‘The Autorité régionale de transport métropolitain (ARTM) has not yet confirmed an exact launch date but said the project "is progressing according to plan" and that it will announce the launch "at the right moment."’ https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/montreal/montreal-metro-opus-card-recharging-telephone-1.7146276

I’m still eagerly awaiting this, but I continue to have a genuine problem with the ARTM’s condescending paternalistic attitude. As if we, the plebs, are unable to comprehend the tides and eddies which dictate when the right moment may come.

@heliomass I can't believe that there has been no way to auto-renew monthly passes for so long. Even if not through an app, it seems like something you should be able to set up online with a credit card. Vancouver has had this since its Compass system rolled out in the mid 2010s, and it was late to the game on contactless payment in general. Its previous monthly passes were paper scratch tickets! Montréal's system has been the same since I first visited in 2011. Glad to see some change, finally.

@uneabeille Totally. London has had the ability to top up your Oyster pass on-line for at least 15 years. Vancouver's system also seems good, from my limit experience visiting last month. Truth is, Opus wasn't really a good choice of technology and probably needs to be completely replaced in the long term.

@heliomass I can neither confirm nor deny whether I have been on the beta for this. But if I were part of the beta I would tell you it's been fully functional for several weeks now and it is glorious (albeit somewhat clunky)

@NeueWelle I'm looking forward to trying it, when our wise overlords at the ARTM deem "the right moment" has arrived for the masses to partake in mobile fare purchases.

@heliomass Once the need to move away from Calypso system was realized, my guess is that there was reluctance in spending more to patch it up. But political pressure have now forced them to develop that last minute card loading app while they evaluate the true cash-based replacement system and negotiate with REM/EXO/STM on needing exit fare gates at key stations outside of zone A.

@jfmezei 100% agree. OPUS isn't scalable at all.
