Amidst all the front-page 737 Max coverage, glad to see Axios note that the US takes aviation safety extremely seriously while basically letting carmakers design whatever they like.

What is the psychology of this disparity?

I can imagine folks wholesale abandoning air travel if it caused 10,000s of deaths per year.

But then again, prior to Covid, I wouldn’t have thought we would have the stomach of 100s to 1000s of deaths per day while carrying on ‘business as usual’.

It reminds me of that cartoon in a boiling pot hopping out when tossed in boiling water,

But lounging when put in the water when it is cool— then remaining as it is brought to a boil.

@atthenius @davidzipper American obsession with personal responsibility / delusions about one's own abilities. People think other drivers are the danger and think police are the answer, can't see the systemic risks.
