@jon for the record, I do read my Bxl playbook 😅

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

@Squig re the original toot - the BE-NL news is welcome. But I’m not sure there’s much in terms of wider conclusions to draw. SNCB & NS get along OK. There is adequate rolling stock. The route is busy. I think only Thalys (Eurostar) will be annoyed.

Squig,
@Squig@eupolicy.social avatar

@jon It‘s not only SNCB and NS though, but also Ariva, and now also the Italians.

I just found it interesteing that - after a decade of Thalys basically doing what it wants and NS/SNCB mishandling Fyra - there is so much (very welcome) movement all relatively at once; that‘s what I meant with conclusions.

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

@Squig Arriva, forget it. They’ve already cancelled. Trenitalia/Qbuzz is serious - but Trenitalia is keen in general. Whether NL-BE is what they try next, we’ll see.

Squig,
@Squig@eupolicy.social avatar

@jon where can I find more about the cancellation? 😅

Thx!

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

@Squig there was some news story in Dutch the other day.

Squig,
@Squig@eupolicy.social avatar

@jon Found it, but it seems to not be Arriva‘s fault at all: https://www.gic.nl/nieuws/arriva-trein-van-groningen-naar-parijs-gaat-niet-door

If I understand this correctly (and I studied my BA in Dutch, so…) the Dutch ministry of transport is blocking any new international connection that wants to use Dutch infrastructure, citing end-of-capacity.

The Dutch urgently need to build more and better* train tracks.

*(Better = for trains that can go faster than 100)

partim,
@partim@social.tchncs.de avatar

@Squig @jon I think they got this wrong. International services with the exception of the Intercity services to Brussels will not be part of the main rail concession which will go to NS. Instead, they will be operated open access – Arriva is free to run their trains. What got refused is the Groningen/Leeuwarden to Zwolle peak hour domestic services.

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

@Squig But Arriva never had a plan. This was all a piece in their game to break NS’s Randstad monopoly

PGLux,

@jon @Squig

In 1998-99, Lovers and Connex tried to break into that monopoly, by proposing Optio.

A network of 30-min Takt lines with the Randstadt area.

Amsterdam-Haarlem was the very first route announced, using M2 carriages and Class 25s ex-SNCB.

https://www.nicospilt.com/index_Lovers.htm

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

@Squig considering Arriva doesn’t have trains to do it, it was never viable anyway.

PGLux,

@jon @Squig

Now that ICNGs are entering revenue service, there might be some spare ICR carriages available, some of them being cleared for 🇩🇪 🇧🇪 🇫🇷 🇱🇺

Let's watch this out...

patrick,
@patrick@mendeddrum.org avatar

@PGLux @jon @Squig These carriages were apparently put up for sale in late ‘22, in batches of at least 75. Can’t find any more recent news. https://www.treinenweb.nl/nieuws/9611/ns-zet-icr-rijtuigen-te-koop.html

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

@patrick @PGLux @Squig and my bet was Flix would buy them. vMax is only 160 though…

patrick,
@patrick@mendeddrum.org avatar

@jon @PGLux @Squig So, the answer was just boosted into my timeline by @smveerman: TUI bought them.

From: @coreice
https://mastodon.social/@coreice/110928552220030605

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

@patrick @PGLux @Squig @smveerman @coreice Thanks. But given very few have an approval outside Netherlands… how’s this going to work?

PGLux,

@jon @patrick @Squig @smveerman @coreice

Out of the 313 ICR carriages built, 166 are cleared for 🇳🇱 🇧🇪 🇱🇺 🇩🇪 .

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

@PGLux @patrick @Squig @smveerman @coreice Thanks. And they have button operated doors. Reasonable interiors. And a/c. But vMax only 160km/h. Useable by GreenCityTrip as seaters. Convertible to couchettes? Even worthwhile? Not sure…

PGLux,

@jon @patrick @Squig @smveerman @coreice

As I wrote earlier, the Y32 bogies of ICR stock, as those of ALL Corail carriages of SNCF, have passive provision for magnetic brakes.

So, it wouldn't be that hard to upgrade ICR stock to 200.

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

@PGLux @patrick @Squig @smveerman @coreice sure, but would you do that with 40 year old carriages? Would it make financial sense?

PGLux,

@jon @patrick @Squig @smveerman @coreice

The cardbodies of ICR stock are still in pretty good condition.

Although the decision by NS to order these was a consequence of a short lease of Corail cars (1978-81), the design of ICR is far more robust.

The modernisation performed 20 years ago was a good job and is still paying off.

A pair of magnetic brakes won't be that hard and costly to fit.

coreice,

@PGLux @jon @patrick @Squig @smveerman I am wondering if that is still true. For the sets used in the Benelux train (IC 9200) there is a B in the RIC table but no D or L as far as I know. They used to go to D and L also but since they are used on the HSL the coaches have gone through multiple renovations.

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

@coreice @PGLux @patrick @Squig @smveerman the key question: what transformers are on board? If they’re 4 voltage then it shouldn’t be hard to (re-)approve them.

coreice,

@jon @PGLux @patrick @Squig @smveerman From one in a Benelux service. 1000 V 16 2/3 Hz.

coreice,

@patrick @jon @PGLux @Squig @smveerman In addition to the tooth I posted: I am wondering how it will go with the ICR's. A large part of the fleet has lost it's RIC registration as far as I know. There is no [D] anymore on the RIC table.

PGLux,

@coreice @patrick @jon @Squig @smveerman

Converting to sleeper use daytime rolling stock aged 40 is gonna be quite something..

Perhaps TUI 'd better try to get back its original Bvcmh from MSM.

patrick,
@patrick@mendeddrum.org avatar

@PGLux @coreice @jon @Squig @smveerman They’re not (all) going to be converted, see the article.

PGLux,

@patrick @coreice @jon @Squig @smveerman

Indeed, but daytime use will mean shorter distance, inevitably.

coreice,

@PGLux @patrick @jon @Squig @smveerman With the open access discussions in The Netherlands, maybe they are aiming at providing such services? Or maybe even acquire them for renting like Euro Express does?

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

@coreice @PGLux @patrick @Squig @smveerman What voltage transformers do these have? 1500v dc, 3000v dc (because Belgium), 50Hz ac because HSL. But 16.7Hz too?

PGLux,

@jon @coreice @patrick @Squig @smveerman

Buurland subfleet has 4-voltage inverters, yes.

Before the IR network was axed in December 2002, the IR services (The Hague) Eindhoven - Düsseldorf ran partly with ICR stock.

patrick,
@patrick@mendeddrum.org avatar

@jon @PGLux @Squig With Flix not getting their requested path in NL I wonder whether they would still want them…

partim,
@partim@social.tchncs.de avatar

@patrick @jon @PGLux @Squig Are they not? What did I miss?

patrick,
@patrick@mendeddrum.org avatar

@partim @jon @PGLux @Squig The conceptconcessie HSN doesn’t leave any room on Asd-Ledn-Rtd as far as I understood. And that is part of the requested path.

partim,
@partim@social.tchncs.de avatar

@patrick @jon @PGLux @Squig Might get better once they finished quadrupling Den Haag HS – Rotterdam?

patrick,
@patrick@mendeddrum.org avatar

It may still be possible but chances are slim?

partim,
@partim@social.tchncs.de avatar

@patrick @jon @PGLux @Squig Thanks for the link! Somehow missed this. So, Trenitalia could go to Berlin via Arnhem (especially since the 10 minute IC service between Utrecht and Arnhem probably won’t come back) and to Paris. Or, well, at least as far as Prorail is involved.

patrick,
@patrick@mendeddrum.org avatar

@partim @jon @PGLux @Squig Yes, that looks possible. No idea how easy a track Duisburg-Berlin would be to get though. And Flixtrain could go as far as Asd if wanted but not further.

PGLux,

@patrick @partim @jon @Squig

No paths left on HSLZuid?

partim,
@partim@social.tchncs.de avatar

@PGLux @patrick @jon @Squig Flix paying for the HSL?

patrick,
@patrick@mendeddrum.org avatar

@partim @PGLux @jon @Squig Their reasoning for the train was getting holidaymakers to the coast. HSL wouldn’t fit that. But who knows.

PGLux,

@patrick @partim @jon @Squig

If that is the reason, then Flix could re-direct its application to Zandvoort.

partim,
@partim@social.tchncs.de avatar

@PGLux @patrick @jon @Squig One reason for the refusal was that there is no paths from Utrecht to Haarlem via Amsterdam C. And Zandvoort can’t cope with a conventional train at all. Flix doesn’t do control carriages.

PGLux,

@partim @patrick @jon @Squig

Before the renovation of ICR stock, the IC line Zandvoort - Masstricht had no driving trailers....

Squig,
@Squig@eupolicy.social avatar

@patrick @partim @jon @PGLux it‘s putting pressure on already full German tracks (that are also often clogged due to infrastructure failure, more often than the alternatives, and HS trains can‘t go fast there, it‘s too densely populated with no meaningfull bypasses.

PGLux,

@Squig @patrick @partim @jon

Isn't 3-tracking of Duisburg - Zevenaar with 230 km/h on the agenda?

partim,
@partim@social.tchncs.de avatar

@PGLux @Squig @patrick @jon The line is closed all September again for this very purpose.

PGLux,

@partim @patrick @jon @Squig

Meanwhile, plans to build HSL-Oost are slowly reviving...

PGLux,

@partim @patrick @jon @Squig

That was in the plan named Rail 21 in 1990...

partim,
@partim@social.tchncs.de avatar

@PGLux @patrick @jon @Squig Luckily, they started construction before Covid became a welcome excuse to gut the Programma Hoogfrequent Spoorvervoer again.

PGLux,

@partim @patrick @jon @Squig

When is completion due?

partim,
@partim@social.tchncs.de avatar

@PGLux @patrick @jon @Squig Ah, sorry. I see now that there are no concrete plans for quadrupling Schiedam – Delft Campus. So, probably not going to happen.

PGLux,

@partim @patrick @jon @Squig

Schiedam - Delft Campus wouldn't be too hard/long to 4-track, though...

partim,
@partim@social.tchncs.de avatar

@PGLux @patrick @jon @Squig Sure. But there’s no plans and there’s unlikely to be any new plans. Might change next year, but I am not going to hold my breath.

PGLux,

@partim @patrick @jon @Squig

It's only a matter of 2-3 years until NS recovers pre-Covis trafic figures.

patrick,
@patrick@mendeddrum.org avatar

@PGLux @partim @jon @Squig Not hard, but sensitive due to nature concerns; and not necessary for the 8 IC’s plus 6 Sprinters per hour planned.

partim,
@partim@social.tchncs.de avatar

@patrick @PGLux @jon @Squig It’s not just me who thinks running 14 train pairs per hour over a double track line is insanity, right?

patrick,
@patrick@mendeddrum.org avatar

@partim @PGLux @jon @Squig A train every four minutes. Perfectly reasonable 😂.

partim,
@partim@social.tchncs.de avatar

@patrick @PGLux @jon @Squig Incidentally, the railway has a follow up this morning:

PGLux,

@partim @patrick @jon @Squig

No Freighters at all?

smveerman,
@smveerman@zug.network avatar

@partim @PGLux @patrick @jon @Squig A billion euros has been reserved for the railway between Delft and Schiedam in the National Growth Fund, but the question is whether that will survive the elections.

patrick,
@patrick@mendeddrum.org avatar

@PGLux @partim @jon @Squig There’s 14/day in the NS proposal now. So we’re almost up to last-century levels here 😂.

PGLux,

@patrick @partim @jon @Squig

14/day, what do you mean?

patrick,
@patrick@mendeddrum.org avatar

@PGLux @partim @jon @Squig NS has requested 14 paths per day Ams-Paris. That is on top of Ams-London and IC Brussels.

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

@patrick @PGLux @partim @Squig and from Brussels on what infra? The high speed line?

partim,
@partim@social.tchncs.de avatar

@jon @patrick @PGLux @Squig Yes. This is just Thalys which, at least for now, is represented by NS International in the Netherlands.

Squig,
@Squig@eupolicy.social avatar

@partim @patrick @jon @PGLux they could do much more, whereas a Thalys train is not gonna be much quicker than ICNG north of Bxl (but yeah, you do need direct trains Ams - Paris I suppose).

PGLux,

@Squig @partim @patrick @jon

A 1-hr Takt on Paris N - Amsterdam C (i.e. 16 returns daily) by Thalys is all but excessive.

Squig,
@Squig@eupolicy.social avatar

@PGLux @partim @patrick @jon i was proposing the opposite. With that many ICs, and their reduced time, 4 trains Amsterdam - Paris might suffice, freeing up Thalys train sets to make Bxl - Zürich or Bxl - Hanover feasible.

PGLux,

@Squig @partim @patrick @jon

No, it wouldn't suffice.

From 1996 until the opening of HSLZuid, the 4 daily Thalys Paris - Amsterdam were sold ut weeks in advance. So no.

Brussels -Zurich cannot be done with the current Thalys PBKA fleet.

Brussels - Hanover (Berlin) should be a mater for ICE Inernational, not Thalys.

Squig,
@Squig@eupolicy.social avatar

@PGLux @partim @patrick @jon forget DB on any of this, is my motto 🤷‍♀️

partim,
@partim@social.tchncs.de avatar

@Squig @PGLux @patrick @jon This might change once the class 408 fleet has reached a reasonable size. Berlin – Brussels is very likely a thing on their agenda (and more
reasonable than Berlin – Paris, too.)

Squig,
@Squig@eupolicy.social avatar

@partim @PGLux @patrick @jon not without the HSL H - BI and upgrades in the Ruhr and in Cologne, unfortunately.

partim,
@partim@social.tchncs.de avatar

@Squig @PGLux @patrick @jon Stick the Brussels segment to the end of an existing Berlin – Cologne run?

PGLux,

@partim @Squig @patrick @jon

Are 408 and 402 couplable? 🙃

partim,
@partim@social.tchncs.de avatar

@PGLux @Squig @patrick @jon Run two 408s? They ordered 90 of the things.

PGLux,

@partim @Squig @patrick @jon

That would require 3 408s, as that from Düsseldorf Hbf joins in Hamm...

partim,
@partim@social.tchncs.de avatar

@PGLux @Squig @patrick @jon They are planning to stop doing that.

PGLux,

@partim @Squig @patrick @jon

And what would the substitute service pattern look like?

Squig,
@Squig@eupolicy.social avatar

@PGLux @partim @patrick @jon hopefully every 1h for both Ddorf and Cologne, alternating 30 min-ish (a man can dream)

partim,
@partim@social.tchncs.de avatar

@Squig @PGLux @patrick @jon I believe that’s the plan.

PGLux,

@jon @Squig

Given the undercapacity at Thalys, it won't hurt them much.
