@ff7@josh "Voice channel" commonly mean a room in the left-hand list that, upon clicking on it, immediately joins you to a call that doesn't obstruct anything you did or see until that point.
Technically Element introduced the voice functionality on the dev branch a while ago, however the UI/UX works entirely different as they're designed around being (and called) video rooms.
For many people who're used to software like Teamspeak, Discord, Mumble or Ventrilo this is highly unintuitive.
