🤔 user bound keyword filtering would be really useful for mastodon I think.

As in - in general, I want to see posts about Thing.

In the same way, I'm happy to see posts from UserX.

But I know I don't want to see anything that UserX has to say about Thing.

Either because they talk about it a lot in comparison to everyone else

Or I think they're talking out of their arse on the subject of Thing

Or even because it's actually a different Thing they are talking about with the same name.

RickRae,

@basil

Agreed.

I bought a JBL Bluetooth boombox type thing (I don't know what you call what used to be a boombox...portable audio...thing?) and was struggling to come up with how to hang it on my bike. Searched for a holder or bracket or something, found one, and thought, "Wait a minute...that looks like a water bottle cage." Sure enough, it drops right into a regular old water bottle cage. So, I will not be spending seventeen more dollars to hang it on a

RickRae,

@swelljoe

Clever of you. Makes me wonder if it was part of the design requirements, or perhaps someone on the design team was a cyclist.

Quite surprising what they can squeeze into/out of small packages these days. I bought a cheap waterproof "hockey puck" Bluetooth speaker to safely listen to podcasts while showering. I wasn't expecting much but it's surprisingly loud with a solid bottom end.

Today's update: the baseplate is now totally modular, with the tower now made from separate pieces, rather than being slowly printed in place on top of the base. At the cost of a few extra threaded inserts, the tower is now tall enough that the handle is above the centre of gravity, and the whole thing can now be easily picked up and carted around. No longer does moving this around on my desk feel like arguing with a petrified octopus.

A photo of those parts attached together, revealing the bridge is a tall handle for the whole unit. A spool of soldering wire has been slotted in between the towers, near the base.
A photo of a fully assembled soldering station, made from mostly 3d printed parts. There are four articulated arms extending out from the corners of the base, with various implements attached to them.

RickRae,

@timixretroplays

I need to try those some day. I've only ever used trilobe thread-rolling screws (which do work great).

    Defitely go back and check your older lessons. This most recent update didn't affect me much, but the last Japanese tree update not only massively changed what I supposedly had already learned, but also jumped me ahead past stuff I'd never before seen.

    Probably affected me more because I'm very early in the course, but I had to go back and "review" all the material that was new to me.

    RickRae,

    @onat

    Thanks for the screen grabs. Wow, that second half's new. I guess I'll see it eventually; they seem to roll changes out in waves/stages.

    I suppose I've gotten "used to" the tightly controlled singular path (as much as I can), but I still miss the old system in which one could more easily skip around, there was a separate tab for stories (which you could read any time you liked!), and so on.

    And, maybe just my imagination (or coincidental), but tree updates seemed less disruptive, too.

    RickRae,

    @onat

    The app informed me last night that my Spanish course has been "realigned" and my position adjusted accordingly. Haven't dug into that yet, but when I went for Legendary on the S3/U8 closing lesson, it threw all manner of stuff at me I'd never seen before.

    I bailed out of it and switched to Japanese until I have time to go back through the old lessons to see what they've done.

    (I'm on S3/U16 but ever since the switch to "path" I've been diligently Legendary-ing old lessons for review.)

    RickRae,

    @onat

    That's not far different from what happened the last time there was a major Spanish update; in that instance they moved me quite a bit forward along the path and marked everything behind me as completed.

    When I checked, I found there was a lot I'd not been exposed to. I went back to a point that looked reasonable and "retook" all the lessons.

    I don't mean to be totally down on the updates; the early Japanese lessons have greatly improved. More focus on sentence construction now.

    RickRae,

    @onat

    Ack! They just hit my Japanese course too!

    I always dread seeing the phrase "new and improved". :blobcatglare:

    RickRae,

    @onat

    Oh man, I really miss the question discussions. I often went to them for insights and understanding.

    First they killed voting in the app, which I didn't mind too much. Then they locked the discussions completely for everyone. Not so bad for Spanish since the old stuff was still there, but the Japanese course is new and some questions had no discussion at all.

    And then they deleted them altogether. :blobcatfacepalm:

    Chewie update: Day 526 I still like carrot & apple.

    Chewie is in verandah slot #2 nearest the tree. She has had a quiet day. Woke up at lunchtime when I was chatting to the butcher birds & kookaburras at lunchtime. Got a sliver of apple as a treat. Now off on possum business.

    RickRae,

    @pfred60

    Your (generic "your") possums are so much cuter than our opossums here!

    During Covid lockdown I set up motion-detecting "package cams" to alert me when something had been delivered (zero visibility of the front porch from inside the house). Every now and then one'll detect and record an opossum waddling by in the night.

    We waited patiently together over a picnic of kibble and steak with a side of steamed sweet potatoes. My dinner will be later.

    If you were previously disappointed with the search function on Mastodon, I highly recommend you try it again, as it has improved considerably.

    We used to only be able to search for hashtags, but now it feels much more like normal textual search.

    I tried it and found one, but there may just not be others in my feed. The match was against a raw word versus a hashtag though, so it does seem to be working in Fedilab.
