    RickRae,

    @onat

    Defitely go back and check your older lessons. This most recent update didn't affect me much, but the last Japanese tree update not only massively changed what I supposedly had already learned, but also jumped me ahead past stuff I'd never before seen.

    Probably affected me more because I'm very early in the course, but I had to go back and "review" all the material that was new to me.

    @RickRae It seems that my tree just changed again. I have sections now, which was only accessible on the latest app version of Duo. Web version and latest app are now the same. But on the old APK version, I'm still on Unit 127. 😆

    Old lessons seem to be intact but I'll peek at the old ones some other time.

    Duolingo web app screenshot of all the sections of the French course Section 1: Rookie (Completed) Section 2: Explorer (Completed) Section 3: Traveler (Completed) Section 4: Trailblazer (Completed) Section 5: Adventurer (Completed) Section 6: Discoverer (Completed) Section 7: Daredevil (12 of 20 units) Section 8: Navigator (no progress yet) Section 9: Champion (no progress yet)

    RickRae,

    @onat

    Thanks for the screen grabs. Wow, that second half's new. I guess I'll see it eventually; they seem to roll changes out in waves/stages.

    I suppose I've gotten "used to" the tightly controlled singular path (as much as I can), but I still miss the old system in which one could more easily skip around, there was a separate tab for stories (which you could read any time you liked!), and so on.

    And, maybe just my imagination (or coincidental), but tree updates seemed less disruptive, too.

    @RickRae I miss the old Duolingo too. I detest the path but I can't do anything about it, I just have to finish the whole tree before I could move on. 😆

    I finished the French tree twice already, and got digital certificates on both. I think before, they're just picking a bunch of things someone should learn but now, it's based on DELF, so that's probably why updates are always disruptive.

    RickRae,

    @onat

    The app informed me last night that my Spanish course has been "realigned" and my position adjusted accordingly. Haven't dug into that yet, but when I went for Legendary on the S3/U8 closing lesson, it threw all manner of stuff at me I'd never seen before.

    I bailed out of it and switched to Japanese until I have time to go back through the old lessons to see what they've done.

    (I'm on S3/U16 but ever since the switch to "path" I've been diligently Legendary-ing old lessons for review.)

    RickRae,

    @onat

    That's not far different from what happened the last time there was a major Spanish update; in that instance they moved me quite a bit forward along the path and marked everything behind me as completed.

    When I checked, I found there was a lot I'd not been exposed to. I went back to a point that looked reasonable and "retook" all the lessons.

    I don't mean to be totally down on the updates; the early Japanese lessons have greatly improved. More focus on sentence construction now.

    RickRae,

    @onat

    Ack! They just hit my Japanese course too!

    I always dread seeing the phrase "new and improved". :blobcatglare:

    @RickRae There it is. Hopefully, the new stuff is actually improved. Yesterday, while I was doing a lesson, it froze midway and I had to refresh. And when I went back, the unit content is entirely different from what it was just a few seconds ago. 😆 Duo is on an update roll. I wonder what feature are they going to ax next? I'll never forgive them when they closed groups.

    RickRae,

    @onat

    Oh man, I really miss the question discussions. I often went to them for insights and understanding.

    First they killed voting in the app, which I didn't mind too much. Then they locked the discussions completely for everyone. Not so bad for Spanish since the old stuff was still there, but the Japanese course is new and some questions had no discussion at all.

    And then they deleted them altogether. :blobcatfacepalm:

    @RickRae I learned a lot on the discussions ever since the beginning. They provided context that Duo did not have. I guess they couldn't monetize it so they just axed it all together.

    The leaderboard is probably the only safe thing on Duo. I have read some people buy gems to be able to earn more XP.

    I also use the report function A LOT and have more than a hundred of suggestions implemented. It was nice that as a learner, I am still able to contribute to the course.
