisconsin once, the bigger shells were 16” (41cm) in diameter and filled the sky when launched

How do you measure the air quality at your home or office?

My Dad has been testing a few AirGradient air quality sensors, and we made a video about them: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZrN-qCe_-s4

zenwheel,
@zenwheel@mastodon.social avatar

@geerlingguy I use Awair monitors which work in HA and have a local endpoint for data, but not really open, AirGradient sounds interesting 🤔

How is it that the Messages data store is still allowed to balloon in size until there’s no space for anything else left and the device grinds to a halt and refuses software updates? Because it forces people to buy larger sized iPhones and iCloud plans, sure. But seriously? This is with Messages in iCloud enabled. I shouldn’t need local copies of /anything/, certainly not 50GB worth. Where’s the ‘offload attachments’ option?

zenwheel,
@zenwheel@mastodon.social avatar

@stroughtonsmith happens on the Mac too 😱 at least I could temporarily move some things (not messages) to an external drive while I updated

Disappointed that this Apple developer demographics survey cuts off at “10 years or more” because I don't get a chance to show off how old I am.

zenwheel,
@zenwheel@mastodon.social avatar

@jamesthomson but you showed me how old I am, 10 years was so recent, I think my first code was in Think C, before Code Warrior. I also remember being excited to get stuff on InfoMac.

My favorite TV show tracking app, the excellent TV Forecast by @mattcomi, is back with a big 2.0 update that has added support for movies.

I've been using TV Forecast for years and I always go back to it because of its clean design, integration with Trakt, and approachable UI.
