Considering taking part in this. Anyone else?

Thanks @scy for the pointer! Until Friday I procrastinated this and thought I wouldn’t manage to find the time anyway, but after spending Saturday evening in the photo darkroom with creative people, I was inspired and I hacked together a shitty little track for this week to have something at all. 🦾

And now I’m prepared. Next week is going to be even more fun.

scy,
@scy@chaos.social avatar

@Xjs Yay! Looking forward to this.

scy,
@scy@chaos.social avatar

Holy shit I'm fucking inspired. I… I think I might have a track y'all…!

I mean, it needs some more variation, some mixing and effects, but I still have a week to polish it :3

So I guess I'm doing this!

scy,
@scy@chaos.social avatar

I own several pieces of expensive music gear and never really did much with it. I want to make music, but I don't actually do it, because "I don't have the time" and "other things are more important".

Well, fuck that shit.

I'll be joining both as a learning journey and to have some outside pressure to produce something.

If you see yourself in this post, feel free to join me. Minimum track length per week is just one minute.

Actually producing a real, full "song" on the , instead of just a simple beat, and thus the first time using arranger mode. The UX is pretty clever and mostly intuitive.

But I'd love to be able to record automation into it, for filter cutoffs etc., without having to either store that automation in a song mode clip or creating an arranger-only "variation" of the clip.

Like, I want an effects automation overlay of sorts that doesn't modify my clips.

scy,
@scy@chaos.social avatar

Installed the Deluge community firmware, hoping that its new Automation View will alleviate this at least to a degree.

Also, reminder that if you'd like to join and have a full "streak" throughout the whole year (not that it's required or anything), today is the last day where you can join. You've got a little less than 12 hours to finish your track.

(This also means that I have a little less than 12 hours to finish my track. 😬)

https://weeklybeats.com/

scy,
@scy@chaos.social avatar

Okay yeah, Automation View helps a ton.

Also, lesson learned: Listen to your fucking track on decent speakers and on headphones before Sunday. Shit. I'll have to rescue some of it from being a total mess.

scy,
@scy@chaos.social avatar

Submitted. Let's do this.

scy,
@scy@chaos.social avatar

By the way, here's the track I've produced last week for :

https://weeklybeats.com/scy/music/overture

I'm very open to feedback, even if it's about things you don't like, as long as you're not being a dick about it.

@scy Nice stereo effects even on my small monitor speakers at my desk.
Now cut the last 3 seconds and run gapless into a full blast synth organ chord track in week 2.

scy,
@scy@chaos.social avatar

@pylon Huh. I don't have any solid idea for this week's track yet, so … let's see ;)

pylon,
@pylon@chaos.social avatar

@scy Probably I just listened too much DJ Shadow this morning 😉

scy,
@scy@chaos.social avatar

Okay, turns out the real challenge is to listen to everyone's submissions during the week.

379 tracks for week 1, wtf.

scy,
@scy@chaos.social avatar

Got a rough draft for week 2.

If I can pull this off.

Here's my second track, called "Glacier".

https://weeklybeats.com/scy/music/glacier

I set out to make a track about the cold weather outside and accidentally ended up making it about climate change. 🤷‍♂️ (In my head at least, and you can interpret the sounds accordingly, but it's not like it has any lyrics or something.)

Fun fact: The speakers on my smartphone are completely unable to play the sounds in the song 😂 It's as if they aren't there.

scy,
@scy@chaos.social avatar

New track!

"Chapter Four" sees me dipping my toes into territory – and petroleum refining.

https://weeklybeats.com/scy/music/chapter-four

This is yet another standalone track. It's being carried almost exclusively by samples, but after browsing samples for half a day I have to say that sample selection is work, too.

It also made me appreciate commercial sample collections more, because the quality at Freesound is mostly … mediocre.

scy,
@scy@chaos.social avatar

Okay, so number 5 is "Float", a short (1:08) track that's heavily inspired by the intro.

With 2½ minutes left before the deadline, I've uploaded track 08, "Headache".

https://weeklybeats.com/scy/music/headache

Definitely getting more confident with the . I love some of the possibilities it brings to the table, especially when it comes to complex sequencing, but on the other hand I find it so tedious to enter notes, even when using MIDI. Let's see whether I find a good way to combine it with the and get the best of both worlds.

@scy@chaos.social avatar

My track number 11 is "Flourish", a somewhat minimal, (literally) liquid d&b track with some outdoor sounds sprinkled in.

https://weeklybeats.com/scy/music/flourish

Liquid is one of my favorite genres, and it was fun to produce this one, walking around with the playing in my bag, walking in tempo. :)

With a bit more time, this would've been a better (and longer) track, but this is the time I had, and it's the track I got.

scy,
@scy@chaos.social avatar

Didn't have much time this week, so for number 13, I planned to do some kind of short intro/opening track.

I think somewhere along the road it became something different. The second half could probably turn into a complete song of its own …

https://weeklybeats.com/scy/music/news

only, in about four hours or something…?

scy,
@scy@chaos.social avatar

Doing for a quarter of a year now. What started as a way to force myself to actually do something with the music gear I have on a regular basis, to try to learn it and get into it has achieved just that: I'm learning by doing, getting faster and more experienced.

This week I made my first track longer than 5 minutes. Is it ? Not sure. At least it starts like it. 🤷‍♂️

https://weeklybeats.com/scy/music/move-on

It comes from a place of great melancholy, so don't be too hard on me please ;)

scy,
@scy@chaos.social avatar

Okay yeah, as expected, the mastering on is a mess. There was some clipping in the exported song, but I had run out of time to fix it.

I'm nevertheless quite satisfied with the track, even though it's darker than what I usually create or enjoy.

If you listen to it, I highly recommend real speakers or headphones, no tinny laptop or smartphone speakers, because the mix only sounds worse on them.

"Venting"

https://weeklybeats.com/scy/music/venting

scy,
@scy@chaos.social avatar

My song , called "ugh", is a result from several pieces of technology failing in the days before.

https://weeklybeats.com/scy/music/ugh

It's short and nothing special, but I kinda like it nevertheless. And it made my mood at least a tiny bit better.

NexCarter,
@NexCarter@chaos.social avatar

@scy if I was good at rapping I would love to do some rhymes over this. Cool flow :D

It's week 20 of #WeeklyBeats, and I've produced "Cosine", a chill lofi synth track that feels very ambient-y and a bit mysterious.

I'm not often really satisfied with my WeeklyBeats tracks, but this time I am. I'm enjoying it a lot, actually :) Curious what people think of it.

deraffe,

@scy I get that the slow intro is to build tension, but honestly, I just got impatient. Otherwise nice track. I would change just one little thing: Replace the shattering glass sample with something shorter, simpler, that doesn't end on a falling note... Maybe just a small "klink"?
Regarding genre... Dunno, but the soundscape reminded me of Das Muster (RIP):
https://dasmuster.bandcamp.com/track/bed-rfnisse-erwecken

scy,
@scy@chaos.social avatar

@deraffe You're right, there are some similarities. Almost the same length, too.

And yeah, I also got somewhat impatient when listening to the beginning, but then again, I knew what was coming anyway :)
