Why is Tasmania Oregon???

Viking_Hippie,

99.9% of the population is in one super liberal hipster city and the rest is racist farmers? 🤷

kersploosh,
@kersploosh@sh.itjust.works avatar

This is amazingly accurate for Oregon.

cmbabul,

It ain’t far off from Washington neither

kersploosh,
@kersploosh@sh.itjust.works avatar

100%

ComradePorkRoll,

Fun fact, Oregon was pretty close to being a white-only state. Probably explains why they have a big problem with neonazis nowadays.

Viking_Hippie,

Yeah, I heard about that in an excellent episode of Behind the Bastards 😁

Deceptichum,
@Deceptichum@sh.itjust.works avatar

Really more of an Alabama with all that incest going on.

sploosh,

Because it is south of Australian California, like Oregon is north of American California.

gnuplusmatt,

With the amount of inbreeding in Tasmania, it’s probably more Alabama than Queensland… Which probably should have been marked Florida - if you’ve ever been to the Gold Coast

Got_Bent,

I like that if you squint really hard, you could almost flip that map upside down and get a reasonable cultural map of the United States.

XTL, (edited )

Well… it’s Australia. It is upside down.

pewgar_seemsimandroid,

Midnitte,

Nice, does Australian NJ also have a very beautiful environment once you leave the populous north, or is it flipped since it’s Australia?

boogetyboo,

Canberra is called the Bush Capital. It’s a small city in the middle of a lot of bush, it’s very beautiful.

SirSamuel,

Little known fact(oid).

Ohio’s original state motto was “75% of our name is vowels”

Iowa’s State motto was “…God dammit Ohio!”

These are the most interesting things about both states. I should know, I’m from Ohio.

And if you want to experience the United States Midwest in song form, look up Bird Bird Bird by Lou and Peter Berryman

graeghos_714,

The driving in the hills of southern Ohio can be pretty nice. I used to spend a lot of time in the Dover area. Michigan and Ohio were my sales territory for a few years

turbowafflz,

In case anyone is curious, as far as I can tell neither of these mottos are real

protist, (edited )

Don’t forget Idaho’s state motto:

“Idaho.”

lars,

Don’t forget where they got the name Idaho:

This is just a message to time travelers because this retcon absolutely forgot/made it up

SirSamuel,

factoid (2) - an assumption or speculation that is reported and repeated so often that it becomes accepted as fact.

Absolutely 100% made up. So, if that’s the most interesting thing about each state, and it’s fictional, imagine how mind numbingly boring the corn states must be

(I’m joking ofc, Ohio has a few redeeming qualities. The southeastern portion is particularly beautiful, Idaho has some staggering vistas, and Iowa… I mean, 75% of their name is vowels I guess)

captainlezbian, (edited )

You’ve never been here have you? Because nobody from Ohio would ever call southeastern Ohio It’s redeeming quality. Sure it’s beautiful, but it’s less pretty than Kentucky and the best thing you can say about the people there is that you won’t run into many.

Ohio has its positives. Columbus is fucking weird in a good way. Cleveland is a little slice of Michigan. And the amusement parks are great. Also the Ohio river and Lake Erie are awesome. Just don’t go south of Columbus or anywhere near Indiana.

SirSamuel, (edited )

You’ve never been here have you?

I’m born and raised in Ohio slap-nut. My friends and family stretch from Steubenville, Athens, Gallapolis, on through Portsmouth, and over to Cincinnati. I can speak with some authority here

Because nobody from Ohio would ever call southeastern Ohio It’s redeeming quality

??? You’ve clearly never been to the Hocking Hills, or your values are drastically different from mine

Sure it’s beautiful,

That’s the point

but it’s less pretty than Kentucky

Who the hell said anything about Kentucky?

and the best thing you can say about the people there is that you won’t run into many.

Ah some are okay, but yeah.

Columbus is fucking weird

100% agree

in a good way.

Ehhhhhhh, 80% agree

Just don’t go south of Columbus or anywhere near Indiana.

To me there is a wretched stretch of Ohio the glaciers left behind that’s great for farming and little else. It’s flat, boring, and the people that live there think they are at the center of the universe.

Look I grew up in the flats. My extended family lived in the hills near the river. I was always jealous of them when I was a kid. Once i grew up I traveled the world a bit and found the places I really like. Fjords, snow-capped mountains, bioluminescent bays. And I found the quiet beauty of the Ohio River valley to have it’s own charm. But the flatlands of Ohio are only good for farming and, these days, solar energy.

What southeastern Ohio lacks is economy. It’s so depressed it’s attempted suicide several times. Many rural people struggle economically, and it affects how they think. It keeps them small.

But hey, the state name looks like a tractor, so that’s… something

captainlezbian,

Fair enough I’d forgotten hocking hills. Went there a few times as a kid. When I think of southeastern Ohio I think of the little hills of Appalachia. But it always has felt like the prelude to the big beauty that appears once you get past the state’s borders. Cincy has an odd beauty to it.

I can be a bit harsh towards southeastern Ohio as I’ve known more than my fair share of folks who’ve fled it. So in my mind it’s a place of horror stories more than beauty.

But yeah you’re absolutely right about the flats. My family is from there and I swear to shit it’s just the fucking worst. I grew up in the suburban stretch of the southwest and will say that that’s a different kind of the Ohio shithole.

nilloc, (edited )

Michigander here, Toledo is an actual slice of Michigan, but Ohio can keep it.

Cedar Point is pretty awesome though.

I dunno, Jungle jims is kinda neat. And a few scattered museums across the state. But otherwise yeah.

SirSamuel,

Don’t forget the Hocking Hills too.

I just went to Jungle Jim’s for the first time this weekend actually. What an amazing place. For those that don’t know, it’s basically an IKEA sized grocery store. Over 6 acres (24000 m^2 )

Zorsith, (edited )
@Zorsith@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Funny, I just got out of their parking lot. its basically 3-4 whole grocery stores and a warehouse all together.

I don’t drink alcohol myself, but the alcohol department is the size of a grocery store on its own with booze from all over. Aisles upon aisles of wine and beer, and a backroom for the more expensive stuff (4 digit price tags and up). Cigars, brewing kits, etc.

The “regular” groceries and cookware section are the entrance.

A health foods area, roughly large gas station in size.

Then the main cool factor (and biggest section) is international foods. There’s no real good way to describe it with words.

I thought that the most interesting fact about Ohio is that the name looks like a tractor.

Hillock,

I can’t unsee it anymore. It really does look like one.

I sometimes also call Australia as a whole the Texas of the Commonwealth nations. We’re big, we have snakes and desert, we love big things, we’re ornery and we’ve flirted with secession more than once.

Excrubulent,

As someone who lives in Auscalifornia, it is kind of uncannily accurate.

TQuid,

As someone from New Mexico, I’m just happy to be included (Americans often assume it’s a country outside the USA)
