Global food system emissions could preclude achieving the 1.5° and 2°C climate change targets (www.science.org)

The Paris Agreement’s goal of limiting the increase in global temperature to 1.5° or 2°C above preindustrial levels requires rapid reductions in greenhouse gas emissions. Although reducing emissions from fossil fuels is essential for meeting this goal, other sources of emissions may also preclude its attainment. We show that...

I read a couple of years ago that farmers in American deserts raise hay to ship to Middle Eastern livestock operations. True or not, our global food system is so convoluted for maximal monetization that it will probably be just as difficult to manage appropriately as the fossil fuels industry.

How very true. I was too focused on alliteration but climaxing commodification would have worked even better!

I'm not sure how easy it will be to get current family farmers involved, but the nature article talked about community and communally held things. At least in my area, these concepts are valued in some way by folks working in agriculture (who also generally own the land as a family) so perhaps the connections are already there. And many of them already do the Japanese 'half farming, half x' whether they want to or not.

The average American consumes 20 pounds of ice cream per year.

On average, Americans consume 12.1 pounds of ice cream every year.

Debatable about this being abstract, this is a pretty remarkable location. But art is debatable, which is one thing of many that makes it great.

I left the mechanic field about ten years ago; this is one of the reasons why. I loved troubleshooting this type of problem but hated telling the customer prices.

I am generally not great at interpreting papers like this, so I want to ask: 40% success rate is essentially random in this setting, yes?

Turns out the US Secretary of Energy is the devil when promoting EVs (www.npr.org)

Her advance team realized there weren’t going to be enough plugs to go around. One of the station’s four chargers was broken, and others were occupied. So an Energy Department staffer tried parking a nonelectric vehicle by one of those working chargers to reserve a spot for the approaching secretary of energy....

While it is frustrating that this person did this, I do not think this is a fair take. The secretary certainly didn't do this action.

Also, the article is about so much more than what you make it out to be.

rhythmisaprancer,

For sure! But saying she is the devil is not the breaks. That is what is not a fair take with regards to the article.

I would like this also, as someone with limited Internet access.

Air Canada Introduces New “Vomit Free” Seating Class For Additional $50 | The Toronto Harold [satire] (www.thetorontoharold.com)

Mississauga - Following last week’s incident where an Air Canada passenger was forced to sit on a vomit covered seat, the air line says they’ve taken steps to ensure that won’t happen again as long as flyers are willing pay. The airline has introduced a new seating tier called “Vomit Free”, that wi

I would think sitting in someone else's vomit would be looked upon as a public health hazard! I can't imagine this would hold up well in a legal setting.

If you really want a long lasting machine, listen to this person. So much nose in this thread. For example: Subarus, in fact, do not have reputation for being long lasting without major repairs. Most people do not keep a vehicle for 10+ years nor for 300k miles. I have a vehicle that is older than that with 30% more miles. As said above, an anecdote.

Somebody keeps track of the cost of ownership over time. Perhaps a company, maybe a government agency.

Good luck!

I agree entirely with what you are saying, but that doesn't change what I said about how long people keep the same car. I suspect we are in the midst of the length of ownership increasing, but not to 10-20 years on average.

Fence post expanding foam

I have a gate mounted to a 6x8 post where the center has rotted out of the post. I am looking to fill the center of the post, rather then replace it if I could. The post itself is still solid, just hollow so the mount bolt have nothing to connect to anymore. I am thinking to try the expanding post foam inside the post, but have...

This is a good idea in general; gate hardware usually attaches by going completely through or around to the back side of the structure. Essentially you do not want the structure to hold the gate hardware with tension, you want the structure to hold the hardware with compression.

Does your major in college really matters?

I’m in my last year of college and for some reason, I decided to design my own major, and I feel like I made a mistake, I’m looking at jobs RN and feel like no employer is going to understand it at all. And that I don’t really have much in demand skills? (FYI - it’s a BA in community development, so kinda like urban...

I will put in another vote for urban planning. Pursuing employment with a city you would like to work for, in any department, will help. Thos will likely get you on the ground experience with not only that particular aspect of the city, but also the culture of employment there.

Additionally, there are usually NGOs in urban areas that provide a variety of services, some of which would benefit from what I perceive your education to be in. Or "delay" yourself and look at international outreach programs that are relevant and meaningful.
