@nixCraft This is more or less what my thinking has been most of my life.
"If I told lies like that, I'd get caught."
"If I stole things like that, I'd get caught."
"If I behaved so shamefully, I'd be ostracized."
But I also think, "Evil triumphs when good men do nothing."
I'm reminded of the prostitute that messaged me a couple months ago out of the blue, who'd been trolling Mastodon for clients. As soon as I knew, I gathered all the evidence I could and turned it over to the police.
@nixCraft This certainly sums up a lot. Drives me crazy watching these people who are very obvious -- not even subtle -- con artists get away with all sorts of crazy stuff. As far as I can tell it's just through sheer force -- like a hurricane. They just keep forcing forcing forcing and everyone lies down to let them walk over them.
I suspect with proper analysis we all could do it, but we would have to suspend all morals and become sociopaths by choice.

This is kinda the point. Everyone acknowledges the sociopathy but do nothing about it because of their own selfishness and lack of empathy. For every evil act there were a bunch of people who just watched it, said and did nothing.
@olenglishD@nazokiyoubinbou There's definitely a reason for that. From a young age, we're taught not to take the law into our own hands. Even police advise against pursuing criminals ourselves, even if we witness them stealing our belongings. We're instructed to wait for the police to arrive & handle the situation. Sometimes, simply speaking out against wrongdoing can get you into legal trouble. I know a life of crime isn't for me. I'll stick to my 9-to-5 routine, even if I'm just scraping by
