An influencer: toots whatever pushes the buttons of their community, even if the measure they're writing about has negligible practical impact

An analyst: stops to check whether the impact of a measure is meaningful, and if it isn't, will not praise it just to get clicks or to please their community

IF you want a flight ban that's MEANINGFUL, do this

  • 4 hours by train, not 2.5 hours

  • apply to ALL flights, inc. transfers and private jets

  • turn connecting flights into connecting trains with guaranteed passenger rights in case of delay

Anything LESS than that and it's gesture politics

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

@WhiteCatTamer No. What was done in France was to engineer it deliberately to be ineffective. Knowing few people would look at the details.

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

@gudroot Indeed. Absolutely. Although if you look at France's ban - you could easily ban a lot more because the rail network is quite fast, but they have not.

Oh look, SBB’s Giruno has received certification for Austria, Germany, and Italy today:

@partim Italy? Did it not have that already? 🤔

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

@partim Ah but the 407 is undergoing a revision of its on board systems. So perhaps that's the same here - Giruno revision for DE and AT means a new approval for IT?

Polish rail logic!

Hackers demonstrate NEWAG industrial sabotage of Impuls EMUs for Koleje Dolnośląskie https://jonworth.eu/newags-digital-sabotage-of-dolny-slasks-trains-what-were-they-thinking/

AND then Koleje Śląskie orders a bunch more of them anyway 🤦‍♂️ BEFORE we even have a resolution of the sabotage case

Hmmm

Not good, PayPal

Try to reset my password, and I get stuck in a neverending loop... For some reason the password change is not confirmed with the 2FA app I use, but with SMS, and when I put that code in it takes me back to start of the password change process, and the original password is retained

Same in any browser I try…

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

@mjr It's weird. Because to login 2FA is fine, so why the crap old SMS system to confirm a password change? Not clever AT ALL. And even less clever that it doesn’t work…

Who-ha. In November 2024 the LGV high speed line between Paris and Lyon will be closed for four days due to the installation of the ETCS signalling system.

TGV will be running on the conventional line, that means Paris - Marseille in 7h20 instead of 3h.

Chemnitz is getting 2 trains when it's capital of culture 🎉 🎉 🎉

Kaunas got NO trains to Poland
Tartu will likely get NO trains to Latvia
Nova Gorica might well get NO trains to Gorizia in 2025, and that's just a few km

Crap rail connections are aImost part of the deal for Capitals of Culture by now

Agh, this DB not getting its timetables sorted for building works is really grating now

We’ve known for a while that there are enduring problems between Kassel and Göttingen https://www.deutschebahn.com/de/presse/presse-regional/pr-hamburg-de/aktuell/presseinformationen-regional/Arbeiten-im-Rauhebergtunnel-zwischen-Goettingen-und-Kassel-Fernverkehrszuege-fahren-ab-Maerz-nach-neuem-Konzept-12700692#

So why can this not be reflected in travel planners?

"There might be a delay of 120 minutes" is not very helpful. Tell me how to go another way instead! In previous years DB was better at this

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

@sdm I really don't get it. Up until last year DB was so good at this. Routes around engineering work were listed. OK, your trip was longer, but you at least knew what to do. Now? 🤷‍♂️ No idea. I need to work out some route manually.

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

@elba013 Ah, thank you. That part explains it. Because I am trying to work out how to get from Karlsruhe to Berlin in early May. And I have no idea how to even make it work! Maybe I go via Nürnberg?

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

@antonia Although I could be a pain - just book it, knowing the Zugbindung will be aufgehoben, and then I can take any train with a cheap ticket

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

@elba013 Right. And I also am starting my trip in France, and need to get to Berlin that night... so I am not immensely flexible in terms of my routes around the problems. I can tolerate all sorts of problems with diversions, but not knowing how they will work is inexcusable I think.

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

@elba013 Do I understand it right that after 23 March both building works will have started, so whatever it would tell me on 24 March will then - with luck - also apply the weeks later?

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

@elba013 25 March, ICE 370 has time planned in for a diversion between Hanau and Fulda. Your tactic is useful :-)

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

@elba013 Ah at least that's honest!

I think I am going to just book Nuits-sous-Ravières - Berlin as timetabled currently, knowing it will be re-timetabled, Zugbindung aufgehoben - and I will then re-route accordingly

And I will return to France from Hamburg, not Berlin, so will go via Köln and take the ex-Thalys to Paris

@timrichards If you want a transport oddity, Line A in Los Angeles is the longest light rail line in the world https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Line_(Los_Angeles_Metro) Ride it end to end! :-)
