is there a way to force fetching all encryption keys (i.e. what I think happens automatically when scrolling up in the history) without doing that manually in #element / some other #matrix client? Or is my understanding of how this works incorrect? :boost_ok:
@iro_miya@linus i have a server-managed key backup (i.e. on every session it restores stuff automagically after I login and confirm the session), but our usecase here is “dump the whole DM just so I can grep through it”, and, well..

@iro_miya@linus if I were to scroll upwards, it would probably find the keys and decrypt those messages. but i’m not in the mood for leaving a rock on my PgUp key for the next 30 minutes
@domi@linus if it says the sender hasn't sent you the keys then as far as I know you don't have the keys and can't decrypt the message, I don't think scrolling up more would help :x
@iro_miya@linus i am 99.9% sure that if I got to that message in the client it would let me actually see it (either through re-requesting keys, or fuck knows what). at least that’s what my past experience was
@domi@linus I think not, "re-requesting the keys" only refers to requesting the keys from your other devices, I don't think the server or other participants will ever resend you the keys in the Matrix protocol
But you could try to export the whole chat, that would make it load every message, hope it works!!!
@domi@linus afaik the keys are sent to every participant when they're generated and never again. That's why when someone fails to get a key you gotta run /discardsession which causes the client to send new keys to every participant
There's a shitty workaround where someone made a python script to filter out keys from your key backup so you can manually share them with others
