🤔 I’m preparing my talk at the moment and I’d be glad to hear your thoughts:

In which areas do you see the most potential for innovative web design when it comes to the latest and greatest features?

Like, which CSS features would you recommend a designer (or developer) to learn who wants to create outstanding work for the Web in 2024? ✨

@matthiasott

  • Scroll driven animations
  • View transitions
  • Container queries
  • Color spaces
  • Popover API + anchoring (and selectbox or selectmenu or whatever it's called at the moment)

@matthiasott Grid for structure, nesting and variables for organization, and :has()!

mxbck,
@mxbck@front-end.social avatar

@matthiasott in terms of producing novel design: (sub)grid, view transitions, scroll-timeline

for better code architecture: layers, container/style queries, :has

@mxbck @matthiasott Nice summary!

@svgeesus @mxbck plus CSS Color, of course 😉

@matthiasott others have already said these, but I’m most excited to learn more about view transitions, layers, and scope. I guess subgrid is new, too, but for some reason it feels more intuitive to me

@matthiasott I still think grid is the most exciting 'new' feature a lot of devs have ignored 😅 and subgrid makes it even better!

@mia @matthiasott Oh, no, I miss float gymnatic 😂😂😂 (I'm back to the display:table for a pdf generator 🥹😅😆)

@matthiasott for designers, CSS mask is a powerful tool especially when you master the mask-composite property.

@matthiasott css animations, view transitions, starting-style and style queries should make for much smoother UIs, popovers and anchor positioning for much easier rich interaction.

@Kilian Thank you, Kilian! Will you be in Amsterdam in June as well?

Kilian,

@matthiasott yep, see you there!

@Kilian Yay! 😎

@matthiasott Vanilla CSS 🤓

@voxpelli 🔥🥶

@matthiasott On a less opinionated note: I’m still intrigued about the many underutilized media queries out there – especially those targeting hover and pointer precision – which may be extra relevant if one wants to adapt to eg AR-browsers
