Anecdata on the prevalence of masking across recent travels:

Significantly more common in London than Malmo, Copenhagen, and Helsinki -- saw just 6 other people masked across many thousands of people, 2 of which were in chinstrap mode ๐Ÿ˜‚ And at least three times as prevalent in San Francisco than in London.

Many factors at play, no doubt. I find it fascinating! Makes me grateful for what we've got here in the SF Bay Area.

@redchrision ooh interesting! I've only seen Sweden's entry so far, looking forward to being surprised by everything else ๐Ÿ˜

josh,

@andrew yessss, we've been waiting for it rotate back through Sweden since 2016, so happy it's finally come to pass!

And as a bonus we got to go to our dear friends' wedding and meet some of my coworkers in person while we're at it ๐Ÿ˜ Cramming as much as we can into this trip ๐Ÿ˜‚

josh,

@redchrision ok that is awesome ๐Ÿคฉ my other half goes deep on geeking out about it too, keeps stats on expected vs actual results and all that. Can't wait to check out your project when we get back to our computers!

Delighted by this opinion piece trolling SFO for thinking it has the right to exclusive use of "San Francisco" ๐Ÿ˜‚ https://www.sfchronicle.com/opinion/openforum/article/sfo-oakland-airport-names-san-mateo-19435784.php

@flameeyes Right! There are a number of examples like that from metro areas around the globe.

Remarkably consistent pattern as to who still masks, at least in the anglo countries I've been in over the last two years:

Mostly people of color, older folks, and when it's young white people usually disability is involved.

Common thread, I suspect, is that these are the folks who stand to lose more if they get sick. I would that there were a greater showing of solidarity, but rugged individualism and all that ๐Ÿคท๐Ÿป

josh,
@josh@josh.tel avatar

@emjonaitis I really really appreciate you sharing that ๐Ÿค Indeed, that is also one of the two categories I fall under that significantly informs my decision to keep masking.

josh,
@josh@josh.tel avatar

@daniele_Hesse likewise, such a wonderful feeling to not get sick!

josh,
@josh@josh.tel avatar

Observations now from Denmark and Sweden, levels of masking consistent with what I know of their public health authorities' approach to the pandemic:

Out of the thousands of people I've seen here so far, only a single person wearing a mask other than us. And I suspect they were also a tourist.

josh,
@josh@josh.tel avatar

@yawnbox Very interesting! Between this and remembering what I read about the Netherlands legislating against mask requirements, I'm sensing that this may be a quality shared across a number of countries in Europe?

@josh@josh.tel avatar

Wait, so not only is San Francisco's water supplied by the colonial abomination that is the Hetch Hetchy reservoir, but also it regularly discharges untreated sewage into the SF Bay? https://www.sfchronicle.com/politics/article/feds-state-accuse-s-f-dumping-sewage-bay-ocean-19434422.php

Talk about externalizing costs... We've got some serious work to do.

Local antizionist Jewish people are being erased, and Palestinian diaspora begging to be seen as human are being ignored, by our electeds: https://www.counterpunch.org/2024/04/26/the-quality-of-mercy-in-petaluma-a-case-study/

Ambient carbon dioxide concentration correlates with SARS-CoV-2 aerostability and infection risk via https://www.nature.com/articles/s41467-024-47777-5

My takeaway: we really should be aiming to have CO2 levels at 500ppm when indoors with other people. Even 800ppm "results in a significant increase in viral aerostability."

josh,
@josh@josh.tel avatar

@tadbithuman Eep! Yeah I feel like we're in for widespread infrastructure upgrade over the course of decades to get indoor air quality to where it should be...
